GOAL:
Students will be able to identify the three stages of matter with 100% accuracy
Students will be able to sort different items into the right stage of matter
LEARNER OUTCOME(S):
After Sorting items students will have an understanding of what items have what type of matter
After conducting an experiment students will be able to Grasp the concept of the three stages of
matter

Before
- I will have students think about what matter is, what is matter? What are the three main
types of matter? We will hold a group discussion on these questions
- I will go over the three main types of matter
o Solids, liquids, gas
- Next we will do a sorting activity as a class
o We will go over what items are what and why they are classified as that type of
matter
- After that we will move onto our experiment
o I will prompt the students by asking them questions such as What state of matter is
the cup in? What state of matter is the soda in?
o I will have students create a hypothesis of what they think is going to happen when
the ice cream hits/mixes with the soda.
o Students will gather their materials and head back to their desk
o I will propt students to fill their cup with soda as I am passing the ice cream out
o I will ask students to open their ice cream and mix it with the soda and tell them to
watch and take note what happens.
After
- Once we finish our experiment and students are enjoying their floats, we will hold a group
discussion
o I will explain how the ice cream coated the co2 in the soda to create a contained gas.
