McMaster PHYSICS 1D03 – Module 0 – Lecture 1
Labs
• There are four (4) lab experiments. Details about how
labs work will be posted on Avenue.
• The schedules for labs/tutorials will be posted on Avenue.
Lab/Tutorials start on Monday, September 18, 2023.
• Before each lab, read the required section of the lab
manual posted on Avenue and watch the “how-to”
videos. Answer pre-lab questions (electronically or on
paper) and show your answers to the TA as you enter the
lab room.
• If you’re repeating the course, you must repeat the labs
since there is no Lab exemption.

19
McMaster PHYSICS 1D03 – Module 0 – Lecture 1
Labs
• Check the schedule for your lab/tutorial section.
• Before each lab, read the required section in the lab manual.
• There is a pre-lab assignment (in the lab manual) to be completed and shown to
the TA just before each lab. This encourages you to prepare properly.
• In the lab, students work in pairs. The report is completed during the lab period
and uploaded to CrowdMark before leaving (one report per pair).
• The lab assessments on CrowdMark are timed such that from the moment you
click on them, you only have 4 hours to submit the lab report. So DO NOT click
on the lab assessments on CrowdMark until you are in the lab and ready to start
or your timer will run out before you have the chance to finish the lab.
• Bringing any completed report into the lab room (including on your phone) is
academic dishonesty.
• You must complete all labs. A make-up week is provided at the end of term.
• If you’re repeating the course, there is no lab exemption!

McMaster PHYSICS 1D03 – Module 0 – Lecture 1 20

Labs
• You will be expected to estimate the uncertainty associated
with your measurements.
• Read the introductory materials on uncertainties and graphs.
• Note: the first homework (LONCAPA) will include calculating
uncertainties

McMaster PHYSICS 1D03 – Module 0 – Lecture 1
Tutorials
• There are five (5) tutorials
• Tutorials alternate with labs
– Labs/Tutorials start on Monday Sept. 18, 2023.
• Each tutorial will be led by a teaching assistant (TA).
• In the tutorials you will learn to discuss physics problems, and
to work effectively individually or in groups of 4 or 5.
• The tutorial has two main parts:
1) Quiz 15 minutes: You will write out and hand in a
complete solution to a problem chosen from LON-
CAPA, working individually.
2) Practice solving physics problems: working in groups
with help from a teaching assistant (TA)
22
McMaster PHYSICS 1D03 – Module 0 – Lecture 1
CrowdMark
• Written work including tutorial questions and quizzes will be
submitted for grading via the CrowdMark platform
• Login through Avenue to Learn at the following link:
https://app.crowdmark.com/sign-in/mcmaster
• Tutorial quiz assessments on CrowdMark are timed such that from the
moment you click on them, you only have 10 minutes to upload and
submit your answer. So DO NOT click on the tutorial assessments on
CrowdMark until you are in the tutorial and ready to submit your
answer or your timer will run out before you have the chance to do so.
• When an assignment is posted, you will receive an email in your
McMaster email account.
• CrowdMark accepts only PDF, JPG and PNG file formats.

There are practice

assignments for BONUS
marks. Start: Sept 07, Due:
Sept 14.
McMaster PHYSICS 1D03 – Module 0 – Lecture 1 23
Homework: Using LON-CAPA
• There will be a LON-CAPA assignment each week.
Answers are entered into the computer.
– The LON-CAPA system tells you immediately whether the
answer is correct and allows you to try again if it is not.
– You can get access to LON-CAPA directly through Avenue
• You can log on/off and keep working on an
assignment as often as you like until each deadline.
• The LON-CAPA assignments are an essential part of
understanding the material.
– You should expect to spend a significant amount of time on
these; the biggest reward will come on the tests and exam.
• LON-CAPA assignments are worth 6% of your grade
• * Tutorial quizzes will be based on the LON-CAPA problems 24
McMaster PHYSICS 1D03 – Module 0 – Lecture 1
Missed Work Forms (MSAF)
For missed tutorials and midterm tests:
• Direct forms to Dr. Maryam Tabeshian
<[email protected]>
• When you use the MSAF form, the weight of the missed
item is always added to the final examination.
• The mark on Avenue will eventually show up as " –2" if
the form is received, but this may take up to a week as
the forms need to be processed.
• E-mail Dr. Tabeshian and/or your instructor ONLY if your
mark does not show as " –2" by a week after you
submitted the form.
McMaster PHYSICS 1D03 – Module 0 – Lecture 1 25
Missed Work Forms (MSAF)
For missed Labs:
• Direct forms to Dr. Maryam Tabeshian <[email protected]>

• When you use the MSAF form for Lab, you are allowed to do the
make-up lab. If you do not do lab (or make-up lab) you will get
zero on the missed lab.

• E-mail Dr. Viktor Buntar ([email protected]), the lab

supervisor to make arrangements for the make-up lab.
