Maintenance and Care for Mega Water Wagon Parts

WATER PUMP

Warning: Do not operate water pump

without water in the volute case.

Lubrication: Pump should be lubricated every

400 hours or 3 months which ever
comes first, using Shell Alvania Grease Points
#2 bearing grease or a comparable
substitute.

Stuffing Box: The stuffing box must not be run dry as it is water lubricated. Before pump is started for
the first time, loosen gland nuts and re-tighten finger tight. Tighten nuts evenly until
water is coming out of the stuffing box in droplet form. Water must not be spraying or
running out of the stuffing box in a continuous stream. To maintain the recommended
flow rate for cooling & lubrication, periodic adjustment is recommended.

Re-packing: If packing gland is tightened to the limit of travel, additional packing is required. Stop
pump, remove packing gland nuts and insert one or more packing rings as required.
Replace gland nuts and adjust for proper leakage. If additional packing does not prevent
excessive leakage, a complete re-packing is necessary. Remove gland nuts and gland.
Remove old packing, using a packing hook or stiff wire. If the new packing is in coil
form, cut rings to fit completely around shaft. Do not place continuous coil of packing
into box. Place rings into stuffing box so that joints are staggered at 90° apart. After
stuffing box is completely packed, replace, then adjust gland nuts and operate pump.
Packing must be allowed to wear in. Adjust packing gland for proper leakage.

Replacement: KEYED SHAFT PUMP - Disconnect coupling. Remove old pump and install new
pump. Check the alignment of the coupling in four (4) places 90° apart. Maximum
misalignment is 1/32”. Tighten coupling clamp bolts to 13 ft-lbs.

FLANGE MOUNT PUMP - Remove four (4) bolts retaining motor to pump housing,
and remove motor. Align new motor with spline coupling inside pump housing and
push into position. Replave four (4) bolts and torque to 72-ft.lbs.

Maintenance and Care for Magnum Water Wagon Parts

HYDRAULIC MOTOR

Lubrication: Lubrication is by the hydraulic oil

passing through the motor.

Hydraulic Fluid: A good quality hydraulic oil is essential

to satisfactory performance and long
life of any hydraulic system. Before
starting for the first time, the hydraulic
fluid and filters should be changed and the
complete hydraulic system flushed. The
viscosity of the fluid used should be 150 to 220 SSU
@ 100°F. Any oil added to the system should be filtered through a 100
mesh screen. Filters should be cleaned at regular intervals. In the case that
the oil becomes contaminated, the fluid and filters must be changed and the
system flushed.

Replacement: KEYED SHAFT PUMP - Remove and plug hydraulic lines. Disconnect
coupling. Remove old hydraulic motor and install new motor. Replace cou-
pling and check alignment in four (4) places 90° apart. Maximum amount
of misalignment is 1/32”.

FLANGE MOUNT PUMP - Remove four (4) bolts retaining motor to

pump housing, and remove motor. Align new motor with spline coupling
inside pump housing, and push into position. Replace four (4) bolts and
torque to 72 ft-lbs.

Operation of Magnum Water Tank

Preventative maintenance should be practiced on the water tank components as well as the
prime mover. The condition of the air and hydraulic lines and all hardware pertaining to the
unit should be checked periodically.

CAUTION: Pump should be engaged at engine idle only & only if water exists in the
tank.

MAGNUM CONTROL PANEL

Controls:

The control panel consists of rocker switches for

engaging power to the pump, spray heads,
foam injector, work light and intermittent spray
mode. It can also be equipped with a water level gauge,
a gauge adjustment knob and high & low indicators.
A timer is on the panel for setting intermittent timing.

Operation of Magnum Water Tank

MAGNUM CONTROL PANEL - STRAIGHT/AIR WITH REMOTE MONITOR

Controls
The control panel consists of lever air switches used to turn the air supply on & off
for actuation of spray heads. The air control valve is used to turn on & off an air cylinder
or a butterfly valve.

Note: Spray volume is controlled by engine rpm.

Magnum Spray Head Adjustment

Spray Density:
3/8” and 1/4”
The density can be set at either a 3/8” opening or a 1/4” openings
opening by loosening the adjusting knob and rotating the
adjusting ring. If a lower density is required, (other than
the the two settings just mentioned) the adjusting ring can
be turned over. The opening can then be set at any 360 degree
height. To do this, simply unbolt the spray head and flip direction control
the ring 180 degrees. from 3/8” bolts on

Controlling the direction of the spray is done by simply

loosening two 3/8” bolts that mount the spray head. The
spray head can be rotated 360 degrees each side of center.

The width of the spray is set by loosening the knob and

Troubleshooting The Magnum Water Tank

1. Water will not spray:
a) Air pressure too low to shift hydraulic valve (if so equipped).
b) Insufficient air pressure, check for air leaks.
c) Check for proper setting on units that have an air regulator circuit.
40 to 45 psi for B6 pump
55 to 60 psi for B3 pump
75 to 80 psi for B4 pump

2. Motor does not turn when engaged:

a) Hydraulic oil level could be low.
b) Relief valve may be stuck or may have been tampered with. Insufficient pressure to
turn motor under load.
c) Pump may be faulty.
d) Pump filter may be clogged.
e) Motor could be faulty.
f) CAUTION: The hydraulic motor must turn correct rotation or damage to the pump
will result.
g) Oil line or sump in oil tank may be plugged, slowing or stopping oil flow.

