INFORMATION SHEET 1.1-2

Plan and prepare unit assembly

Learning Objectives:

After reading this information sheet you must be able to:

• Define computer hardware

• Classification of the hardware components of a computer with its corresponding
functions
• Distinguish input and output devices

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever looked inside a computer case, or seen pictures of the inside of one? The small
parts may look complicated, but the inside of a computer case isn't really all that mysterious.
This lesson will help you master some of the basic terminology and understand a bit more
about what goes on inside a computer.

Computer Hardware – is a physical parts of a computer, such as the case, CPU, monitor,
computer mouse, keyboard, data storage, graphics card, sound card speakers and motherboard.

Identify function of internal computer hardware components

Internal computer components are designed to fit INSIDE the computer system and they all
carry out important roles.

CPU (Central Processing Unit) - A computer's CPU handles all instructions it receives
from hardware and software running on the computer.

Components of the CPU

In the CPU, there are two primary components.

1. ALU (arithmetic logic unit) – performs mathematical, logical, and decision operations.
2. CU (control unit) – directs all the processors operations.

There are two main brands of CPU currently on the market.. Intel and AMD:

The difference between Intel & AMD CPU?

 Intel CPU do perform better at certain tasks but they cost more to buy than AMD
CPU.
 Connecting pins

RAM (Random Access Memory) - is a hardware device that allows information to be stored
and retrieved on a computer. RAM is usually associated with DRAM, which is a type of memory
module. Because data is accessed randomly instead of sequentially like it is on a CD or hard
drive, access times are much faster. However, unlike ROM, RAM is a volatile memory and
requires power to keep the data accessible. If the computer is turned off, all data contained in
RAM is lost.

Types of RAM

• Static RAM (SRAM)

• Dynamic RAM (DRAM)
• Synchronous Dynamic RAM (SDRAM)
• Single Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic RAM (SDR SDRAM)
• Double Date Rate Synchronous Dynamic RAM (DDR, DDR2, DDR3, DDR4)

Note: The more RAM you have installed in your computer. the faster it can perform. You can open and use
more programs at the same time without slowing the computer down.

Storage (Hard disk) – there are two general types of hard drives: Hard disk drives (HDD),
which use one or more rotating disc and rely on magnetic storage, and Solid-state drives (SSD),
which have no moving mechanical parts, but use flash memory like the kind found in USB flash
drives

There are two categories of storage devices:

 Internal storage – internal hard disk drive, solid state drive
 External storage – external hard disk drive, USB flash drive etc.

Motherboard - is a printed circuit board and foundation of a computer that is the biggest board
in a computer chassis. It allocates power and allows communication to and between
the CPU, RAM, and all other computer hardware components.

Motherboard parts and its function

1. CMOS Battery – Supply power to restore BIOS setting and keep the real time clock
running

2. Input & output ports – use to connect the outside hardware or peripherals of the
computer.

INFORMATION SHEET 1.1-5

Configuration of BIOS in accordance with hardware requirements

Learning Objectives:

After reading this information sheet you must be able to:

• Define BIOS and UEFI

• Explain of the different function of a BIOS and UEFI
• Configure and setup BIOS settings

Different between BIOS and UEFI

• BIOS = basic input/output system.

• UEFI = Unified extensible firmware interface.
• UEFI is graphical & can access 2TB + drives.
• UEFI in effect replaces BIOS.
• But many list UEFI as a type of BIOS.

BIOS – Basic Input Output System, is a ROM chip found on motherboards that allows you to
access and set up your computer system at the most basic level.

 BIOS includes instruction on how to load basic computer hardware. It also includes a
test referred to as a POST (Power-On-Self-Test) that helps verify the computer
meets requirements to boot up properly. If the computer does not pass the POST,
you will receive a combination of beeps indicating what is malfunctioning in the
computer

Four main functions of a PC BIOS:

 POST - Test the computer hardware and make sure no errors exist before loading
the operating system. Additional information on the POST is available on our POST
and beep codes.

 BOOTSTRAP LOADER - Locate the operating system. If a capable operating

system is located, the BIOS will pass control to it.

 BIOS DRIVERS – Low-level drivers that give the computer basic operational control
over your computer’s hardware.

 BIOS SETUP or CMOS SETUP - Configuration program that allows you to configure
hardware settings including system settings such as computer passwords, time, and
date

UEFI – Unified Extensible Firmware Interface, is an upgrade for the traditional computer BIOS
that Intel started developing as EFI. UEFI is an update

How to Access the BIOS Settings to Boot on CD Drive

Restart your computer. Open Start > Click the power icon and click Restart.

• If your computer is locked, click the lock screen, then click the power icon in the bottom-
right corner of the screen and click Restart.

• If your computer is already off, press your computers "On" switch.

