AMIEL, C4leMaKe = '7B MODULE 6. Latitude, Longitude and Time Zones Subject: GEC104 Mathomatics in the Modern World Module 6 (3 hrs.) on Title: Latitude, Longitude and Time Zones Lesson Objectives: 1, To determine tho global address of different cities using latitude and longitude. 2. To use time zones to dotermine the difference between the time from one place to another. 3. Give the actual time in different time zones given the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or the time In another country. Overview This lesson discusses the concepts of global address using latitude and longitude, and time zones in different parts of the globe. It will enable the learner to determine the global address of different locations on earth and relate this knovdedge to the process of determining time in those places. This will lead to an understanding of the differences between the time in countries belonging to different time zones. Activity: Watch a video on Latitude and Longitude by clicking the link below. hips Jiwww youlube.comwatechay Analysis: Questions about the Video 1. What do you call the imaginary lines around the earth that run parallel to the equator? What is the significance of these lines? 2. What do you call the imaginary lines around the earth that pass through the North and South Poles? What is the significance of these lines? Abstraction: Lesson Proper Latitude and Longitude: Your Global Address Every location on earth has a global address. Because the address is in numbers, people can communicate about location no matter what language they might speak. A global address is given as two numbers called coordinates. The two numbers are a location's latitude number and its longitude number ("LaULong"). For example, a place with a global address of (30° N 120° E) is located 30° North of the equator and 120° East of the Prime Meridian. € @ MODULE 6. Latitude, Longitude and Time Zones meridian Microsoft Mustration Credit: inois State University Using Lat/Long is different from using a street address. Instead of having a specific stroet address, LaVLong works with a numbered grid system, like what you see when you look at graph paper. It has horizontal lines and vertical lines that intersect. A location can be mapped or found on a grid system simply by giving two numbers which are the location's horizontal and vertical coordinates. Grid Mapping a Globe Latitude and Longitude lines are a grid map system too. But instead of being straight lines on a flat surface, Lat/Long lines encircle the Earth, either as horizontal circles or vertical half circles. Horizontal mapping lines on Earth are lines of latitude. They are known as “parallels” of latitude, because they run parallel to the equator. One simple way to visualize this might be to think about having imaginary horizontal "hula hoops" around the earth, with the biggest hoop around the equator, and then progressively smaller ones stacked above and below It to reach the North and South Poles. Latitude lines are a numerical way to measure how far north or south of the equator a place is located. The equator is the starting point for measuring latitude—that's why it's marked as O degrees latitude. The number of latitude degrees will be larger the further away from the equator the place is located, all the way up to 90 degrees latitude at the poles. Latitude locations are given as ___ degrees North or __ degrees South. Vertical mapping lines on Earth are lines of longitude, known as “meridians”. One simplo way to visualize this might be to think about having hula hoops cut in half, vertically SAMO, CHUMIKE M18 MODULE 6. This Prime Meridian line runs vertically, north and ‘south, right over the British Royal Observatory in |. from the North Pole to the South Pole. As the vertical starting point for longitude, the Prime Meridian Is numbered 0 degrees longitude. To measure longitude east or west of the Prime Meridian, there are 180 vertical longitude lines east of the Prime Meridian and 180 vertical longitude lines wost of the Primo Meridian, 0 longitude locations are given as ___degroes east or __ dogroos wast, ‘The 180 degree line is a single vertical line called the | q and It Is directly opposite of the Prime Meridian. 90°N, geographic n Selected major latitudes and jorth pole longitudes on Earth's surface Latitudes € ‘aohw aokw 20hw 1 Equator Prime meridian Longltudes A geographic coordinate system is a two-dimensional reference system that locates points on the Earth's surface. The unit of measure Is usually decimal degrees. A point has two coordinate values: latitude and longitude. Latitude and longitude are measured in degrees. For example, the approximate global address of Manila,Philippines is (14.6°N, 121°E), while Beijing, China is (40°N, 1 16 °E). Application 1 ; Use the printed map of Asia below and list the approximate global address of 5 major cities a Latitude and Longitude Finder accessible at latlong.net to find in the map. You may use the exact global address of a city. Choose 5 Cities from this map. @® MODULE 6. Latitude, Longitude and Time Zones AUSTRALIA Time Zones Time zones are determined by longitudes that divide the globe into 24 parts corresponding to the 24 hours in a day. Every time zone spans 15° along the equator. Using time zones, you can recognize time differences from one place to another around the world. The earth is spherical and the time on a specific place is different from another place on the globe. Every 1° difference in longitude between two places means a 4 minute difference in time. That means every 15° longitudinal difference between two places means a 1 hour difference in time. Time zones follow a simple rule. If you calculate the time from one place to another place going East, time increases by 1 hour for every 15 degrees of difference in longitude. On the other hand, if you calculate time from one location to another going West, time decreases by 1 hour for every 15 minutes of difference in longitude. For example, if the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is 4 p.m., the time in the Philippines, which is 120° East is 8 hours ahead. The solution is given below. y CSMIEL, GU MIAKE 8 @ MODULE 6. Latitude, Longitude and Time Zones 120°+ 15° = 8, therefore add 8 hours to the GMT. It would be 12 midnight in the Philippines. On the other hand, the difference between the time in the Philippines (120°E) and New York (75°W) is computed below. Since the direction is Westward, we attach a negative sign to the degrees: -120° - 75° = -195 13 hours. Therefore, New York time is behind the Philippines by 13 hours. To get the actual time in New York, we subtract 13 hours from the actual time in the Philippines. Application 2. Give the time difference between the following countries A and B.
