“OUR CONTRACT WITH THE NATION REFLECTS OUR OBLIGATIONS AS
IDEAL RIZALIAN STUDENTS TO BATTLE THE CHALLENGING
TIMES OF PANDEMIC”

A lot of changes happened in just a snap of a finger. Who would ever know
that starting last year would be the beginning of the suffering of numerous people because
of the unexpected pandemic? Sure, no one was prepared nor anticipates that this
saddening event would occur. Since then, not only each one of us is affected but also the
whole world. Without a doubt, our nation, the Philippines, is currently dealing with a slew
of macroeconomic issues. We are currently experiencing a financial crisis and economic
deprivation that is preventing us from overcoming these problems caused by the
pandemic. Filipino’s routine changed, as well as their whole lifestyle. A lot of companies
went bankrupt, their employees went few or worse, none. This pandemic changes our
lives in a way that many suffered but cannot do anything but cope up. Within these
changes, the resiliency of the Filipinos was undeniable.
Generally speaking, the COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on
significant facets of national and global culture, including educational institutions. The
same negatively affect the students’ academic achievements and performance whether
they from primary, secondary, tertiary and graduate school. Some of us are having
financial difficulties, and some of us have been forced to halt our studies because we are
unable to afford all of the items needed to use in our online learning system. We
continuously experiencing a tremendous challenge because of this pandemic. Most of the
students are not familiar nor not used to this situation and many students could not afford
to study anymore because their parents are unemployed.
There are many hardships in life and they prefer to stop schooling because
they do not have the resources to study, primarily, the internet connection is necessary
to be in an online class. It's been remarkable progress, influencing everybody from the
most youthful youngsters entering school straight up to youthful grown-ups in colleges.
As a student, we are all obligated to finish all our activities in school since we are the one
who obliged ourselves to continue our study during this crisis. But also the role of being
a student will not just end for being a student but also we have our role in our community.
Since we are all quarantined in our home, all the things that we are doing are limited.
Students have been gaining disparate impact of the epidemic to themselves-- mentally,
physically, or emotionally, all of these are a threat to the students’ health. Of course, not
only the students but these apply to other people as well.
Our nation represents the people itself, we must broaden our responsibilities
in order to achieve the best community and society possible, not just for Rizalians, but for
the entire population of this nation. When tough times pass, many of us learn how to
overcome these types of situations so that we can endure the whole difficult and
demanding scenario. Children and adolescents became immersed in a new reality that
has had a huge impact on their lives. Even if sudden changes appeared, our dreams must
continue, despite the pandemic.

As Rizalian students ourselves, our obligation is to set standards on battling

these challenging times of pandemic for us to be an ideal individual to others who are
also going through hardships. One way to achieve this is by having concrete motivation.
Being motivated helps us to improve the efficiency of our actions. It builds a friendly
relationship with others and leads us to the stability of achievements. One of the most
important ways to do that is to set a positive example for others. It's as simple as being
positive. Create a motivating message for others to follow. It is infectious to be positive.
When you generate optimistic messages, they can spread like wildfire.

Maintaining our physical, mental, and emotional health is also needed. Healthy
living should be a part of our daily routine. Chronic diseases and long-term disorders can
be avoided by leading a safe lifestyle. Self-esteem and self-image are aided by feeling
good about ourselves and taking care of our well-being. Another essential thing to
possess is having proper time management. This time of pandemic has been bringing out
the worst of us, most of us experience cramming no matter how much we avoid it when
it comes to passing school or work requirements. Time management makes it easier to
manage your projects and guarantees that you have sufficient time to finish each job.
When you're not trying to finish anything before a deadline, the quality of the product is
great.

