Rationale for Wisconsin Teacher Development and Licensure Standard Seven
For the Social Studies methods course, ED 352, our final assessment was to create a unit plan based on the following criteria: 1. Elements of original/creative design to engage learners 2. Performance Assessment includes some element of student choice 3. Grade-level/developmental-level content and activities 4. Integration of non-fiction or historical fiction 5. Current event component 6. Web quest used to engage learners and offer easy access to information My group, which consisted of me, Andrea Derrick, and Katie Miszewski, focused on civil rights. My uncle, James E. Groppi, was a prominent leader in Milwaukee during the 1960s, and was focused on open housing within Milwaukee and the Civil Rights Movement. We focused our unit on Social Studies and English Language Arts, and offer options to integrate Mathematics and Science. Within the English Language Arts lessons, the students are selecting books that will be one of the resources for the culminating final project. We connected the unit to current events, which at the time could be related to struggles in Egypt and Libya, and closer to home with political struggles pertaining to union rights. The final project allows students to select their performance type: a speech with visual aids, an original book with illustrations and words, or a work of art with a written accompaniment. This unit plan is an example of Wisconsin Standard for Teacher Development and Licensure seven. We considered multiple factors when planning these lessons including the content we would cover, our potential students, resources within the community and goals that we would have for our classrooms. We planned lessons that would engage diverse learners. The text books were of varying difficulty. The summative performance assessment allowed for different forms of expressions. The current event topics for discussion were to be based around what news the students were able to discover and explore. An element of the Alverno School of Education Outcome of the Major of diagnosis is the ability to base assessment processes based on the objectives of the lesson. We also designed rubrics for the assessments, giving the students the criteria of a successful project. Because not all students showcase their understandings in the same way, we chose to have options available to the students are various points in the unit including the summative performance assessment. This project demonstrates my philosophy of being a child-centered educator with respect to the choices that the students are able to make. Students are asked to rank the selected books within their

English Language Arts class. Students also select the format of the final project based on their interests and skills. This unit also demonstrates a constructivist philosophy to education. In the opening lesson, we utilize a webquest to activate prior knowledge and get the students interested in learning more about civil rights than they have been exposed to in the past.
