3 Introduction to eCommission Application
3.1 eCommission SmartX Controllers Mobile Application Overview

3.1 eCommission SmartX Controllers Mobile

Application Overview
The eCommission SmartX Controllers mobile application allows you to use a
mobile device to perform commissioning, flow balance, and checkout
operations on SmartX IP controllers. SmartX IP controllers include MP and RP
Series controllers and IP-IO devices. The eCommission application is available
for Android and iOS (Apple) phones and tablets, as well as devices using
Microsoft Windows 10. The eCommission app can connect to a single SmartX IP
controller or to a network of SmartX IP controllers on the local network.

3.1.1 User Roles and Functions

The eCommission application provides a portable, simplified user interface to
access SmartX IP controllers without the need to use a dedicated workstation or
portable computer. The eCommission app is activated for one of three roles:
• Technician: Commissions and maintains the configuration of a building
system containing SmartX IP controllers
• Electrician: Physically installs and wires the devices in a system containing
SmartX IP controllers
• Flow Balancer: Flow balances a VAV unit controlled by a SmartX MP-V
controller
Each of these roles is assigned permissions appropriate to the user's unique
functions and responsibilities. The following tables summarize the association
between the user roles and these major and additional functions.

Major functions
• Browse objects
objects: Once a SmartX IP controller is installed and checked out,
you can use the Browse Objects function of the eCommission SmartX
Controllers mobile application to view and edit the objects within a
controller. For more information, see section 12.6 “Browsing and Modifying

controller, you can perform I/O checkout to verify that the wiring was done
correctly and that the physical inputs and outputs are working properly. The
I/O checkout status of each input and output can be found in the Inputs and
Outputs view. In the Device List view, the checkout statuses of all the inputs
and outputs in a SmartX IP Controller device are aggregated and displayed
as the Checkout status of the controller. As you are performing I/O
checkout, two files are generated in the background, within the SmartX IP
Controller device. An I/O checkout report details the results of the checkout,
and a commissioning log file records the steps that were performed. At the
completion of checkout these files can be viewed in WorkStation. For more
information, see section 10.3 “Performing I/O Checkout” on page 91.

iOS (Apple) DHCP, static

Windows 10 DHCP, static, link-local addressing

NOTICE
If a network device cannot find a DHCP server, the device performs an
autoconfiguration and assigns itself a link-local IP address.
For more information, see section 5.5 “Connecting to Single SmartX IP
Controller by Wire” on page 47.
There are a total of 65,023 usable IP addresses, ranging from 169.254.1.0 to

For more information, see the SmartX IP Controller Commissioning Scenarios
topic on WebHelp.

5.1.2 Network Interface Selection

To use the eCommission application on a mobile device that has more than one
network interface, you must select the interface you will use. To do this, first
determine the IP addresses that are available for your mobile device. You may
find the IP address assigned to the selected interface by viewing the device
settings. You then select the interface with the correct IP address.

5.1.3 BBMD Implementation

To use the eCommission application when you are connected remotely to the
controller network, the application can register as a foreign device to a BBMD.
To configure the application to register to a BBMD, type the IP address of the
BBMD in BBMD address and then select ConnectConnect.
When an IP address is present in BBMD address
address, the application attempts to
register with a BBMD at that address. If the BBMD address field is empty, the
application connects to the local network.

37
5 Connectivity at the Job Site
5.1 IP Acquisition and Connectivity

To connect the eCommission application remotely, you must have at least one
BBMD on the subnet that you are connecting to. To access the entire remote
BACnet internetwork, you must have a networked set of BBMDs. In addition to
the BBMD you must ensure that the local network that the mobile device is a part
of is compatible with the remote network. Typically this requires that you have
VPN access to the remote network.
This document is not intended to instruct you how to set up a BBMD for use with
the eCommission application. For further help with implementing BBMD with the
eCommission application, consult with the system administrator.

38
5 Connectivity at the Job Site
5.2 Connecting and Acquiring a Static IP Address

5.2 Connecting and Acquiring a Static IP

Address
You connect to the network and acquire an IP address so that you can
communicate with the devices on that network. Most network connections used
with the eCommission SmartX Controller mobile application assign an IP
address to your mobile device using DHCP, which is a type of automatic
addressing. However, certain Ethernet or WiFi networks may require you to use
a static IP address. Consult with the network administrator to determine if a static
IP address is required.
Before setting a static IP address, you must know the following information:
• IP address
• Gateway
• Subnet mask (or network prefix length)
• DNS 1 address (may be optional)
• DNS 2 address (optional)
If you do not have this information, consult with the network administrator.
For more information, see section 5.3 “Connection and Architecture Options” on
page 41.