Wait for the computer's first startup screen to appear. Once the startup screen appears, you'll
have a very limited window in which you can press the setup key.

• It's best to start pressing the setup key as soon as the computer begins to restart.

• If you see "Press [key] to enter setup" or something similar flash across the bottom of the
screen and then disappear, you'll need to restart and try again.

Press and hold Del or F2 to enter setup. The key you're prompted to press might also be
different; if so, use that key instead.

• You'll typically use the "F" keys to access the BIOS. These are at the top of your
keyboard, though you may have to locate and hold the Fn key while pressing the
proper "F" key.
• You can look at your computer model's manual or online support page to confirm your
computer's BIOS key.

Change your settings carefully. When adjusting settings in your BIOS, be sure that you certain
what the settings will affect. Changing settings incorrectly can lead to system or hardware failure.
 If you don't know what you want to change coming into the BIOS, you probably shouldn't
change anything.

Change the boot order. If you want to change what device to boot from, enter the Boot menu.
From here, you can designate which device the computer will attempt to boot from first. This is
useful for booting from a disc or flash drive to install or repair an operating system.

• You'll typically use the arrow keys to go over to the Boot tab to start this process.

INFORMATION SHEET 1.2-3

Installing portable applications

Learning Objectives:

After reading this information sheet you must be able to:

• Explain of the different types tools for creating a bootable installer

INTRODUCTION

If you need to install Windows or Linux and you don’t have access to a CD/DVD drive, a bootable
USB drive is the solution. You can boot to the USB drive, using it to run the OS setup program,
just like a CD or DVD.

We have collected some links to free programs that allow you to easily setup a USB drive to install
Windows or Linux on a computer.

Tools for creating a bootable windows and linux USB drive

Windows USB/DVD Download Tool

 The Windows USB/DVD Download Tool is an official, freeware tool from Microsoft that
allows you to install Windows 7 and Windows 8 and Windows 10 without having to first
run an existing operating system on your computer. You can change the boot order of
the drives in your computer’s BIOS so the Windows installation on your USB drive runs
automatically when you turn on your computer. Please see the documentation for your
computer for information about how to access BIOS and change the boot order of drives.

Rufus

 Rufus is a small, portable program that allows you to create bootable USB drives for
Windows and Linux. It also allows you to check the USB device for bad blocks, using up
to four passes. Rufus runs in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Windows
Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. You can create bootable USB drives for the listed
versions of Windows, as well as almost all popular Linux distributions, such as Ubuntu,
Kubuntu, Fedora, and OpenSUSE. It’s our current preferred way to create Linux Live
CDs and USB drives.

Rufus is very easy to use and the program looks like the default format window shown in
Windows when you format a hard disk partition, USB drive, or other external drive.

Ubuntu Startup Disk Creator
 The Ubuntu Startup Disk Creator allows you to convert a USB flash drive or SD card into a drive
from which you can run your Ubuntu system. You don’t have to dedicate the whole drive to the
Ubuntu system. You can store other files in the remaining space.

The program also allows you to create a drive for Debian, or any other Debian-based OS for which
you have a CD or .iso image.

Universal USB Installer

 Universal USB Installer is a program that allows you to choose from several Linux distributions to
install on a USB flash drive. Select the Linux distribution, provide a location for the appropriate ISO
file, select your USB flash drive, and click Create.

Note: The USB flash drive must be formatted as a Fat16, Fat32, or NTFS drive.

WiNToBootic

 WiNToBootic is another free tool that allows you to create a bootable USB flash drive for installing
Windows 7 or Windows 8. It supports an ISO file, a DVD, or a folder as the boot disk source. It’s a
standalone tool that doesn’t require installation and it operates very fast.

Note: this tool doesn’t appear to be developed anymore.

System Requirements

What are the System Requirements?

Are the configuration that a system must have in order for a hardware or software
application to run smoothly and efficientlu. Failure to meet these requirements can result in
installation problems or performance problems. The former may prevent a device or application
from getting installed, whereas the latter may cause a product to malfunction or perform below
expectation or even to hang or crash.

System requirements are also known as minimums systems requirements.

Windows System Requirements

INFORMATION SHEET 1.4-1

Install application software based on installation guide and software license agreement

Learning Objectives:

After reading this information sheet you must be able to:

• Define what is application software

• Know how to install application software

INTRODUCTION

You may have heard people talking about using an application or an app. But what exactly does
that mean? An application (or app) is type of software that allows you to perform specific tasks.
Applications for desktop or laptop computers are sometimes called desktop applications, and
those for mobile devices are called mobile apps. When you open an application, it runs inside
the operating system until you close it. Much of the time, you will have more than one
application open at the same time, and this is known as multitasking.

Application software (app for short) is a program or group of programs designed for end users.
Examples of an application include a word processor, a spreadsheet, an accounting application,
a web browser, an email client, a media player, a file viewer, simulators, a console game or a
photo editor.

