Prototype Lesson Plan in Math 7 Q2 Week8 Day 3

This lesson plan is for a 7th grade mathematics class on solving linear equations and inequalities involving absolute value. Students will review absolute value concepts and work through examples of solving absolute value equations and inequalities algebraically and graphically. The lesson includes sample problems for students to practice solving absolute value equations and inequalities on their own. The objective is for students to be able to solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable involving absolute value using algebraic methods and graphing.

RESOURCES SLM, Quarter 2, Module 8
PROCEDURE : A. Preparation
Routinary activities
 Prayer
 Checking of the attendance
B. Motivation
Present the following symbols on the board and ask the students to give
their observation.
|-4 | = 4
|-14 + 3 | = 11
|21 + (-8)| = 13
C. Presentation
Present these questions to the class.
1. Who can define absolute value?
2. What does it mean linear equation and inequality involving absolute
value?
A. Discussion/Abstraction
The absolute value of a number x (denoted by |x|) is the distance of the
number from zero on the number line. The absolute value of zero is zero.
The absolute value of a positive number is itself. The absolute value of a
negative number is its positive counterpart. Many absolute value equations
are not easy to solve by guess-and-check method. An easier way maybe to
use is the procedure in the given example.

Example: Solve |3 a−4|-11 = 15

Step 1: Let the expression on
one side of the equation |3 a−4|-11+ 11 = 15 + 11 (APE)
consist only of a single |3 a−4| = 26
absolute value expression.
Step 2: Is the number on the No, it is a positive number, 26, so proceed
other side of the equation to step 3.
negative?
Step 3: To satisfy the
equation, the expression
inside the absolute value can
3a – 4 = 26 3a – 4 = -26
either be +26 or -26. These
correspond to two
equations.
Step 4: Solve both 3a – 4+4 = -26 +4
3a – 4 +4 = 26 + 4
equations.
(APE)
(MPE)
()
1
3
3a = 30
1
3 () ( 13 )3a = -22( 13 )
−22
a = 10 a=
3
Check: If a = 10, then |3 a−4|-11 = |3 ( 10 ) −4|−11
=|30−4|−11
= |26| -11
= 26 – 11
= 15 True.

Also, if a =
−22

, then
|( ) |
3
−22
3
−4 -11 = |(−22 )−4|−11

=|−26|−11
= 26-11
= 15 True.
Example 2: Solve |5 x +4| + 12 = 4.
Step 1: Let the expression
on one side of the |5 x +4| + 12 = 4
equation consist only of a |5 x +4| + 12 + (-12) = 4 (-12) (APE)
single absolute value |5 x +4| = - 8
expression.
Step 2: Is the number on Yes, it is a negative number. There is no
the other side of the solution because |5 x +4| can never be
equation negative? negative, no matter what we substitute for
x.
Example: Solve |2 x+ 3|>13
Step 1: This is 2 x+3 <−13 2 x+3 >13
a greater than
absolute value
inequality. Set
up two
separate
inequalities
Step 2: Solve 2 x+3−3<−13−3 (API) 2 x+3−3>13−3 (API)
the two
inequalities.
( 12 ) 2 x ←16( 12 ) (MPI) ( 12 ) 2 x >10( 12 ) (MPI)

x <−8 x >5

E. Exercises
Board Work:
Solve the following linear equation and inequality involving absolute value.
1. |x – 11| < 9
2. |x| + 12 = 4
3. |6b| -12 ≥ 6

F.Generalization
What do we need to consider in solving linear equations and inequalities
involving absolute value?
G. Application

H. Evaluation
Directions: Solve and find the solution set of the following linear equations
and inequalities algebraically.

1. |n| – 3 = 39
2. |3 x +1| = 22
3. |1−2 x|<5
4. |b−7|<6

I. Agreement/Assignment
Read in advance the concept notes in Mathematics - Quarter 2, Module8,
Lesson 3 of the SLM.
