Taking and Leaving a telephone call

Telephone call is a communication or conversation by telephone. There are a number of phrases


and idioms that are only used when telephoning.

A. Making a Telephone Call

This is the expressions used when we are making a call

 Hello, my name is Fernando, I would like to speak to Mr. Ricardo please


 Hello, I’m Alex from Spears Advertising Company, May I speak to Mrs. Windi

B. Answering a Telephone Call

This the expression to answering a phone call

 Good afternoon, Luke’s Cafe, can I help you


 Good Morning, Nelson Enterprise, my name is Vanesa, what can I do for you?

C. Telling that The Person is Not Available

 I’m sorry, Mr. Ricardo is not here at the moment


 I’m sorry, Mr. Ricardo is in a meeting right now

D. Putting Someone Through

 I’ll put you through to… (put through – phrasal verb =’connect’)
 Can you hold the line?
 Can you hold on a moment?

E. Leaving Message

 Can I leave message?


 I want to leave a message if it is possible
 Can you tell him/her I called?

F. Taking a Message

 Can I take a message?


 Would you like to leave a message?
 Can I give him/her a message?
 I’ll tell Mr. Jones that you called.
 I’ make sure Mr. Jones rings you as soon as possible.
 At what number can you be reached?
 Could (Can, May) I take a message?
 Could (Can, May) I tell him who is calling?

G. Asking Someone to Call Back

 Thank you for waiting. I’m afraid Mr. Jones is not in at the moment.
