LESSON 1: THE CONCEPT AND IMPORTANCE OF LISTENING

TASK 1. How good are your listening skills?

Imagine your typical day. How do you usually spend it? Perhaps, listening your teacher's lecture,
watching and listening to TV shows, and listening to music. For many of us, we spend most of
our day listening. So, how good do you think your listening skill is?
Using the listening skills self-inventory below, check the statement which +describes who you
are rather than what you should be.

Yes, I Well, I Oh, I have

always do sometime never
this s do this. done this
I give my full attention when listening and stop
whatever it is I’m doing.
2 I let the person finish talking first before I
respond/ speak.
3 I clarify important points in the conversation by
restating and paraphrasing what is said.
4 I ask question to clarify ideas from the person
talking.
5 I ask question to get people to elaborate on their
points.
6 I withhold judgements and personal opinions
about the topic until the person is finish with
what he/she has to say.
7 If the person hesitates, I encourage him/her to
continue rather than talking myself.
8 I still listen to the person and let him/her finish
even though I already know what he/she is saying
9 I respond appropriately while listening by giving 9
non-verbal gestures like head nods and verbal
cues like "ok".
10 I still listen fully regardless of a person's status,
manner of speaking, background, culture, and the
like.
11 I respect sensitive topics shared with me and
make an effort to put the person at ease.
12 As I listen, I also try to understand the other
person speaking by reading his/her body
language.
So how are you doing? Which items do you sometimes do? How about those that you haven’t
done?
List down your realizations after doing the activity.

TASK 2 Listened to…

Over the last 24 hours, create a list of the different listening experiences you have with people
speaking. Who was speaking and they were you listening?

WHO WAS SPEAKING? WHY WERE YOU LISTENING TO THEM?

LESSON 2: STRATEGIES IN TEACHING LISTENING

Task 1. Listening Skills Self-Assessment Inventory
In the previous lesson, you already did a self-inventory on your overall listening skills. This time,
let's zoom in on how well you do during class lecture Imagine the activities that you do before,
during, and after attending a class lecture, then answer the listening skills inventory below.

Yes, I Well, I Oh, I

successful.
Before When attending online synchronous classes, I find a
comfortable place where there are minimum
distractions.
I read about the topic or the learning outcomes
before the lecture
I think about what I already know about the topic. I
make sure that I am ready for the lecture and set
aside concerns from the previous class.
I see to it that all materials needed (pen, paper,
textbook, etc) are ready.
Before the start of class, I turn off other gadgets when
not in use to avoid distractions.
Durin I try to focus on the main concepts and facts instead
g of trying to record everything.
I take down notes during lectures and abbreviate,
paraphrase, and use bullet points to stay concise and
save time.
I look for signal words and meaning in the
presentation I write questions or areas of confusion to
raise after the lecture.
I give feedback through non-verbal signals and
respond orally when my teacher asks me to.
After Task questions and clarifications.
I follow up on the presentation by reviewing notes
and organizing them to clarify meaning.
I ask myself questions about the lecture and then try
to answer them in my own words.
I go over the main points of the lecture in my own
words.

a. Look into the English Curriculum Guide and choose one competency (from grade level) from
the Listening Comprehension (LC) domain.
