COMPETENCY & The learner finds the solution of linear equation or inequality in one
OBJECTIVES variable. (M7AL-IIi-1)
:
Find the solution of linear inequality involving one variable by
algebraic procedure
CONTENT : Solution of Linear Inequality in One Variable
LEARNING
:
RESOURCES SLM, Quarter 2, Module 7
PROCEDURE : A. Preparation
Routinary activities
Prayer
Checking of the attendance
B. Motivation
Present this problem and allow the students to analyze and give how they
would answer this.
Problem: In the first four papers each of 100 marks, John got 95, 72, 73, 83
marks. If he wants an average of greater than or equal to 75 marks, find the
range of marks he should score in the fifth paper.
C. Presentation
1. What mathematical sentence will represent the given situation?
2. What mathematical symbol is to be used to present the illustration?
3. How can we differentiate a linear equation from an inequality?
A. Discussion/Abstraction
Linear inequalities are inequalities that involve at least one linear
algebraic expression, that is, a polynomial of degree 1 is compared with
another algebraic expression of degree less than or equal to 1.
The properties of inequalities may be used also to find the solution
set of linear inequalities in the following examples:
Example 1. b + 14 ≥ 17
b + 14 - 14 ≥ 17 - 14
b ≥3
This statement means that the solution set contains the number 3
and all numbers greater than 3. This solution set can be written using set
notation as{ b ∕ b ≥ 3 } which is read” The set of all numbers x such that x is
greater than or equal to 3”.
Example 2. 2r – 32 ¿ 4r + 12 Given
2r – 32 ¿ 4r + 12
2r – 32 + 32 ¿ 4r + 12 + 32 API( added 32 to both sides)
2r – 4r ¿ 4r - 4r + 44 API( added -4r to both sides)
2r – 4r ¿ 44
– 2r ¿ 44
(– 2r) 1 ¿ (44) 1 MPI (Multiplied the reciprocal of the
−1
-2 -2 numerical coefficient of r which is to
2
both sides)
r ¿ -22 Note: the inequality symbol reverses when
both sides are multiplied by a negative number.
E. Exercises
Oral Drills:
Use the properties of equality to solve the following equations.
1. x – 11 < 9
2. x + 12 > 4
3. 6b -12 ≥ 6
4. 1-2x ≤ 5
F.Generalization
1. What are the properties of inequality commonly used in solving the
linear inequalities?
2. What are the steps in solving for the value of the variable?
G. Application
Solve the following problem by providing the correct inequality and
solving for the value of the variable(use variable x)
H. Evaluation
Directions: Use the properties of equality and inequality to solve the
following. Show all your solutions on your paper.
5. x + 11 ≥ 9
6. x - 12 ≤ 4
7. 9x < 27
2
8. - x>8