5.3 Connection and Architecture Options

5.3 Connection and Architecture Options

You can choose from several different options to connect the eCommission
SmartX Controllers mobile application to one or more SmartX IP controllers.

5.3.1 Connect by Wire

You can use a CAT5e or CAT6 Ethernet cable to connect a Windows laptop
computer running the eCommission SmartX Controllers mobile application to
one or more SmartX IP controllers, using either of two methods:
• A direct connection to a free Ethernet port on a controller
• A connection to an Ethernet switch to which one or more controllers are also
connected

NOTICE
When connecting the eCommission application laptop computer to one or
more SmartX IP controllers by wire, you must use one of three methods of IP
addressing:
• Include a DHCP server to assign dynamic addresses to the controllers.
• Where a DHCP server is not included, use AutoIP to assign dynamic
addresses to the controllers.
• Where a DHCP server is not included, assign static addresses to the
controllers.

NOTICE
You do not need to know the IP address of the eCommission application
because it is not required for BACnet device discovery. For more information,
see the BACnet Device Discovery topic on WebHelp.

NOTICE
When the SmartX IP controller's Ethernet port 2 is not used by the controller
network, you can connect the eCommission application using that port without
disruption or additional hardware. When the SmartX IP controller's Ethernet
port 2 is used by the controller network (for example, in a daisy-chain or RSTP
network topology), you can add a temporary switch or hub to ensure that
connectivity is maintained while the eCommission application is in operation.
If Ethernet port 2 will not be used, you can disable this port for network security
purposes by configuring the Ethernet port 2 property on the Basic tab of the
SmartX IP controller. For more information, see the SmartX IP Controller
Settings Properties – Basic Tab topic on WebHelp.

5.3.2 Connect Wirelessly

Connect the eCommission application wirelessly to a SmartX IP controller
network, using a WiFi router or a wireless access point.

Wireless router
In many cases it is possible to set up a temporary WiFi network, using a WiFi
router that contains a DHCP server. The DHCP server provides IP addresses to
the SmartX IP controllers and the eCommission application. The router you
choose must have a configurable IP address range.

Figure: WiFi connection using a WiFi router

For more information, see section 5.7 “Connecting to Network of SmartX IP

Controllers through WiFi Router” on page 49.

Wireless access point

You can also connect the eCommission application to the controller network
using a wireless access point. The access point must be networked with a
DHCP server, which serves up the IP address. Typically the access point is
connected to Port 2 of the AS-P, which is configured for dual IP.

8.5 Creating a Common Device Settings

File
You create a Common Device Settings file so that you can more efficiently
manage the device settings for multiple controllers. Once a Common Device
Settings file is created, you can apply the file to another controller, or a group of
controllers. You can also change the file after you have uploaded it to a group of
devices to change the device settings later.

To create a new common device settings file

1. In the Device List page, select one or more devices.
2. In the Common Device Settings page, configure the following settings:

11.1 Flow Balance Overview

The Flow Balance function of the eCommission SmartX Controllers mobile
application is used to air balance terminal boxes controlled by MP-V controllers.
This function automates most of the air balance procedure but it also allows you
to manually check out the flow balance by driving the damper to a specified
position, a flow setpoint, or a flow value.
Flow balancing, also known as air balancing, is the process you use to calibrate
an installed VAV terminal unit so that the airflow indicated by the VAV controller
is accurate, relative to the true airflow delivered by the VAV terminal unit.
After the Electrician installs, wires, and powers the MP-V, the controller
automatically calibrates the damper stroke. Upon start-up, the MP-V will
automatically perform a damper stroke angle calibration where the damper
rotates to each mechanical end stop. After the MP-V has completed this
process, it is ready to be accessed from the eCommission application to
perform flow balancing.
When you select an MP-V from the eCommission application, a Variable Air
Volume Data object is automatically created in the controller. This object has
values that read the Airflow Sensor terminal and values that configure the
Damper Control 1 of the MP-V. The MP-V also contains logic to assist in the flow
balancing calibration.

