Module 2 (LAB)

This document provides an overview of Module 2 of the MECH610/Pneumatics & Electro-Pneumatics course. The module focuses on standard components in pneumatic systems and developing pneumatic diagrams. Specifically, it will cover the structure and signal flow of pneumatic systems, standard components, symbols, and circuit design layout. It includes examples of control circuits for single-acting and double-acting cylinders, with labeled diagrams and instructions to simulate the circuits using software. The learning outcomes are for students to use pneumatic hardware and software to develop complex mechatronic circuits, communicate effectively, and lead projects with decision making responsibilities.

MECH610/PNEUMATICS & ELECTRO-PNEUMATICS

Module 2 (LAB) – Standard Components in Pneumatics

Methods for the development Pneumatic Diagram

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this module, students are expected to:
C4. Use pneumatic and/or electro-pneumatic hardware and software to develop
complex mechatronic circuitry.
C7. Communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
C8. Lead multiple groups and projects with decision making responsibilities.

Specifically,
 Structure and Signal Flow of Pneumatic Systems
 Standard components in pneumatics
 Symbols and Component descriptions
 Pneumatic Circuit Design Layout

Introduction
Pneumatic systems consist of an interconnection of different groups of elements.

Figure1. Pneumatic Signal Flow

The pneumatic control system has an input section that controls the compressed air and
directs actuation of the output elements. The primary devices in a pneumatic system
are:
 Energy Supply
 Input elements (sensors)
 Processing elements (processors)
 Control Elements
 Power components (actuators)

Control Circuit for the Single-acting Cylinder

Problem:
The piston rod of a single-acting cylinder that is initially retracted is to extend when a
pushbutton is pressed. When the pushbutton is released, the piston is to automatically
return to the initial position.
Solution:

Control Circuit for the Double-acting Cylinder
Problem:
The piston rod of a double-acting cylinder is to advance when a push button is operated
and to return to the initial position when the push button is released. The double acting

cylinder can carry out work in both directions of motion, due to the full air supply
pressure being available for extension and retraction.

Solution:

Task:
Draw the two pneumatic circuits above and label each device. Download FLUIDSIM and
simulate using FLUIDSIM or pneumatic education modules.
