Task 6

The document discusses the relocation of goods from the Mugla Warehouse to a new warehouse near Jumna port. It identifies 10 items totaling over 1,000 metric tons that need to be transferred, including rice, beans, vegetable oil, wheat blend, sugar, salt, tents, sheeting, kitchen sets, and blankets. Possible constraints on moving the goods include climate, legislation regarding quality standards, available transportation modes, and security/safety checkpoints. The report also describes the packaging and storage of the goods, and recommends maintaining conditions during loading, transport, and unloading based on item characteristics. Legislative controls relate mainly to hazardous goods requiring special packaging and labelling.

RE: UNIT 4 - TASK 6 - HANDLING OF GOODS

As you know, contingency plans are being drawn up, by Bruno, related to relocation
of the Mugla Warehouse Operation to a new Warehouse close to Jumna port. One
of the factors to be considered is the transfer of stock currently held at Mugla
Warehouse.

Please prepare a short report for Bruno, which identifies the goods that have to
be moved and explains possible constraints on their movement.

Relocation of the Mugla warehouse operation to the new warehouse close to Juman
port requires to transfer the current stock in Mugla warehouse . Therefore , the
following goods are identified to be moved :

Rice 5% broken 12798 639,900 639.9

Blankets 50% 1230 2,054 2.1

The possible constraints on movement the above goods can be referred to as

follows:
Climatic Constraints
These constraints are related to the climatic changes that may happen and cause
damages to the roads network that will have an impact on choosing the
transportation modes .

Legislative Constraints
 Page 2
They are related to the nature of the goods and the extent to which they are
compliant with the quality standards that are legally approved by the governmental
agencies in concern .

Transportation Modes Constraints

These constraints are basically created due to the nature of some goods and their
properties that make them need specific type of transportation mode and specific
conditions for transporting them from location to another .

Security and Safety Constraints

Existing several check points sometimes may lead to stopping the truck and getting the
loaded items checked that may result in partial loss or damage of the goods. Moreover ,
some loads may require specific security and safety tools that their unavailability may
lead to disability of moving them from location to another .

You also need to do some work on the characteristics of the goods to be handled. As part of
a review of handling methods, for the different goods identified, you are now required to:

1. Describe the characteristics of these goods

The characteristics of the goods can be described and shown in the following table :

 Page 3

Item Description Packaging type Packaging Unit Accounting Unit
piece

2.

Rice 5% broken Bags 50 kgs kg

Beans red kidney Bags 50 kgs kg

Vegetable oil Tin 20 ltrs litre

Wheat soya blend Bags 25 kgs kg

Sugar white Bags 1 kg kg

Iodised salt Bags 1 kg kg

Plastic sheeting Roll 60 mtrs piece 55

Kitchen set Box piece piece 5

Blankets 50% Bundle 30 piece 1.67

Jerrycan collapsible Box 20 piece 0.95

Identify the current handling methods and give recommendations for how we can
maintain the condition of the goods during loading, transporting and unloading.

The current handling methods of the goods can be shown by the following schedule :

All these goods are stored by stacking in blocks inside the warehouse as per the following

following recommendations for how we can maintain the condition of the goods during
loading, transporting and unloading should be considered :

 The type of goods, required packages, volumes, sizes, dimension must be identified
prior to choosing the transport mode and the goods movement in order to determine
the goods weight, MT’s, cube parameter and to select the most suitable transport
mode as well .

 Goods should be protected from weather condition, such as rain, humidity, bad road
infrastructures etc.

 The level of goods fragility should be known and determined for the purpose of using
the suitable packing inside the transport mode .

 Page 6
 It should be known and considered that some goods have special handling method
where different ways of packaging and organizing the goods take place in accordance
with such goods characteristics and specific handling requirements .

 Each method of transport require a specific ways of handling goods in order to carry
out an adequate movement. This can be enhanced either by a specific handling
equipment’s such as big cranes, forklift, trucks mini forklift for the small volumes, or to
depend on daily labours that goods can be loaded and offloaded from and to the
method of transport

3. Are there any constraints or legislative controls for the goods being
transported?

Generally speaking , the legislative constraints and controls for the goods
transported from location to another are related to the hazardous and dangerous
goods where specific packaging and labelling is required and forced by the
government authorities in concern . Moreover , even there will be constraints on
selecting type of the transport mode and the trucks as well that should be suitable
to moving the goods and should be approved and licenced by the concerned
government authorities .

Regarding to our goods that needs transferring from Mugla warehouse to another
new warehouse close to Jumna port and as it is apparent in the schedule of the
goods stock in Mugla currently , I think that there is no and legislative constraints
or controls since all the items are basic relief goods and food items.

4. Suggest any improvements that could be made to the way goods are
currently handled. Including any modifications which might be required to
vehicles, and any additional handling equipment that would be required.

The same previously given recommendations for how we can maintain the
condition of the goods during loading, transporting and unloading can be used as
the required suggested improvements . These improvements can be shown again
as follows:

 The type of goods, required packages, volumes, sizes, dimension must be identified
prior to choosing the transport mode and the goods movement in order to determine
the goods weight, MT’s, cube parameter and to select the most suitable transport
mode as well .

infrastructures etc.

 The level of goods fragility should be known and determined for the purpose of using
the suitable packing inside the transport mode .

with such goods characteristics and specific handling requirements .

 Each method of transport require a specific ways of handling goods in order to carry