System requirements
System requirements are the required specifications a device must have in order to use
certain hardware or software. For example, a computer may require a specific I/O port to work
with a peripheral device. A smartphone may need a specific operating system to run a
particular app.

Before purchasing a software program or hardware device, you can check the system
requirements to make sure the product is compatible with your system.

Typical system requirements for a software program include:

• Operating system
• Minimum CPU or processor speed
• Minimum GPU or video memory
• Minimum system memory (RAM)
• Minimum free storage space
• Audio hardware (sound card, speakers, etc)

How to install application software “Oracle Virtual Box”

In order to run Virtual Box on your machine, you need:

• Reasonably powerful x86 hardware. Any recent Intel or AMD processor should do.

• Memory. Depending on what guest operating systems you want to run, you will need at
least 512 MB of RAM (but probably more, and the more the better). Basically, you will need
whatever your host operating system needs to run comfortably, plus the amount that the
guest operating system needs. So, if you want to run Windows 8.1 on Windows 7, you
probably won't enjoy the experience much with less than 2 GB of RAM. Check the
minimum RAM requirements of the guest operating system, they often will refuse to install
if it is given less. Sometimes it malfunctions instead. So you'll need that for the guest alone,
plus the memory your operating system normally needs.

• Hard disk space. While VirtualBox itself is very lean (a typical installation will only need
about 30 MB of hard disk space), the virtual machines will require fairly huge files on disk
to represent their own hard disk storage. So, to install Windows 8, for example, you will
need a file that will easily grow to several 10 GB in size.

• A supported host operating system. Presently, we support Windows, many Linux

distributions, Mac OS X, Solaris and OpenSolaris.

• A supported guest operating system.

INFORMATION SHEET 1.4-3

Access and install software updates

Learning Objectives:

After reading this information sheet you must be able to:

• Explain why software updates are so important

• Know how to update software

INTRODUCTION

Software updates are important because they often include critical patches to security holes. ...
They can also improve the stability of your software, and remove outdated features. All of these
updates are aimed at making the user experience better.

5 reasons why general software updates and patches are important

1. Software updates do a lot of things

Software updates offer plenty of benefits. It’s all about revisions. These might include
repairing security holes that have been discovered and fixing or removing computer
bugs. Updates can add new features to your devices and remove outdated ones.

While you’re at it, it’s a good idea to make sure your operating system is running the
latest version.

2. Updates help patch security flaws

Hackers love security flaws, also known as software vulnerabilities. A software

vulnerability is a security hole or weakness found in a software program or operating
system. Hackers can take advantage of the weakness by writing code to target the
vulnerability. The code is packaged into malware — short for malicious software.

An exploit sometimes can infect your computer with no action on your part other than
viewing a rogue website, opening a compromised message, or playing infected media.

What happens next? The malware can steal data saved on your device or allow the
attacker to gain control over your computer and encrypt your files.
Software updates often include software patches. They cover the security holes to keep
hackers out.

3. Software updates help protect your data

You probably keep a lot of documents and personal information on your devices. Your
personally identifiable information — from emails to bank account information — is
valuable to cybercriminals.
They can use it to commit crimes in your name or sell it on the dark web to enable others
to commit crimes. If it’s a ransomware attack, they might encrypt your data. You might
have to pay a ransom for an encryption key to get it back. Or, worse, you might pay a
ransom and not get it back. Updating your software and operating systems helps keep
hackers out.

4. It’s not all about you

OK, cyber security is mostly about you, but you’ve got other people to think about, too. If
your device gets a virus, you could pass it on to your friends, family, and business
associates. That’s why you want to keep your software and systems updated.
A trusted security program such as Norton 360TM can help keep your devices secure.
And that can potentially help all those people you interact with online. But it’s also
important to know anti-virus protection isn’t enough to protect your devices against all
cyberthreats

5. You deserve the latest and greatest

Updates not only patch security holes, they can also add new features and improve
existing ones. You don’t want to fall behind the times, right?

In that way, software updates really are all about you. Your software program may get a
new shot of stability — no more crashing. Or an update might boost program
performance — more speed. You deserve no less.

You could ignore those reminders to update your software, but you might be missing out
on a lot, starting with your cyber security.

Another option? If you’re still not keen on clicking “Update now,” you may be able to
configure your devices to update automatically. If so, your problem is solved.

INFORMATION SHEET 1.5-1

Test devices/systems and/or installation

Learning Objectives:

After reading this information sheet you must be able to:

• Follow OHS policies and procedures in conducting tests

• Check circuits and systems being isolated using specified testing procedures
• Test devices, systems and/or installation to determine its conformity with the
requirements

INTRODUCTION

In the previous lesson, you were introduced with all the necessary knowledge and skills on
installation of computer devices and operating system. Now, after executing the correct
procedures I am sure that installation is a very easy task for you.