3. Water runs out of spray head with pump on and sprayhead switch not engaged:
a) Insufficient air pressure.
b) Diaphragm could be ruptured or leaking air (replacement per drawing #300198 in the
parts book).

4. Systems with electric controlled water valves:

a) Check items listed above
b) Check solenoids for broken wires or if there is voltage at the solenoid
c) Manually check solenoid by depressing plunger on top of solenoid. Should this work
and the voltage and air pressure are available, solenoid is faulty.

OPERATION OF THE FOAM FIRE FIGHTING

SYSTEMS FOR MEGA WATER TANKERS

1. Fill the foam agent tank with regular AFFF concentrates or Polar Solvent type AFFF
foam agent.

2. With the water tank full, the nozzle should be pre-set for the percentage of foam to
water. The Hydro-Foam Nozzle Venturi on the monitor (water cannon) is preset at
6% proportioning, but can be changed to 3% or 1 %, but 6% is the most widely used.
Select the percentage most likely desired.

3. Turn the water pump on, increase engine RPM, turn water on at the monitor, then
turn the switch to the foam agent tank on. Within seconds, the foam agent will be
injected into the water stream, spraying foam on the desired subject.

CAB CONTROL OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS
1. Spray head valve operation:
„ Moving the system on switch to the on position
engages the hoist valve. This directs hydraulic
oil to the hydraulic motor located on the water
pump. This should be done at low idle only.
This switch also provides power to all of the
other options provided with your unit. Engage
the water pump, with the engine at idle, and
increase the engine RPM to full, using the gear
you need to provide the speed you will want to
be at while spraying.
„ Move the switches to the on position for
the spray head valves you wish to spray
with, this will shut off the air to that
spray head valve and will allow it to
spray.
„ When finished move the switches to the
off position, spraying will stop.
„ Lower the engine RPM to low idle, and
disengage the water pump.
„ When finished with all operations, move
the system switch to off, this will shut
off power to all switches on the control
panel, to prevent any problems.
2. Remote monitor operation:

„ Repeat step #1 of spray head operation above.

„ Turn on the remote monitor switch below the
the joy stick, this energizes the air actuated
butterfly valve on the remote monitor, which
will allow the water to begin to spray through
the remote monitor.
„ Increase engine RPM to full RPM for desired
spraying distance.
„ To operate the joy stick, forward is down,
back is up, right is right, left is left. Direct the
stream where you need it.

3. Intermittent spray operations:
„ Move the system switch to the on position, this energizes all switches on the control panel.
„ Move the intermittent control switch on the control panel to the intermittent operation position.
„ Set the timer for the time in seconds for the spray intervals you wish to select as follows:
1. Using the minus buttons above the number/alpha pads and the plus buttons
below the number/alpha pads. Minus pads decrease the numbers or alpha
letters, the plus buttons increase the number or alpha letters. Adjust the times as follows:
2. Set the first digit to (B).
3. Set the next three digits for the seconds interval you wish to select for your spraying interval.
(Example 015 = 15 second intervals, 045 = 45 second intervals).
4. Set the 5th digit to (S).
5. Engage your water pump with the engine RPM at low idle only, and increase engine RPM
to full RPM in the gear that will give you the speed you need for the area you are spraying.
6. Select the spray head valves you wish to spray from and move those switches to the on position,
this will shut off the air holding the valve shut, and will allow it to spray.
7. When you are finished with the intermittent operation, simply move the
intermittent control switch to the constant position, and this will end the intermittent operation.

CAB CONTROL OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS

4. All other switches on the control panel are operated as follows:

„ Move the system switch to the on position, this provides power to the control box and all
of the switches on it.
„ Select which function you need to use and move that switch to the on position.
„ When finished move all switches to the off position and move the system switch to off.
This will remove power from the box in case a switch should accidentally be bumped
into the on position. It will not affect anything as there will be no power applied to the
switch.
5. Water level indicator gauge operation:
„ The system switch on the control panel must be moved to the “on”
position, this will provide power to the water level gauge.
„ The water level gauge will no show the water level in the tank.

Place 300409 drop in assembly on housing base, item #1. Place

upper housing, item #8, on housing base and measure distance ‘A’.
Install nuts, items #6, on threaded rod of hydraulic cylinder., item #9.
Fully extend hydraulic cylinder. Adjust bottom nut, to 1/16” further NOTES:
than length A and lock with top nut to create proper preload. 1. TORQUE TO 10-12 FT-LBS.
2. TORQUE TO 18-20 FT-LBS.
Remove upper housing and thread bimba nut, item #7, to
attach hydraulic cylinder. Align flat wall of bimba nut with
set screw hole. Install set screw, item #10, and tighten
just enough to hold nut in place. Rotate hydraulic
cylinder to tighten. The exhaust port in housing and the
inlet ports of hydraulic cylinder should be on the same
side or as close as possible. If not on the same side,
loosen hydraulic cylinder and move to
another flat side. Once aligned, tighten
set screw, item #10.

Insert spring, item #5, and attach upper and

lower housing. Tighten cap screws in a
alternating pattern. See note #1.

Install item #2 & #3 adjusting ring and thumb

screw tighten in place.
