Housewrap Step-by-Step 1 of 4

Cut the housewrap at the rough open-

ing as shown. At the sill, extend the cut 1 tape
4” horizontally on each side of the rough
opening.

Pro Tip! The shape of the cut in the house-


wrap is typically referred to as an “upsid-
edown martini glass.”

Pro Tip! Overlap all housewrap seams 6”.

housewrap intermittently, not continuously.

NOTES

Install the sill pan. Overlap the two sill


pan pieces, and seal the seam with flashing 2
tape.

Pro Tip! Layer the vertical sides of the sill


pan behind the housewrap, and layer the
front face of the sill pan over the house-
wrap.

Pro Tip! Ensure that the end dam on the


sill pan isn’t cracked or broken.

Fold the housewrap into the rough open-


ing, and fasten it to the interior stud face. 3
Seal the seams where the housewrap was
cut with construction tape.

At the head, make two 6” 45° cuts in the Angled

NOTES

Fold the housewrap up away from the


rough opening, and temporarily tape it out 4
of the way with construction tape.
Window
Apply a continuous bead of caulk to the Tape
head and jambs. Install the window in the
rough opening.

Pro Tip! Use 100% silicone caulk to ensure


long-term performance.

Pro Tip! Make sure caulk is applied only to


the head and jambs. Leave the sill un- Caulk
caulked, so that moisture can drain out and
away from the rough opening.

Shim the window to achieve an


even, continous space between the window 5
frame and the rough opening. Hold the
window in place by nailing one of the top
corners. Check the window for plumb, level,
and square. Confirm that the window opens
and closes smoothly without sticking.

Pro Tip! Check for square by measuring


the diagonals. The window is square when
the measurements are equal.

Fasten the window to the frame per the Nail at


manufacturer’s instructions. corner

Apply 4” flashing tape over the flange at

each side of the opening.

NOTES

Unfold the housewrap, and seal the 45º


cuts with construction tape. 8

After removing the shims, apply a bead housewrap
of low-expansion foam between the window
frame and the rough opening.

Pro Tip! Low-expansion foam prevents


air infiltration without bowing the window
frame.
