Cable

Electrical cables are used to transmit electrical power and data. They consist of three main components: a conductor to carry current, insulation to isolate the conductor, and a protective sheath. Cables are classified based on their purpose and include ribbon, shielded, twisted pair, coaxial, single core, and multicore industrial cables. Each cable type has different applications such as networking, power transmission, or household wiring.

What is Electrical Cable?

The cable that is used for the transmission and distribution of electrical power is known as the electrical
power cable. It is used for the transmission of high voltages in places where overhead lines are
impractical to use.

The power cable is made of three main components, namely, conductor, dielectric, and sheath. The
conducting path for the current in the cable is provided by the conductor. The insulation or dielectric
withstands the service voltage and isolates the live conductor with other objects. The sheath does not
allow the moistures to enter and protects the cables from all external influences like chemical or
electrochemical attacks and fire.

Types of Electrical Cable

Types of Cables

Various types of cables are used everywhere for various applications. Not all cables perform the same
application. The function of a cable depends upon the type of cable. The electrical cables are made of
aluminum or copper wires protected by an insulating coating which can be made of synthetic polymers.

Cables are classified into 5 types depending upon their purpose as follows:

Ribbon Electric Cables

It consists of multiple insulated wires running parallel with one
another and is used for transmission of multiple data
simultaneously. For example, this is used to connect the CPU
with the motherboard and is generally used for the
interconnection of networking devices.

Shielded Cables
It consists of 1 or 2 insulated wires which are covered by
a woven braided shield or aluminium Mylar foil for better
signal transmission and removing irregularities in the
frequency of power and external interference in radio.
These cables transmit high voltage electric current and are
protected by a shield.
Twisted Pair Cables
It has two or more insulated copper wires which are twisted with each other and are colour-coded. These
types of wires are usually used in telephone cables and the resistance to external interference can be
measured by the number of wires.
2 types: STP- Shielded Twisted Pair
UTP- Unshielded Twisted Pair

Coaxial Cables
This consists of solid copper or steel conductor plated with copper
which is enclosed in the metallic braid and metallic tape. This is
entirely covered
with an insulated
protective outer
jacket. These types
of cables are used
for computer networking and audio-video networking.

Single Core cable

As the name suggests, a single core cable comes with a single conductor. Made of either copper or
aluminum, this cable is jacked in a single sheath only made of rubber, PVC or other materials. It is made
to be in solid or stranded types and possesses a thicker diameter. This cable is known for durability,
rigidity and excellent flexibility.

Use of Single Core Cable

 They are good for domestic requirements like household electrical appliances
 They are used inside the home for making circuit
 They are optimum for computers, gadgets, and control planets
 They supply power between machines or for treating communication

Multicore Industrial Cables

Also known as double core and Single core cable diagrams, multicore industrial cables are a bundle of
different wires to cater to the needs of different power supplies. They are designed in a way to absorb
high temperatures. Their outer sheath is made of PVC that enables these cables to prevent them from
heating as well as offer mechanical protection to the wires and cables.
Further multicore industrial cables are insulated with either rubber, PVC or other materials. They are
designed with more than one conductor in a single cable. Also, these cables are insulated separately
within a single cable.

Uses of Multicore Industrial Cables

 Multicore industrial cables meet the requirements of the industry

 They power heavy types of machinery
 They are excellent conductors of electricity
 They are ideal for audio engineering, television studios
 They are made to connect with different gadgets like speakers or cameras
 They provide better electricity transmission power
With the aforesaid information, it is clear that both the cables i.e. single core and multicore have their
own unique role to play. It is up to you to choose cables or wire depending on your requirements.

Fiber Optics Cable

There are these types of cables which transport optical data
signals from an attached light source to the receiving device.
We are pretty much aware of what is optical fibre and its
uses in a wide variety of applications.

VGA CABLE (Video Graphics Array)

A VGA cable is used primarily to link a computer to a display

device. One end of the VGA cable is attached to the port in the
graphics card on the computer motherboard, and the other to the
port in the display device.
RCA Connectors (Radio Corporation of America)
The RCA cable is named for the Radio Corporation of America, which first used it in the 1940s to
connect phonographs to amplifiers. It entered popular home use in the '50s and is still in use today. The
two most common types are composite video and component.

High Definition Multimedia Interface

HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is a
specification that combines video and audio into a single
digital interface for use with digital versatile disc (DVD)
players, digital television (DTV) players, set-top boxes, and
other audiovisual devices.

Video Balun
A Video Balun enables the transmission of video using unshielded
twisted pair wire instead of coaxial cable. The word "balun" comes
from combining the terms balanced and unbalanced. The function of
a balun is to transform an unbalanced signal into a balanced signal.
