2. Values - Values are the person’s moral conviction or standards of conduct, one’s assessment of what
matters in life. It motivates a person toward certain decisions, behavior, and goals. Values in life may
help define a person.
3. Skills - Skill is our capacity to perform something well. Also known as “expertise.” Assessing the skills
that one possess and knows that they are good at will measure their abilities and capabilities. This will
also determine which skills one needs to improve or develop to match with the career choice.
4. Personality Preferences and Interpersonal Needs - Personality preference is also called psychological
preference. When you're utilizing your thoughts or focusing your attention, it's what you want.
Inclusion, control, and love are the three primary interpersonal demands. Understanding this two
allows the person to have a clear understanding of the decisions that people make.
5. Financial Capability - This refers to the knowledge, attitudes, abilities, and behaviors regarding
managing their resources, and understanding, selecting, and using financial services that meet their
requirements are all part of this category. Deciding on a course to take in college may entail a big cut
on the family’s budget.
ASSISTANCE
According to Beverly Baskin, career counselors may assist in matching the innate skills and abilities of an
individual making a long-term or even a short-term goal in his career.
In matching interests with careers, counselors may use career/interest inventories like the Self-Directed
Search by Dr. John Holland, a noted Psychologist, and Career Theorist.
According to Dr. Holland, people can be classified into six (6) different groups or personality types (RIASEC)
Realistic
- Likes to work with animals, tools, or machines;
- Values practical things you can see, touch, and use like plants and animals, tools, equipment, or
machines; and
- Practical, mechanical, and realistic.
Investigative
- Likes to study and solve math or science problems;
- Values science; and
- Precise, scientific, and Intellectual.
Artistic
- Likes to do creative activities like art, drama, crafts, dance, music, or creative writing;
- Values the creative arts -- like drama, music, art, or the works of creative writers; and
- Expressive, original, and independent.
Social
- Likes to do things to help people like teaching, nursing, or giving first aid, providing information;
- Values helping people and solving social problems; and
- Helpful, friendly, and trustworthy.
Enterprising
- Likes to lead and persuade people, and to sell things, and ideas;
- Values success in politics, leadership, or business; and
- Energetic, ambitious, and friendly.
Conventional
- Likes to work with numbers, records, or machines in a set, and orderly way;
- Values success in business; and
- Orderly and good at following a set plan.
