DACE Labour Norms V2 / Equipment Installation
1 Introduction
This section includes labour norms for Equipment installation work.
The labour norms listed are for direct labour only and have no bearing on equipment or material
cost, constructions, equipment rental, small tools or overhead (other than listed in the man-hour all
in rate). For the general description of labour norms we refer to the “DACE Labour Norms – general
description”.

All labour for unloading from railroad cars or trucks, storing in storage yard or warehouse, hauling to
installation site and installing are included in the man-hours listed.

2 Installation of Static Equipment

2.1 General
All labour norms shown in the following tables include:
 Unloading near foundation
 Assembling (if applicable)
 Rigging
 Alignment
 Bolting

Not included are:
 Check and adjustment of foundations
 Grouting
 Cranes and lifting devices
 Scaffolding
 Hydro testing
 Internals
 Platforms, ladders etc
 Cleaning

2.2 Installation of Vessels / Columns and Towers

2.2.1 Pressure vessel horizontal (drum)

A horizontal pressure vessel is a horizontal oriented, placed on saddles and designed to hold gases
or liquids at a pressure substantially different from the ambient pressure.
The pressure vessels are widely used in the process industries (oil & gas, chemical,
pharmaceutical, plastics and rubber and the food and beverage industry) and high temperature
process industry (glass, paper and board).

2
DACE Labour Norms V2 / Equipment Installation
2.2.2 Pressure vessel vertical
A vertical pressure vessel is a vertical oriented and designed to hold gases or liquids at a pressure
substantially different from the ambient pressure.
The pressure vessels are widely used in the process industries (oil & gas, chemical,
pharmaceutical, plastics and rubber and the food and beverage industry) and high temperature
process industry (glass, paper and board).

2.2.3 Column (tower)

Columns are widely used in the chemical process industries where large quantities of liquids have
to be distilled. Such industries are the petroleum processing, petrochemical production, natural gas
processing, coal tar processing, brewing, liquefied air separation, and hydrocarbon solvents
production and similar industries but it finds its widest application in petroleum refineries.
The following definitions are used in the column estimate model:
1) Wall
2) Ends (heads)
3) Skirt
4) Skirt top ring
5) Gusset
6) Skirt bottom ring
7) Tube lure
8) Manhole
9) Insulation ring
10) Tray support ring

2.3 Installation of Trays and Demisters

2.3.1 Demister Pads

A demister is a device often fitted to vapour liquid separator vessels to enhance the removal of
liquid droplets entrained in a vapour stream. Demisters may be a mesh type coalescer, vane pack
or other structure intended to aggregate the mist into droplets that are heavy enough to separate
from the vapour stream. Demister packs are also used in vessels frequently.

2.3.2 Sieve Trays

Sieve trays are best suited for absorption of highly soluble but volatile compounds such as alcohols
and other soluble organics as well as some acid gases. This type of configuration minimizes water
usage while achieving maximum contaminant removal. Sieve trays are also less prone to plugging
than packed towers and can effectively remove particulate down to 5 microns in size.

2.3.3 Valve trays

In valve trays, perforations are covered by lift able caps. Vapour flows lifts the caps, thus self
creating a flow area for the passage of vapour. The lifting cap directs the vapour to flow horizontally
into the liquid, thus providing better mixing than is possible in sieve trays.

2.4 Installation of Exchangers / Condensers / Reboilers

2.4.1 Fixed tube, sheet or U-tube heat exchanger

A heat exchanger is a device built for efficient heat transfer from one medium to another. The media
may be separated by a solid wall, so that they never mix. They are widely used in space heating,
refrigeration, air conditioning, power plants, chemical plants, petrochemical plants, petroleum
refineries, and natural gas processing.

A floating head exchanger is excellent for applications where the difference in temperature between
the hot and cold fluid causes unacceptable stresses in the axial direction of the shell and tubes. The
floating head can move, i.e. provides the possibility to expand in the axial direction.

2.5 Installation of Airfin Coolers
An air cooler is a device for ejecting heat from a fluid directly to ambient air. This is in contrast to
ejecting heat to water and then ejecting it to air, as with a shell and tube heat exchanger and a wet
cooling tower system. The obvious advantage of an air cooler is that it does not require water,
which means that plants requiring large cooling capacities need not be located near a supply of
cooling water.

3.4 Installation of Compressors

3.4.1 Centrifugal compressor

Centrifugal compressors are used throughout industry because they have fewer rubbing parts, are
relatively energy efficient, and give higher airflow than a similarly sized reciprocating compressor.
Their primary drawback is that they cannot achieve the high compression ratio of reciprocating
compressors without multiple stages. Centrifugal fan/blowers are more suited to continuous-duty
applications such as ventilation fans, air movers, cooling units, and other uses that require high
volume with little or no pressure increase.

3.4.2 Reciprocating compressor
A reciprocating compressor or piston compressor is a positive-displacement compressor that uses
pistons driven by a crankshaft to deliver gases at high pressure. We can categorize reciprocating
compressors into many types and for many applications. Primarily, it is used in a great many
industries, including oil refineries, gas pipelines, chemical plants, natural gas processing plants and
refrigeration plants.

4 Miscellaneous Equipment

4.1 Belt conveyors

A belt conveyor consists of two or more pulleys, with a continuous loop of material - the conveyor
belt - that rotates about them. One or both of the pulleys are powered, moving the belt and the
material on the belt forward. Belt conveyors are commonly used to convey items with irregular
bottom surfaces or small items that would fall in between rollers.
