TC 202

The document describes a complex engineering problem semester project for a Signals and Systems course. The project aims to design and simulate a signal generator circuit capable of generating square, sine, and triangular waves by adjusting the signal frequency and amplitude. Students will also design a frequency counter to display the signal frequency. The project maps to program learning outcomes for individual and teamwork and will be evaluated using a rubric assessing students' acknowledgement, practice, and valuing of teamwork, leadership, diversity, and inclusion. Groups of up to 3 students will submit a report on their design and simulation details, results, and conclusions.

Complex Engineering Problem

Second Year (Telecommunications Engineering) Batch 2022

Course Code: TC-202

Course Title: Signals and Systems
Semester: Fall 2023
Semester project in Signals and Systems is designed in a way to able students to solve the
complex engineering problem. Following characteristics of complex engineering problem are
targeted in this semester project.
1. Depth of knowledge Required
2. Range of conflicting Requirements
3. Depth of Analysis Required

Preamble:
In the field of electronics and communication, the role of a signal generator is of crucial
importance and it is an essential element of technology in the field of Telecommunication. A
signal generator is an electronic device capable of generating different types of signals, with
different values of frequencies and amplitudes, among other calibrating features. The signal
generator serves its purpose when testing, troubleshooting or designing an electronic circuit.
CEP Statement:
Design and Simulate a signal generator circuit capable of generating:
1. Square wave
2. Sine Wave
3. Triangular Wave
The signal generator design should include the capability to adjust signal frequency and
amplitude. Moreover, design a frequency counter capable of displaying frequency of the signal.
PLO, Domain and Taxonomy Level:
This activity is mapped to CLO 4 of the course and results in the attainment of PLO-9
(Individual and Team work), Affective Domain (Level 3).

Allowed Group Size: Maximum size: 3 students

Evaluation and Deliverable:
The group will design and simulate the schematic/block diagram on a simulation tool of their
choice and try to obtain the desired results through simulations. The design details and
simulation details along with results will be submitted in a report (besides demonstration), to the
course teacher. The report should be in the standard format including abstract, objectives,
background, system working/description and diagrams, simulation results and conclusions. The
report must essentially include:
1. A labeled system diagram mentioning function of each block in detail
2. All working equations and formulae must be clearly indicated and numbered
3. Indicate the circuit components in form of a table, captioned and numbered
4. All figures must be captioned with proper labeling and numbering
Evaluation will take place in the 10th week of semester teaching and the PLO-9, A3 rubric
(attached) will be used to evaluate the students’ progress.
