INTRODUCTION TO OSCILLOSCOPE:
 OBJECTIVES:
• The objective of this laboratory exercise was to introduce and familiarize ourselves with the
use of an oscilloscope.
• To gain hands-on experience with oscilloscope operation.
• To understand input scaling, coupling, and triggering settings.
• To measure and analyze AC and DC signals across a circuit.
• To examine the various waveforms generated by a function generator.
 INTRODUCTION:
An oscilloscope, often referred to as "oscillo," is a critical tool for engineers and scientists working with
electronic circuits and signal analysis. It allows us to visualize and measure time-varying voltage signals,
making it invaluable for tasks such as waveform analysis, frequency measurement, and troubleshooting
electronic circuits. Some qualities of oscilloscope are as fallows;

• It is a very fast X-Y signal plotter.

• It displays an input signal against a function of time or any other signal.
• It is usually used to display, find and analyze frequency, time period, wavelength, shapeof
the signal and many other quantities.
• It also displays more than one signals on different channels for comparison.
 MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT:
1. Oscilloscope
2. Function generator
3. BNC cables
4. Probe
5. Power Supplies (AC and DC Both)

 BASIC PROCEDURE:

 Power on the Oscilloscope: Ensure the oscilloscope is connected to a stable power source and
turn it on.
 Probe Setup: Connect the probe to Channel 1 of the oscilloscope. Ensure that the probe is set
to the correct attenuation setting.
 Connect the Function Generator: Connect the function generator to the oscilloscope using a
BNC cable. Verify that the function generator's output signal is set to a known waveform (e.g.,
sine wave).
 Adjust the Controls: Adjust the vertical and horizontal position controls to center the
waveform on the screen. Adjust the voltage scale and time scale settings to obtain a clear and
visible waveform.
 Power Off: After completing the measurements, power off the oscilloscope and other
equipment.

 WORKING PROCEDURE:
• Connect the oscilloscope to the signal input.
• Activate the desired channel for observation and ground it.
• Adjust axis coordinates, time per division, and voltage per division.
• Set the channel to AC or DC coupling.
• Measure voltage peak-peak, amplitude, and frequency.
• Replace the power supply with the function generator and observe different waveforms.
• Determine voltage values using the oscilloscope and compare them with theoretical values.
• Experiment with the oscilloscope's capability to display waveforms and DC components.

 FUNCTION GENERATOR:
A function generator is usually a piece of electronic test equipment used to generate different
types of electrical waveforms over a wide range of frequencies.

• It generates sinusoidal (sine), square, triangle and saw tooth waveforms.

• These are used in the development, testing and repairing of electronic equipment.
• A function generator may be able to vary the characteristics of the waveforms, changing the
length of the pulse, i.e. edges of triangular or saw tooth waveforms.
• A typical function generator works on lower frequencies.

Figure 2: Function Generator

 SINE WAVE:
A function generator is normally a sine wave generator. This is the standard waveform
that oscillates between two levels with a standard sinusoidal shape.
 SQUARE WAVE:
Another waveform that can be produced by function generator is the square wave. It
consists of a signal moving directly between high and low levels.

 TRIANGULAR WAVE:
Another type of waveform that can be produced by a signal generator is
Triangular waveform. This waveform linearly moves between a high and low point.

 SAW TOOTH WAVE:

Another waveform that functions generator can produce is known as saw
tooth waveform. This is a triangular waveform, but with the rise edge of the waveform faster or slower
than the fall, making a form of shape similar to a saw tooth.

 PULSE:
Function generator can also produce pulses.
EXPERIMENT:

 APPARATUS:
Oscilloscope wave device, bread board, resistors, connecting wires, crocodile wire, 5V electric Supply.
 STATEMENT:
The statement of this lab is to measure the current, and see the current in the form of waves.
Procedure:
• Connect the circuit according to the given circuit.
• Connect the oscilloscope meter with resistors in series, and also with source,
• Initially connect the circuit with the DC source, a little variation will be observed in the
oscilloscope meter.
•Later connect the circuit with the AC source, then we can observe the high efficiency waves in
the oscilloscope meter.

 CONCLUSION:
This laboratory exercise served as a valuable introduction to oscilloscopes, an
indispensable tool in electronics and signal analysis. We learned how to operate the oscilloscope, measure
voltage, frequency, and time, and obtained practical experience in using this instrument for future
experiments and projects.