For the improvement of mental health which is the most important, is to have
focus and concentration, it aids in learning, allows for better understanding, stimulates
the mind, a huge help in concentrating on a task, work, or target, and allows you to ignore
irrelevant and insignificant thoughts. Make sure to spend time for yourself in order to cope
up with everything and ease the stress you are currently feeling. There are bunch of
influencers on various social media sites who can entertain you or online videos and
games to watch and play when you are feeling sad.
Connect with your family, friends, or loved ones. Talk to someone to avoid
suicidal thoughts. One more option is we can express our thoughts and feelings on social
media as well, if we only want to. Keeping in touch with your family also makes you
healthy. Surround yourself with positivity and cut toxic people around you. A positive
relationship is key for a healthy family. Teamwork, and enjoyment of one another's
business, quality time, coordination, and mutual appreciation are the foundations of
positive family relationships. We must practice these, despite the ongoing pandemic virus,
which we have no idea when will stop.
Needless to say, follow COVID-19 protocols and stay at home as possible.
Remind your families and friends on a daily basis. Constantly observe social distancing
or physical distancing, always wear facemask and facesheild. Wash your hands and
maintain spraying of alcohol every time. Eat healthy foods and exercise at least few times
a week to have a strong immune sytem. Be attentive to your surroundings and be mindful
of the people you've come into contact with. As Rizalians, it is our responsibility to follow
the rules. Not to leave the house in order to prevent the virus from spreading around the
world, but to research at home and consider how to convince people to simply obey
government policies because what they are doing is also for the people. So that we do
not get infected and the number of corona viruses in the world does not increase.

Being an individual and as a student of JRU, we can help our community by

being a role model to others. Also since we are considered as the youth and the hope of
our nation and we are more expressive than the other generations, we can be a help to
our society by spreading some awareness about the situation that we are dealing with
right now. Some of the youth are the ones who promote “Bayanihan” in our nation.

Many students are underage, and they are prohibited from leaving the building
because we are all can be the carrier of the virus. Fortunately, there are numerous of
factors that you will never be able to influence locally from your home's protection. A
powerful idea that has come out during this time of sweeping pandemic when many
Filipinos don’t have the means to feed themselves and their families, people drop off
whatever food they could donate at a central location in the community and those who
can’t afford to buy their own only have to line up to get what they need for free. It is great
to know that Jose Rizal University also offers Community Pantries that came from the
generosity of donors and sponsors.

Ultimately and the vital factor is to have a strong faith in our almighty God and
not forget to pray. Having faith in God is the same as trusting Him. You must have
complete faith that God is on your side and that he will help and protect you wherever
and whenever you are despite every good and bad. Surrender everything to Him, He
knows what is best for you, so you must completely trust him in order to fully accept what
he has planned for you. Our faith is not irrational, since our God is both trustworthy and
strongest of all.
As Rizalian students, we should always practice the thought of our core values.
Be responsible enough to follow the guidelines. Be courteous, we must always have
respect especially to the authority who implement safety protocols. All of us are going
through a hard time because of the pandemic, be mindful enough with the words we utter.
Be considerate, not everyone can handle the problems we are going through in this
pandemic. And we should always be ready to help especially those people who are in
need. Finally, have integrity, if you’re being exposed to a COVID-positive patient we
should disclose important information to the doctors and nurses so that the virus will not
spread.
Regardless of what we are going through or have been through in the past. As
Rizalians, we are still capable of carrying out our responsibilities as Filipino citizens.
People who are educated but lack humanity can be seen in times like these. However,
you can also come across people who are uneducated but have a great deal of respect
and affection for their fellow citizens. Even though we are fighting for the rights of people
and countries, none of us want to be like this. We are all dissatisfied with the situation
and the government's response to the pandemic. We have no choice but to be grateful
for our good fortune and to encourage one another. So that we can assist those who are
in need.

Considering everything that has been stated, it is all-important to be informed

about current world events and to be aware of the conditions that we are facing during
this pandemic. Through this, we will raise each other up and put an end to the chaos that
has plagued our whole way of life. We surely still have a long way to go in this "new
normal" situation, but we should be prepared for the worst-case scenario. Every action
we take in our community reflects not only our country, but also who we are as Rizalians.
Our obligation as a student will never end for being just a Filipino but up to the extent of
being a Rizalian. This pandemic taught us that there is goodness and humanity, even in
the darkness.
