INTRODUCTION

Cow peas is also known as ‘Black eyed. It is an unusual herbaceous legume from the genus vigna and
the species unguiculata. It is an important crop in the semi- arid regions across Africa as this is due to
its tolerance for sandy soil and low rainfall. Cowpeas mainly grow at a height of 3 to 8 feet and a
width 3 to 6 feet. It has a purple flowered colour. It is a vegetable plant type. This nutritious easy to
grow legumes, can be grown just about anywhere though human harvest and eat cowpeas seeds
which look like peas but all parts of the plant have been used to feed cattle. Cow peas is seed
propagated and its drought tolerant so therefore when the plant is established, you may only need to
water it during extended periods of hot, parched weather.

Cowpeas are indigenous to Africa. It originated in Africa and is widely grown in Africa, Latin
America, Southeast Asia and in the Southern United States

TOOLS USED

 Measuring tapes
 Jembe
 Panga
 Watering cans
 Dibbler.

PLANTING MATERIALS USED

Cowpeas seeds

Fertilizers

PROCEDURE

 Ecological Requirements
 Cowpeas is cultivated up to 1500m above sea level
 Rainfall: A minimum rainfall 200mm per growing season is required for most varieties.
It does well in rainfall up to 700mm
 Soil: It performs well in a wide variety of soils and the soil condition is well drained soils.

VARIETIES
There are two varieties which include:
 Red noodle asparagus bean
 California black eye cowpeas

MEASURING AND PLANTING

1. The farms were located and selected by the farm manager.

2. We measured the plots (3m by 3m)
3. We proceeded to land preparation by carrying out the following activities: Removal of weeds,
breaking down the soil clods and ensuring we acquire soil of fine particles and finally we
leveled the piece of land provided to us.
4. We then made terraces and holes at a spacing of 20cm by 30cm. The holes were made of a
depth of 2-3cm.
5. We the added fertilizer to the soil and mixed with soil before adding about 2-3 seeds to the
holes made then we covered the holes.
6. We then watered the piece of land provided on a regular to ensure healthy growth of the
seedlings.

INTERCULTURAL PRACTICES

We sprayed the crop with blitox to control bacterial blight.

DISCUSSION

Cowpeas are an annual leguminous crop which is grown for its seeds and leaves. Its residue can be
used as livestock fodder. It can withstand drought, short growing period and its multi-purpose use
makes it an attractive alternative for farmers in marginal drought prone areas with low rainfall. The
crop is also an important component in crop rotation because it has the ability to restore soil fertility.
Besides, easily maturing varieties provide food sooner than any other crop. It is a rich source of
dictary fiber and has been known to ease stomach conditions such as diarrhea and constipation. It is
also rich in vitamin B and riboflavin low in calories and cholesterol which is important for healthy
weight loss.

CONCLUSION
The yield potential varies from one variety to another and is also affected by the general crop
maintenance and ecological conditions.
