Module-I Course RBT

1. a) Explain clearly different components of load torque with its (08 Marks) L3
characteristics. Also give a brief description of classification of
load torque.
b) Obtain expression for equivalent for load torque and equivalent of (09 Marks) L3
motor drive with (1) translational and (2) Rotational motor load.
c) A motor equipped with a flywheel is to supply a load torque of (08 Marks) L4
1000 N-m for 10sec followed by a light load period of 200N-m
long enough for the flywheel to regain its steady state speed. It is
desired to limit the motor torque to 700N-m. What should be the
moment of inertia? Motor has inertia of flywheel? Motor has an
inertia of 10kg-m2. Its no load speed is 500rpm and the slip at a
torque of 500N-m is 5%. Assume speed torque characteristics of
motor to be a straight line in the region of interest.
2. a) With basic block diagram, explain the essential parts of electrical (08 Marks) L1
drives.
b) Explain the speed torque conventions and multiquadrant operations (09 Marks) L2
of motor driving a hoist load.
c) A drive has following parameters: J=10kg-m2, T=100-0.1N,N- (08 Marks) L3
m, passive load torque Tl=0.05N, N-m, where N is the speed in
rpm. Initially the drive is operating in steady state. Now it is to
be reversed. For this motor characteristics is changed to T= -
100-0.1N,N-m. Calculate the time reversal.
Module-II
3. a) Explain with neat circuit diagram and relevant waveforms, a single (08 Marks) L1
phase fully controlled rectifier, control of separately excited DC
motors.
b) A 230V, 960rpm and 200A separately excited dc motor has an (09 Marks) L2
armature resistance of 0.02ohm. The motor is fed from a
chopper which provides both motoring and braking operation.
The source has a voltage of 230V. Assume continuous condition.
(1) Calculate duty ratio of chopper for motoring operation at
rated torque and 350rpm. (2) Calculate duty ratio of chopper
for braking operation at rated torque and 350rpm.
c) Explain multiquadrant operation of dc separately excited motor (08 Marks) L3
fed from fully controlled rectifier with three different schemes.
4. a) Explain with neat circuit diagram of chopper control of separately (09 Marks) L4
excited dc motors with motoring and braking control.
b) A 200V, 875rpm, 150A separately excited dc motor has an (08 Marks) L3
armature resistance of 0.06ohm. It is fed from a single phase fully
controlled rectifier with an AC source voltage of 220V, 50Hz.
Assuming continuous conduction, calculate (1) firing angle for
rated motor torque (-500rpm). (2) motor speed for @=760 and rated

c) Explain in brief about supply Harmonics, power factor and (09 Marks) L2
Ripple in motor current.

5. a) Derive expression for time required to stop the induction motor (06 Marks) L2
by plugging when running at synchronous speed.
b) Explain AC dynamic braking of 3-phase induction motor with (1) (10 Marks) L3
Two lead connection.(2) Three lead connection.
c) A 400V, star connected three phase 6pole 50Hz induction (09 Marks) L4
motor has following parameters referred to the stator
Rs=Rr’=1ohm, Xs=Xs’=2ohm.For regerative braking
operation of this motor determine: (1) Maximum overhauling
torque it can hold and range of speed for safe operation. (2)
Speed at which it will hold an overhauling load with a torque of
100N-m.
6. a) Explain the operation of induction motor with unbalanced source (08 Marks) L1
voltage with relevant equations.
b) Explain DC dynamic braking of a three phase induction motor. (07 Marks) L2
c) A 2200V 50HZ 3-phase 6pole star connected, squirrel cage (10 Marks) L4
induction motor has following parameters: Rs=0.075ohm,
Rr’=0.12ohm,Xs=Xr’=0.5ohm. The combined inertia of motor
and load is 100kg-m2. (1) Calculate time taken and energy
dissipated in motor during starting. (2) Calculate time taken
and energy dissipated in the motor when it is stopped by
plugging.

7. a) With a neat circuit diagram and relevant waveforms, explain the (08 Marks) L2
operation of voltage source inverter drive system.
b) With a neat drive circuit, explain the static scherbius drive. (10 Marks) L3
c) A star connected squirrel cage induction motor has following (07 Marks) L4
ratings and parameters: 400V,
50Hz,4poles,1370rpm,Rs=2ohm, Rr’=3ohm,
Xs=Xr’=3.5ohms,Xm=55ohm. It is controlled by current source
inverter at constant flux. Calculate (1) Motor torque,speed and
stator current when operating at 30Hz and rated slip speed.
8. a) Draw the block diagram of variable frequency control of multiple (08 Marks) L2
synchronous motors.
b) Explain the operation from fixed frequency supply with starting and (09 Marks) L3
pull-in process.
c) What are the comparison between Current Source (08 Marks) L3
Inverter(CSI) and Voltage Source Inverter (VSI).

9. a) Explain the operation of self controlled synchronous motor drive (10 Marks) L2
employing load commutated thyristor inverter.
b) Explain brushless DC motor drive for Servo applications. (08 Marks) L2
c) Explain the steady- state stability limit, Dynamic stability and (07 Marks) L3
Braking in synchronous motor.
10 a) Explain variable reluctance type stepper motor. (08 Marks) L2
