Exercise No. 2

This document contains 6 exercises involving calculating suitable diameters and dimensions for machine shafts given torque, power, stress limits, and other mechanical properties: 1. Calculate the diameter of a shaft transmitting 100 kW at 160 rpm such that maximum torque exceeds mean by 25%, with a shear stress limit of 70 MPa. 2. Find the diameter of a shaft transmitting 100 kW at 180 rpm with a 1 degree twist over 3m and 60 MPa shear stress limit. 3. Determine the external diameter of a hollow shaft transmitting 600 kW at 110 rpm with 20% greater maximum than mean torque, 63 MPa shear stress limit, and 1.4 degree twist over 3m. 4. Calculate the diameter

Torsional and bending stresses in Machine Parts
Prof. Dr, Saad F. Ahmed
1- A circular shaft is transmitting 100 kW at 160 rpm. Find a suitable diameter for the
shaft if the maximum torque transmitted exceeds the mean by 25%. Take max.
allowable shear stress as 70 MPa.
2- A shaft transmits 100 kW at 180 rpm. If the allowable shear stress in the material is
60 MPa. Find the suitable diameter for the shaft. The shaft is not to twist more than 1
(one degree) in a length of (3 m). Take mod. of rigidity, G = 80 × 103 N/mm2.
3- A hollow shaft is required to transmit 600 kW at 110 rpm, the max. torque is 20%
greater than the mean. The shear stress is not to exceed 63 N/mm2 and twist in a length
of (3 m) not to exceed 1.4 degrees. Find the external diameter of the shaft if the internal
diameter to the external diameter is (3/8). Take mod. of rigidity = 84 × 103 N/mm2
4- A shaft as shown in the drawing, exerts
forces 25 kN and 35 kN concentrated at
(C) and (D). Find the diameter of the
central portion of the shaft if the stress is
not to exceed 100 N/mm2.
5- An axle (1m) long is supported in bearings
at its ends and carries a flywheel weighing
30 kN at the center. If the stress (bending)
is not to exceed 60 N/mm2, find the
diameter of the shaft.
6-

A steel composite shaft ABCD consists of (3) portions with different cross-sections
and are connected in series. The total length of the shaft = 3500 mm. Portion AB is
hollow, while BC and CD are solids. Shear stress is not to exceed 47.5 N/mm2, take
modulus of rigidity 82.5 × 103 N/mm2, calculate:
a) The total twisting angle of the whole shaft (),
b) The max. applied torque in (N.m),
c) The length of each portion of the shaft, L1, L2, L3.
