“I certify that the assignment submission is entirely my own work, and I fully understand the consequences of
plagiarism. I understand that making a false declaration is a form of malpractice.”
Submission Format:
“The submission is in the form of a MS Word document, where you provide the
responses to the tasks provided in illustrated technical report format provided and
your answer must follow the international standards in the word file to illustrate
this technical report. You must ensure you support the written report with a range
of graphical illustrations and appropriate appendices.”

Scenario:
You have recently been employed as a safety technician at Ford Motor Company in the Manufacturing
department. You will analyse job safety practices, risk assessment, incident reporting, and investigation, isolation
of hazard energy, and daily management for vehicle parts that come out of furnaces to ensure compliance with
specification requirements. The main steps of the manufacturing process are transporting these hot parts on roller
conveyors to a dipping cool water bath and then pulling on an inclined plan for drying. Your manager has asked
you to complete the following tasks as a part of your performance evaluation to join the Manufacturing team who
will help build the world-class, state-of-the-art smart vehicles the world expects from the company.
Task 1
Determine the reactions at supports (A) and (B) which carry the conveyer beam to sustain a
concentrated load of Fc and a uniformly distributed load of FD as shown in Fig. (1).

Task 1 Table
Task 2
A cylindrical water ( ρ = 1000 kg/m3 ) basin of diameter db as shown in Fig. (2) is used to cool
different hot parts which come out of the oven . Solve the following situations which occurred
during your shift work using Archimedes’ principle:
Technical and Vocational Institute
Centre No.: 91043
1) A M1 aluminium part ( ρ = 2700 kg/m3) is totally dipped in the cylindrical water basin.
Determine the buoyancy force on the aluminium part and the rise in water height (h).
2) A M2 part of another material is lifted from the basin in the air ( ρ = 1.3 kg/m3) after cooling
using a rope with an upward tension force of T. After a while, the part slipped from the rope
into the water once again. Determine the density of this part and check whether it will float or
sink in water.
(Note: Take the gravitational acceleration g = 9.8 m/s2)
Task 2 Table
Task 3
A vehicle part of mass M1 is firstly pulled with an inclined force (p) and constant acceleration a1
on a rough horizontal surface which has a coefficient of friction 0.3 as shown in Fig. (3). After
that, this part (M1) rests on a smooth inclined plane which is at 30 ° to the horizontal. If the
vehicle part (M1) is connected to a block of mass M2 by a light string in the way shown in Fig.
(4). Use d'Alembert's principle to a free body diagram to determine:

The force used to pull the part on the horizontal surface (P).
The acceleration of M1 and M2 and the tension force in the string on the inclined surface
(T).

Task 4
1) Two bars of steel and aluminium 1.25 m long each at 0 °C enter the furnace and are heated to 700 °C. The
steel and aluminium coefficients of linear expansion are 9 x 10 -6 and 24 × 10-6 (1/°C),
respectively. Determine the effect of heat transfer on the length of the bars.
2) Two blocks of copper and steel have a volume 4000 and 5000 mm 3, respectively at 0 °C enter the furnace and
are heated to 400 °C. The copper and steel coefficients of linear expansion are 17 × 10 -6 and 9 x 10-6 (1/°C),
respectively. Determine the effect of heat transfer on the volume of the blocks.
Task 5
A Diesel heat engine shown in Fig. (5) is used to operate the roller conveyer machine with a thermal efficiency
0.4. Heat is transferred to the engine at a rate of 60 kW. Determine the output power of the engine.
Technical and Vocational Institute
Centre No.: 91043
If the engine thermal efficiency is 0.55 with the same input heat determine the corresponding output power of the
engine then compare how changes in the thermal efficiency of this engine can affect its performance.