As computer technician you will need a good understanding of the health and safety regulations
to understand the good practices demanded by law. In particular, you need to:

• report any accidents;

• take reasonable care of your own health and safety when moving heavy components;
• not cause any electrical hazards;
• Make sure that workstations meet safety requirements.

Technicians need to adhere to health and safety regulations as they will help to protect everyone
and to avoid any unnecessary legal action for reckless and unsafe working practices. Any health
and safety problems, the line manager or the health and safety representative must be informed
immediately.

The Use of Diagnostic Tools in testing installed hardware components and other peripheral

• Diagnostic tools are used to test and diagnose equipment.

Diagnostic tools

• Multi meter - is a device that can take many types of measurements. It tests the integrity
of circuits and the quality of electricity in computer components. A digital multi-meter
displays the information on an LCD or LED.

• Toner probe – is a two-part tool. The toner part is connected to a cable at one end using specific
adapters, such as an RJ-45, coaxial, or metal clips. The toner generates a tone that travels the
length of the cables.

The probe part traces the cable. When the probe is in near proximity to the cable to which the toner
is attached, the tone can be heard through a speaker in the probe.

Software tools

Disk Management Tools

Software tools help diagnose computer and network problems and determine which computer
device is not functioning correctly. A technician must be able to use a range of software tools to
diagnose problems, maintain hardware, and protect the data stored on a computer.

You must be able to identify which software to use in different situations. Disk management tools
help detect and correct disk errors, prepare a disk for data storage, and remove unwanted files.

The following are some disk management tools:

• FDISK: A command-line tool that creates and deletes partitions on a hard drive. The
FDISK tool is not available in Windows XP, Vista, or 7. It has been replaced with the Disk
Management tool.
• Disk Management Tool: Initializes disks, creates partitions, and formats partitions.
• Format: Prepares a hard drive to store information.
• ScanDisk or CHKDSK: Checks the integrity of files and folders on a hard drive by
scanning the file system. These tools might also check the disk surface for physical errors.
• Defragmentation: Optimizes space on a hard drive to allow faster access to programs
and data.
• Disk Cleanup: Clears space on a hard drive by searching for files that can be safely
deleted.
• System File Checker (SFC): A command-line tool that scans the operating system
critical files and replaces files that are corrupted.

Test procedures

A test procedure is a set of steps to guide you through what needs to be done to thoroughly test
the installation. It is designed to help you work more effectively and to make sure you test
everything that needs testing.

Test procedures are created in-house and could include these steps:

I. Gathering test information – The first step is to run the tests required by the procedure
and find out what happens. You should record all the results of your tests in a log so that
you know which pass and which fail, thereby requiring further action.

II. Validating the test information – The next step is to check the data you gathered from
the test to make sure it is correct. This is usually done by running the tests again.

III. Responding to test information – This step is important because you need to be able to
recognize when a test shows problems or is successful. For example, if ping is used to
test a network connection then “Request timed out” shows the test was not successful.

IV. Checking specification – The final step is an important end to testing. You need to check
the specification for the installation to make sure that it has been met. For example, if a
user requested an upgrade to make their display run at 1920 x 1200, then the ICT
professional should check that the graphics card and screen can do this

INFORMATION SHEET 1.5-2

Conduct stress test

Learning Objectives:

After reading this information sheet you must be able to:

• Understanding stress test

• Know how to check computer performance using task manager

INTRODUCTION

Stress testing is the process of determining the ability of a computer, network, program or device
to maintain a certain level of effectiveness under unfavorable conditions.

Stress testing is also extremely valuable for the following reasons:

• To check whether the system works under abnormal conditions.

• Displaying appropriate error message when the system is under stress.
• System failure under extreme conditions could result in enormous revenue loss
• It is better to be prepared for extreme conditions by executing Stress Testing.

Goals of Stress Testing

The goal of stress testing is to analyze the behavior of the system after a failure. For stress
testing to be successful, a system should display an appropriate error message while it is under
extreme conditions.

To conduct Stress Testing, sometimes, massive data sets may be used which may get lost
during Stress Testing. Testers should not lose this security-related data while doing stress
testing.

The main purpose of stress testing is to make sure that the system recovers after failure which
is called as recoverability.

LOAD TESTING

• Load Testing is to test the system behavior under normal workload conditions, and it is
just testing or simulating with the actual workload

• Load testing does not break the system

STRESS TESTING

• Stress testing is to test the system behavior under extreme conditions and is carried out
till the system failure.

• Stress testing tries to break the system by testing with overwhelming data or resources

How to check computer performance using task manager

Step 1: In the search box on the taskbar, search Task Manager > then select and hit enter Task
Manager

Step 2: If you have a slow internet connection and were looking to test a network intensive
