RHC Corbel

The document summarizes the design of a corbel for an engineering building in Catarman, Northern Samar. It checks that the corbel design meets requirements for shear span-to-depth ratio, bearing area, depth, and reinforcement. The corbel is designed as singly reinforced with 3 bars of 20mm diameter as primary tension reinforcement and 3 rows of closed stirrups with 2 legs of 10mm diameter bars as shear reinforcement.

V(dl) = 30.0 kN Shear force due to dead load Ah / Av(used) = 0.227 ....... OK
V(ll) = 33.0 kN Shear force due to live load Used Closed Stirrups: 3 rows,
T= 12.60 kN Tension force Each contains - 2 legs of T10
Provided Steel Bars:
Dia = 20.0 mm Tension steel bar diameter
Dia_shear = 10.0 mm stirrup steel bar diameter
R= 3.0 Rows Number of stirrup rows
n= 2.00 legs Number of stirrup legs per row
Structural Action Corbels:
Structural Action Corbels:
Transferred reaction is assumed at third point of bearing pad to simulate the rotation of supported element and triangular distribution
of stress under bearing pad.
a = (2/3) * Wp + e1 = 433.33 mm Shear span length

Check Shear Span-to-Depth ratio (a/d):

Design procedure is applicable for corbels with shear span to depth ratio less than or equal to one.
a / d = 0.732 Shear span-to-depth ration < 1 ....... OK

Determine Design Forces:

The critical section for design is taken at the face of the support. The section should be design to resist simultaneously the following
forces:
Vu = max of [ 1.2 * V(dl) + 1.6 * V(ll), 1.4 * V(dl)] = 88.8 kN Ultimate shear force
Tu = max of [ 1.6*T,0.2*Vu] = 20.16 kN Ultimate horizontal tensile force
Mu = Vu * a + Tu * (H - d) = 39.65 kN-m Ultimate moment

Note:
The minimum value of Tu = 0.2Vu is established to account for the uncertain behavior of a slip joint and/or flexible bearing.
Also, the tension force Tu typically is due to indeterminate causes such as restrained shrinkage or temparature stresses.
In any case it shall be treated as a live load with load factor of (1.6).
Corbel design procedure is applicable for Tu less than or equal to Vu.
Tu = 20.16 kN < Vu = 88.8 kN ....... OK

Strength Reduction Factors:

Since corbel & bracket design is predominantly controlled by shear, specifies that the strength reduction factor (phi) shall be equal to
0.75 for all design conditions (except for bearing check, phi shall be taken equal to 0.65).
phi = 0.65 Bearing on concrete
phi = 0.75 For all: shear, tension-controlled sections and compression-controlled sections

Check Adequacy of Bearing Area (Concrete Bearing Strength):

Pnb = Phi * 0.85 * f'c * Wp * Lp = 4143.75 kN Concrete bearing strength
Vu = 88.8 kN < Pnb = 4143.75 kN ....... OK

Check Adequacy of Corbel's Depth Based on Limiting Shear-Transfer Strength (Vn):

Shear Transfer Strength for Normal Concrete is given by:
Vn = min of {phi * 0.2 * f'c * B* d, phi * ( 3.3 + 0.08 * f'c ) * B * d, phi * 11 * B * d } = 1265.4 kN
Vu = 88.8 kN < Vn = 1265.4 kN ....... OK

Determine Shear-Friction Reinforcement (Avf):

Avf = Vu / (phi * fy * mu) = 201.36 mm^2
where:
mu = 1.4 * Lm for concrete placed monolithically
Lm =1 for normal weight concrete

Determine Direct Tension Reinforcement (An):

An = Tu / (phi * fy) = 64 mm^2

Determine Flexural Reinforcement (Af):

ec = 0.003 Concrete compressive strain
es = 0.005 Reinforcement tensile strain
0.85 > = { beta = 0.85 - 0.05 [( f'c - 28 ) / 7]} > = 0.65, then beta = 0.835 Equivalent depth factor
Ct = [ ec / ( ec + es )] * d = 222 mm Neutral axis depth
Ymax = beta * Ct = 185.53 mm Maximum equivalent compressive block depth
Y = d - { sqrt ( d * d - [(2 * Mu) / ( phi * 0.85 * f'c * B)])} = 7.05 mm Equivalent compressive block depth
Y = 7.05 mm is lesser than Ymax = 185.53 mm Section work as singly reinforced section
Af = 0.85 * f'c * B * Y / fy = 214.02 mm^2 Required area of flexural reinforcement
Determine Primary Tension Reinforcement (Asc):
1.5*Af = 214.02 mm^2 > Avf = 201.36 mm^2, therefore (Af) controls design
Asc(req) = Af + An = 278.02 mm^2 Required area of primary tension reinforcement

Check minimum reinforcement Asc(min):

Asc(min) = 0.04 * (f'c / fy ) * B * d = 845.71 mm^2 Minimum area of primary tension reinforcement
Asc(used) = Max of { Asc(req), Asc(min) } = 845.71 mm^2 Used arera of primary tension reinforcement
N(used) = [Asc(used)/(0.25*3.1416*Dia^2)] = 3 pcs
Used steel: 3 T 20

Determine Shear Tension Reinforcement (Ah):

Ah = 0.5*(Asc - An) = (1/2) * Af = 107.01 mm^2 Required area of shear reinforcement
Note:
(Ah): Area of shear reinforcement to be provided as a closed stirrups parallel to (Asc) and uniformly ditributed within (2/3)*d
adjacent to (Asc)
R = 3 rows Numbe of rows of closed stirrups
n = 2 legs Number of stirrup legs per row
pi = 3.1416
Av(used) = 0.25 * pi * (Dia_shear)^2 = 471.24 mm^2
Ah / Av(used) = 0.227 (demand over the capacity shear reinforcement ratio is less than 1.0) ....... OK
Used steel (Closed Stirrups): 3 rows, Each contains : 2 legs of T10

Typical Corbel Reinfocement Detail:

Development and Anchorage of Reinforcement:

1. Anchorage of (Asc) is normally provided by welding an anchor bar or equal size across the ends of Asc [Figure (a)] or welding to an
armor angle. In the former case, the anchor bar must be located beyods the edge of the loaded area.
2. Where anchorage is provided by a hook or a loop in Asc, the load must not project beyond the straight portion of the hook or loop
[Figure (b)].
Note: Depth at outside edge of bearing area shall not be less than (d/2)
