No nation is a definite winner in a
war, but if the Philippines does not
beseech its military might over the
contested seas, the country will just
keep losing. It is in the best interests
of the international communities to
make China understand the
importance of the law, the
ramifications of their activities to
marine resources, the freedom of
navigation, and the destructive
nature of their expansionist ideals.

Present the has adhered to the command of ‘might
problem or makes right’ and is continually, and
situation illegally, asserting dominance over the
West Philippine Sea.
Reason for position
Firstly, there is a need to establish authority over
the West Philippine Sea to protect it. Some may say
that the nation is incapable of defending against
Chinese troops, but such is false. To say that the
country is defenseless might be accurate, but the
nation itself is not powerless. The Hindustan Times has
reported that India has signed a pact with the
Philippines to procure Brahmos missile, the fastest
operational missile globally. Even without such
technology, several countries have shown support for
the Philippines, including Japan and the United States
(US). Last month, Germany stated its plans to send a
warship near the disputed waters as a sign to counter
Chinese territorial claims. Nonetheless, simply
manning the islands might be enough deterrent for
Chinese vessels to occupy them.

Reason for position
But still, China is untrustworthy. As a
response to the continued presence of
Chinese ships in KIG, the Department of
Foreign Affairs had sent multiple diplomatic
protests. The continued Chinese activity in
the region proves that China had practically
trashed such diplomatic protests even
though Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian
stated that China would settle conflicts with
the Philippines through diplomatic
channels. With this, the country may not
get as much economic benefits as China
may suggest.
Reason for position
Also, the livelihoods of Filipino fishers were
at risk. A last year’s study by Yale School of the
Environment determined that China is
responsible for half of the world’s fishing
activities. According to Homonhon
Environmental Rescue Organization (HERO), the
Philippines is being stolen of up to 240,000 kilos
of marine resources by Chinese vessels posted
at KIG. Overfishing will not only affect
fishermen, but it will also affect citizens as the
price for fish would skyrocket, especially as the
economy continues to decline due to the
pandemic. Taking action against those Chinese
vessels should be a top national priority.
Reason for position
Moreover, China is a country notorious for
disregarding navigational freedom. There have
been several instances of China refusing to drop
blockades to seas of global commons, even
blocking innocent passage, despite calls by the
United Nations (UN). The presence of Chinese
ships endangers Filipino fishermen. In fact, a
Chinese boat rammed, sunk, and abandoned a
Philippine fishing ship Gem-Ver in what came to
be known as the 2019 Recto Bank incident. China
has yet to pay monetary compensation to the 22
Filipinos whose lives were endangered and to
the ship owner even after nearly two years. If
nothing is done to safeguard fishers, these
atrocities will keep on piling up.

Overall, China has been continually sullying the
law, the aquatic resources, and the freedom of
the Philippines. The nation must take a stand
against these offenses by being vigilant and by
deepening diplomatic connections. The
Philippines have already gained international
sympathy because of the transgressions of China
against the national territory. The Philippines
must deepen its ties with other countries
through operations like joint military exercises.

The Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters has been tagged in numerous attacks
against both government and civilian targets, including participation in the
slaughter of 44 members of the police Special Action Force in Mamasapano,
Maguindanao in January 2015. In December last year, BIFF bandits had tried
taking control of Datu Piang town in Maguindanao. Last March, a bomb attack by
the group in Datu Saudi Ampatuan town left two persons dead and two others
wounded.
And yet when five truckloads of over 100 BIFF gunmen arrived last Friday in the
banana farming town of Datu Paglas also in Maguindanao, news reports said the
bandits were practically welcomed with open arms by the local government
ostensibly because it was Ramadan. A BIFF spokesman even said they were
merely in town to rest.
Resting for the group meant taking over the public market for about six hours as
government forces arrived to drive them out of town. The gunmen, according to
reports, were mostly young men up to age 25, with some believed to be only 15.
How can the state allow a group illegally bearing arms to “rest” at the expense of
a terrorized populace? Turning Datu Paglas into a place for BIFF rest and
recreation allows the bandits to replenish supplies and recharge their batteries,
boosting their strength and capabilities to further sow terror.

Open NCR to new ecozones
by Philippine Daily Inquirer May 10, 2021
The plea of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza) for
Malacañang to lift the ban on new ecozones in Metro Manila
deserves serious consideration by the Duterte administration, for
many reasons. Foremost of these are that it can alleviate the glut in
office space in the capital, and help address the record-high
unemployment caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing
economic downturn.
Office vacancy in Metro Manila is projected to rise to 12.5 percent
this year, the worst since 2003, as many Philippine offshore gaming
operators streamed out of the country in the wake of COVID-19,
and a number of information technology-business process
outsourcing (IT-BPO) companies streamlined their office space
requirements, according to real estate services firm Colliers
International Philippines. Property consulting firm KMC Savills Inc.,
on the other hand, predicted that Metro Manila’s office property
space would breach the 10-percent vacancy rate for the first time in
more than a decade and remain at the double-digit level in the next
two years amid the challenging environment brought about by the
public health and economic crises.
