Virtual Machines

Virtual machines allow an operating system to run in isolation on top of another host operating system. This is done through emulation of virtual hardware which makes the guest operating system think it is communicating with real hardware when in reality it is being managed by a hypervisor or virtual machine manager on the host system. Virtual machines provide benefits like running multiple operating systems in parallel, testing applications in isolation without affecting the host system, and using new software that may not be compatible with older hardware. However, virtual machines have limitations like reduced performance compared to running directly on hardware and increased management complexity.
