Ii-I FM Mid 2 QP

This document contains two sets of mid-semester exam questions for a Fluid Mechanics course. Set 1 asks students to 1) explain how series, parallel and equivalent pipe connections are analyzed and discuss Reynolds' experiment, 2) use measurements from a Pitot tube and Venturi meter to calculate flow rates, and 3) derive the Von Karman momentum integral equation and define energy thickness. Set 2 asks students to 1) derive the Hagen-Poiseuille equation and use it to solve a pipe enlargement problem, 2) use measurements to find the minimum throat diameter of a venturi meter, and 3) differentiate between laminar and turbulent boundary layers and discuss the characteristics of a boundary layer

1 a) Explain how the following flow problems are analyzed.

Series pipe connection
(ii) Parallel pipe connection
iii) Equivalent pipe connection.

b) Explain how Reynold’s experiment is conducted in the lab and bring its practical uses.

2a) A Pitot tube was used to measure the quantity of water flowing in a pipe of 0.30m diameter. The
water was raised to a height of 0.25m above the centre line of pipe in the vertical limb of the tube. If
the mean velocity is 0.78 times the velocity at the centre and coefficient of Pitot tube is 0.98, find the
discharge in the pipe line. The static pressure head at the centre of the pipe is 0.2 m.

b) A Venturi-meter is provided to measure the water flowing through a horizontal pipe of 25 cm

diameter. The throat of the venture- meter is 12cm. The pressure of water flowing through the pipe is
1.5 bar and the vacuum measured at the throat is 30 cm of Hg. Find the water flow rate through the
pipe. Take Cd=0.975.

3.a) Derive Von Karman momentum integral equation.

b) Define energy thickness. Derive an expression for the energy thickness.

1. a) Derive Hagen-Poiseulle equation.

b) The rate of flow of water through a horizontal pipe is 0.3m3/sec. The diameter of the pipe is
suddenly enlarged from 25cm to 50cm. The pressure intensity in the smaller pipe is 1.4Kgf/cm2.
Determine loss of head due to sudden enlargement, pressure intensity in the large pipe and power
lost due to enlargement.

2. a) Water flows through a horizontal venturimeter of inlet diameter 15 cm and inlet pressure 215
kpa (absolute). Find the minimum throat diameter for the meter to pass a discharge of 150 lps
without causing cavitations. Assume saturation vapour pressure of water = -80 kpa (guage).
Assume atmospheric pressure = 76cm of mercury and Cd of the meter is 0.978.

b) Explain the flow over rectangular and triangular notches.

3. a) Differentiate between laminar and turbulent Boundary layers. (7M)

b) Discuss the Characteristics of boundary layer along a thin flat plate with neat sketch.