NOTICE
The eCommission application supports flow balancing for MP-Vs with the data
object Variable Air Volume only. The eCommission application does not
support flow balancing for MP-Vs with custom balancing programs.

11.1.1 Flow Balance Menu

Setpoints
You configure the MP-V controller setpoints to set up the parameters by which
the controller is flow balanced. These setpoints include the maximum flow
setpoint, selected by default, and the intermediate and minimum flow setpoints,
which are optional.

NOTICE
In the Air Balancing Setpoints view, the Intermediate flow and Minimum flow
setpoint check boxes are cleared by default. However, it is recommended that
you include either or both these setpoints for flow balancing, in addition to the
Maximum flow setpoint. Doing so allows you to achieve greater flow accuracy
across the operating flow range of the VAV unit.

Verify rotation
You can manually verify the direction of damper rotation to determine whether
the actuator rotates clockwise or counterclockwise to open.

Manual checkout
After completing the automated flow balancing process, you can use manual

controllers.

Balance report
The eCommission application provides the user with a means to generate a flow
balance report that documents several values, including: the box capacity at 1
inch H20 (249 Pa), the box measured flow and the hood measured flow for each
setpoint used during balancing, actuator stroke and rotation, flow balance time
and date, and any comments. Using the eCommission application, the user can
create, append, and delete flow balance reports. Flow balance reports are
stored on the eCommission application mobile device and can be retrieved and
shared using the file and e-mail applications of that mobile device.

11 Flow Balancing
11.4 Flow Balancing at Maximum, Intermediate, or Minimum Flow Setpoint

11.4 Flow Balancing at Maximum,

Intermediate, or Minimum Flow Setpoint
Using the eCommission SmartX Controllers mobile application, you flow balance
a VAV unit at each designated setpoint to achieve the desired air flow.
One, two, or three flow setpoints can be selected for flow balancing. The
maximum flow setpoint is selected by default. In addition, you can also select
the intermediate flow setpoint or the minimum flow setpoint, or both. The VAV
unit is automatically flow balanced at the chosen setpoints, in sequence, using
the same process at each setpoint.

For more information, see section 11.2 “Flow Balancer Workflow” on page 97.

To flow balance at the maximum, intermediate, or minimum

flow setpoint
1. When the flow balance process begins, the eCommission application
automatically checks for correct damper rotation. If a message is
displayed, saying that the direction of rotation is not correct, choose to
either allow the application to automatically correct the direction of rotation
or dismiss the message.

2. In the Balance at Maximum Flow view, select the information icon to

expand the Current Status pane. Flow information related to the VAV unit is
displayed.

NOTICE
During flow balancing at maximum flow, the MP-V controller's actuator
rotates the damper, which is driven until a stable flow is produced at the
flow setpoint.

3. Monitor Box measured flow until its value reaches the setpoint and remains
within tolerance for 10 seconds, signifying that the flow has stabilized.

NOTICE
In the Air Balancing Setpoints view, the Flow tolerance value defines
how close the measured box flow must be to the associated setpoint
before the eCommission application automatically advances, so that the
flow balancer can measure and record diffuser flow values.

4. On the terminal box being balanced, position a flow hood at one of the
outlet diffusers and then record the flow. Repeat this for any additional
outlet diffusers on the terminal box.

5. Select the grayed portion of the window to open the Balance at Maximum
view.
6. In the Diffuser 1 flow box, type the measured flow value recorded in the
previous step.
7. In the Diffuser 2 flow box, type the next measured flow value.
8. Continue typing measured flow values for any additional outlet diffusers.

NOTICE
Hood measured flow is calculated by the sum of the Diffuser values. For
example, if you have two diffusers, the hood measured flow will be the
sum of Diffuser1 and Diffuser2 measurements. The Hood Measured Flow
should be similar to the Box Measured Flow value.

9. In the Comment field, enter a comment to add to the Air Balancing Report.
10. Select Next
Next. After completing flow balance at the maximum flow setpoint,
the eCommission application automatically proceeds to flow balancing at
the intermediate and minimum flow setpoints, if selected.
The VAV unit is flow balanced at the selected setpoints. Now you are ready to
perform manual checkout.
