Before We Start
• Firstly, a website or an app needs to be useful and meet users’
demands
• But the environments or the devices may have limitations
• Small screen problem
• Resource shortage
• Memory shortage
•…
• Then how can we make our app more user-friendly and useful?
2
What are User Experience (UX),
Usability, and User Interface (UI)?
• User Experience (UX)
• Is the impression and satisfaction that a user gets when interacting with a
product (app)
• It focuses on understanding user’s needs, behaviors, and preferences while
designing an app
• So, design an app that covers user’s needs and gets positive impression or
feedbacks
3
Cont.
• Usability
• A subset of UX
• Refers to the ease with which users can complete their tasks while using an
app
• A measurement of how user-friendly an app is
• Target is to find issues that a user may face while interacting with an app
4
Cont.
• User Interface (UI)
• Refers to the visual elements, layouts, and other components that users see
and interact with while using an app
• Can be menus, icons, buttons,…
• Targets on designing more appealing interfaces
5
6
Problems with Our Devices and Designs
• Small screen size
• It may be challenging to create visually appealing and
user-friendly interfaces
• Users may face issues while reading, touching, and
navigating
• Touch sensitivity
• Inconsistent touch sensitivity can lead to disappointment
7
Cont.
• Complex navigation
• Complex or hidden navigation can confuse users
• Loading time
• Slow loading time for content can lead to impatient users
• Inconsistent design patterns
• Inconsistency across different menu can confuse users
8
Cont.
• Unwanted permissions
• Apps may request excessive permissions without any explanations
• Users may hesitate to grant the permissions
• Content overload
• Apps may include excessive content or options
• Users may find it difficult to keep track
9
So, What Can be Done?
• Gain knowledge about users
• Track their patterns of usage and demands
• Follow user-centric design principles
10
Why User-centric Design/UX Design
Principles are Important?
• There is a difference between designing an app and designing a
website
• Users do not want to download an app as the mobile version of the
website
• They want a unique experience
• 75% of downloaded apps are opened only once
11
User-centric Design/UX Design
Principles
• Make navigation intuitive
• Users should be able to identify how to get around
an app
• Using icons or patterns can ease it
• Focus on user goals
• Think about what a user actually wants on an app
• Making features easy can improve UX
• Ex: Avoid login option
12
Cont.
• Allow personalization
• Push the contents that a user is demanding
• It removes unnecessary and irrelevant contents
• Make things easier
• Avoid complex UI
• Reduce content in a single activity
• Allow customization
• Provide users with features to customize their UI
13
Cont.
• Use established gestures
• Try to keep the same gestures that are common and users are used to
• Example: Zooming, taking screenshot,…
• Focus on speed
• Minimize data input
14
How to Make UX, Usability, and UI Better?
• Good UX includes
• Consideration of users’ feelings: trust, joy, or frustration
• Research to understand and provide the best possible design
• Integration of requirements, technology,…
• Good Usability includes
• Fast-loading facility
• Sufficient content
15
Cont.
• Good UI includes
• Free from unnecessary distractors
• Minimal, clear and complete design
• Consistent contents
