The module learning outcomes relevant to this assessment (either assessed in
part or full) are listed below:

LO2 Examine the nature of the built environment sector and the contribution
professional bodies and professional ethics and values make towards
sustainable construction.

LO3 Appraise a project measuring its aims and objectives against an

organisation's strategic objectives and available finance mechanisms.

LO4 Design and deliver appropriate strategies to control and monitor key
elements within the project life cycle and a client setting that is complex
and unpredictable.

LO5 Autonomously display a deep and systematic understanding of how high

performing management teams within a dynamic project environment
are developed.

3
2. Assessment brief
Select a construction project in any context. Imagine that you have been asked to brief
a company manager on the status of the project. Analyse the project and discuss the
important issues about its status. Finally, present your findings and provide
recommendations about the project. You will also need to show your professionalism
on the project by displaying that you possess the necessary skills and knowledge to
perform with the highest standards in this role. This should be evidenced through the
CIOB student membership.

A checklist of items to be covered in your report include:

• Evidence of your CIOB membership

• Name, Background, and Context of the Project
• Business Case
• WBS, schedule and key milestones
• Project Team Management, Members, and Reporting Structure
• Cost Estimate
• Initial Project Constraints and Assumptions
• Risk analysis and Mitigation Summary, including Risk Register
• Recommendations.

You may modify the outline to suit your projects. Different projects have different
objectives, so the key is clear communication.

Selecting a Project
You are encouraged to pick any project to analyse. However, it is strongly
recommended that you pick an organization or company you are familiar with and
analyse a project in that organization. By picking a familiar project, you can ask for,
and usually obtain, realistic data. Hint: Pick small, rather than large projects.

4
You may pick a project that has not started (new), one that is ongoing (active), or one
that has been completed (historical). Concentrate on your own analyses of your
projects.

Note: You may not be familiar with all of the technical aspects of the project, but this
project requires that you know something about the typical life cycles of projects and
the processes that occur within them, which you have learned in class. Therefore, do
not concentrate on the technology or process solutions- focus instead on the
management of this project using best practices that you have learned.

3. Format of the submission

• Use Ms Word to prepare your report.

• The report should be typed in 1.5 line spacing, 12pt Arial. The word count in
the report should not exceed 3750 words.

• Focus on clear communication and emphasize the presentation of an analysis of

the project and its status, which are important skills for a project manager.

• Detailed documents, such as WBS, Risk Register etc., may be included as

appendices. You are encouraged to provide references.

• While you can use help gained from researching templates found online, your
documents must reflect the content and scale of this project case only! Most
templates found online contain too many steps that are not appropriate for certain
project cases.

• Please focus on this problem only and do your best to produce proper
documentation on your own that you would actually submit on the job.

• You will be graded as though this were a professional assignment, so be sure

you think through what would be needed as though you were producing this for
your boss.

5
4. Submitting your work
Submissions must be made by 15:00 on the day they are due. Try to avoid
leaving submission up to the deadline to avoid the risk of any technical issues
resulting in a missed deadline. You will submit your report via Turnitin, using the
submission link in the Weblearn folder called “003: Individual Report (3750
words)” on the module page. A Single file should be uploaded.

6. Academic integrity
• It is important that your assessment shows academic integrity. You must
ensure that you reference sources you have used and check the originality of
your work before submission.

• If you do not adhere to these academic standards it may lead to allegations of

plagiarism and academic misconduct, which will be investigated by the Student
Casework Office.

• Further advice is given in the Module Handbook and in the University’s

academic regulations.

• Referencing your sources is essential for academic work and is a means of

avoiding accusations of plagiarism. The School of the Built Environment use
Harvard referencing. More information this can be found in the London Met
Library in the referencing and copyright section .

7. Mitigating circumstances
• The Mitigating Circumstances process is designed to assist students who have
been affected by mitigating circumstances during their studies.

• The University defines ‘mitigating circumstances’ as:

circumstances that are acute, severe, unforeseen and outside a

student’s control, that occur immediately before or during the
assessment period in question.

• If a student attends an assessment, submits a piece of coursework etc., they

are declaring that they are fit to take the assessment and any mitigating
circumstances claim submitted in respect of that assessment will be invalid.

• If your circumstances are such that you cannot submit on the deadline day you
should submit a mitigating circumstances claim for non -submission supported by
appropriate independent evidence.

7
• Mitigating circumstances claims must be submitted within two weeks of the
submission deadline for the assessment or the date of the examination
concerned. However, you are advised to submit claims as soon as possible.

• Further information, including how to submit a claim, can be found using the link
below.
