BASKETBALL
(Nature and Background)
Basketball was invented during the
school year of 1891-92 at
Springfield College in Springfield
Massachusetts.
Dr. James A. Naismith, the inventor
of the game conceived the idea of
attaching peach baskets at
opposite ends of the gym on the
track that encircled the playing
floor.
Basic concepts:
Basketball is played by two teams
of five players each.
The object of the game is to score
more points than your opponents.
Basketball derives its name from
the original ball and basket used in
the first games.The game was
introduced in YMCA’s across
America and also to foreign
countries.
Basketball became part of the
Olympic Games in 1936.
Basic rules:
Personal fouls- any type of illegal
physical contact.
-Pushing - holding
-Hitting - illegal pick/screen
-Slapping
Fouls
b.1. charging- offensive fouls that is
committed when a player pushes /
runs over a defensive player.
b.2. blocking- illegal physical
contact preventing an opponents
drive to the basket.
b.3 intentional foul -a player makes
physical contact with another
player with no reasonable effort to
steal the ball.
b.4. technical foul- a player / coach
can commit this foul.
VIOLATIONS
Travelling- taking morethan a step
and a half without dribbling the
ball.
Double dribble – dribbling the ball
with two hands,
Held ball- two or more player will
gain possession of the ball at the
same time.
Goal tending- a defensive player
interferes with a shot while its on
the way down toward the basket.
Backcourt violation- offensive
player brought the ball across mid-
court line.
Time restrictions- passing the ball
inbounds has 5 seconds to pass the
ball.
