Lecture 4

This document discusses power converters used to supply electric drives. It describes DC-DC converters and their principle of chopper operation. Specifically, it discusses how choppers can step down or step up voltage through pulse width modulation or variable frequency control of the switch. The output voltage is a function of the duty cycle when the switch is on or off in the chopper circuit.

Introduction
Principle of Chopper Operation
Output voltage as a function of
duty cycle
Methods of Control
• Dc can be obtained by two.
– Ac link.
– Direct Dc to Dc.
• The switch can be controlled in various ways for varying the
duty ratio. The control techniques as follows.
• The two basic control techniques are:
– The time ratio control (TRC)
– Current limit control (CLC)
• TRC is subdivided.
– Constant frequency TRC.
– Variable frequency
• The output dc voltage can be varied by the following methods.
– pulse width modulation control or constant frequency
operation.
Methods for varying average output
voltage
Choppers are of Two Types
• Step-down Choppers
• Step-up Choppers
– In Step down(buck converter) choppers output
voltage is less than input voltage.
– In Step up(boost converter) choppers output
voltage is more than input voltage.
