Overview of Computer Networks

A computer network connects computing devices like phones, laptops, and servers to transmit and share information. Devices connect through physical wires or wirelessly using protocols that help send and receive data. There are different types of networks including local area networks (LANs) within a building, personal area networks (PANs) around an individual, metropolitan area networks (MANs) connecting LANs, and wide area networks (WANs) spanning large areas. Computer networks have many applications such as sharing internet access, files, printers, and applications to facilitate modern communication and connectivity.

Overview of computer networks.

A computer network is a system that connects two or more computing devices for transmitting and
sharing information. Computing devices include everything from a mobile phone to a server. These
devices are connected using physical wires such as fiber optics, but they can also be wireless.

The working of Computer Networks can be simply defined as rules or protocols which help in sending
and receiving data via the links which allow Computer networks to communicate. Each device has an IP
Address, that helps in identifying a device.

Types of computer networks

A computer network can be categorized by their size. A computer network is mainly of four types:

LAN(Local Area Network)- a group of computers connected to each other in a small area such as
building, office.

PAN(Personal Area Network)- a network arranged within an individual person, typically within a range of
10 meters.

MAN(Metropolitan Area Network)- a network that covers a larger geographic area by interconnecting a
different LAN to form a larger network.

WAN(Wide Area Network)-a network that extends over a large geographical area such as states or
countries.

Applications of computer networks

Computer networks are fundamental to modern communication and connectivity, facilitating the
exchange of data and information among devices. Some common applications of computer networks
include:

1.internet and www

2.resource sharing

3. in business application

4. in education

5. in telecommunication

6. in entertainment

7. in healthcare

8. IoT
Internet and WWW

The Internet is the global network of computing devices including desktop, laptop, servers, tablets,
mobile phones, other handheld devices, etc. Computers are either connected to a modem through a
cable or wirelessly (WiFi). That modem, be it wired or wireless, is connected to a local Internet Service
Provider (ISP) who then connects to a national network. The Internet today is a widespread network, it is
being used by everyone in the society as is evident from the increasing use of online tools for education,
creativity, entertainment,socialisation, and e-commerce.

The World Wide Web (WWW) or web in short, is an ocean of information, stored in the form of trillions
of interlinked web pages and web resources. The resources on the web can be shared or accessed
through the Internet.

Resource sharing

Resource sharing is a fundamental concept in computer networking, enabling users to access and utilize
various resources, such as files, printers, applications, and more, across a network.

1. File Sharing: Allows users to access files and directories stored on remote computers as if they were
local.

2. Printer Sharing: Enables multiple users to share a single printer connected to a network, reducing the
need for individual printers.

3. Application Sharing: Allows users to run software applications on a remote server while accessing and
controlling them from their local devices.

4. Device Sharing: Enables multiple users to share access to devices like scanners, cameras, and external
storage.
