Lab 2 - Excel - Charts
1 Introduction
In this lab, we will use Microsoft Excel Charts to present data in a more attractive way. Upon
finishing this lab, you should be able to:
2 Pre-requisites
Our Institute has prepared a Microsoft 365 subscription. You may refer to ITSC website to get your
own copy of Microsoft 365.

Please note that online version of the software is much less powerful than the offline one. Many
functionalities are not available online.
3 Charts
Charts allow you to present data in a worksheet in a visual format using a variety of graph types.
Before you make a chart you must first enter data into a worksheet. Then, you can insert the chart
by selecting the data to be used and then a chart type in Charts group of Insert tab.
Sometimes you entered the data with different settings by the default Chart setting. E.g., by default,
column charts expect every column as a series and use row label as horizontal axis. If you want to
change that, you may do so by clicking the “Switch Row/Column” button in Chart Tools Design tab
(offline Office) or Chart Tools Chart tab (online Office 365).
After creating the chart in Excel, you may choose to paste it into a document. You can perform
simple copy and paste. In this case, if you use the offline version of Excel and Word, a “link” is
created between the source Excel and the destination document. Within the document, you may
call-up the Excel file and edit its content if you want to change the graph. See the options available
in Chart Tools tabs. To avoid such link, you may choose to paste the graph as a picture (as in this set
of notes). If you use online version of Excel, only picture of graph is copied.
You may add/change the labels in Chart Tools Layout tab, Labels group. For examples, you can add
title, or axis labels, etc. there.
When you select a chart, you will see that there are some color-boxes in the worksheet, indicating
the cells used for creating the chart. You may simply change the boxes to change the data to be
included in the chart.
By clicking the Select data icon in Chart Tools Design tab (or Chart Tools Chart tab for online Excel),
you can select the cells for creating different series labels. Select the part you want to change and
select the corresponding part on the Excel worksheet.
In offline Excel, you can format the Charts by double clicking the objects you want to format. The
corresponding Format Chart pane will appear on the right and you can do the corresponding
formatting. In online Excel, you can call the Format Pane for charts in Chart Tools Chart tab
button).
Afterwards, you can choose and select the options you like to change. For example, you can enable
the data labels and showing the % at the location shown in the following diagram.
5 Tasks
Task 3. In the Excel Workbook, insert a pie chart that looks like the following one. Please note the
Chart type, Data labels, and Chart title.
6 Submissions
Please submit your Excel workbook to Moodle. The filename of your Excel workbook should include
your student ID. For example, if your student ID is s12345678, then the filename of your Excel
workbook should be Lab 2_s12345678.
