1.03c Memory-Virtual MemoryLAB

The document discusses memory and virtual memory. It provides information about RAM, what is stored in RAM, why computers need virtual memory, and what a swap file is. It then discusses the main disadvantage of virtual memory and recommends adding additional RAM for a game system that is occasionally lagging based on the information researched. The document also includes a lab activity where the user identifies the amount of installed RAM, physical memory in use and available, and virtual memory on their Windows 7 system. It concludes with a knowledge test on memory and virtual memory topics.

1.03 LAB: Memory vs.

Virtual Memory Name: jose escamilla

PART ONE: Research Questions

Directions: Use the CompTIA IT Fundamentals certification handbook and the Internet to answer the following
questions.

1. What is RAM? Random access memory

2. What is held in RAM? typically used to store working data and machine code.

3. Why do computers need virtual memory? To compensate for physical memory shortages

4. What is a swap file? hidden with the . sys extension stored on the system drive.

5. Describe the main disadvantage of virtual memory. an OS can load programs larger than its

physical memory.

6. Scenario: You have noticed that since you have installed a new game that your system seems to be
lagging when playing the game. You only intend to play the game occasionally. When the game in not
in use, the system seems to return to normal. Based on your research above, would you recommend
adding additional RAM to the system or increasing virtual memory? Describe why you made your
decision. Adding additional ram because ram is what gets the data of the game and ram makes the
system faster.

PART TWO: System Analysis of RAM and Virtual RAM for Windows 7

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES TO THE SETTINGS WITHOUT INSTRUCTOR APPROVAL

IDENTIFY THE AMOUNT OF INSTALLED RAM:

1. Access your System Properties in one of the following ways:
a. Right-click on the Computer icon on the desktop and select Properties.
b. Click on the Start button, find Computer on the right-hand side, and then right-click on Computer
and select Properties.
c. Click on the Start button. Click on Control Panel. Select System and Security. Under the
Security heading, choose View amount of RAM and processor speed.
2. Locate Installed memory (RAM): heading to identify how much RAM is installed. Some systems might also
indicate the amount of useable RAM. Note: If you do not see the amount of memory listed under Installed
memory RAM: a memory chip is not being recognized by the computer.
3. Note the amount of installed RAM to be included in the chart below.
IDENTIFY THE AMOUNT OF MEMORY USAGE:
4. To start the Task Manager, use one of the following methods:
a. Simultaneously, hold down the CTRL + ALT + Delete keys and then release. On the screen that
appears, select Start Task Manager.
b. Click on the Start button and type Task Manager in the search box. Select View running
processes with the Task Manager.
5. In the Task Manger window, click on the Performance tab.
6. In the box labeled Physical Memory, note the amount of Total memory and Available memory to be
included on the chart in the Post-lab section.
7. In the box labeled Memory, note the amount of memory current in use to be included on the chart
below.

IDENTIFY THE AMOUNT OF VIRTUAL MEMORY:

7. Access your System Properties in one of the following ways:
a. Right-click on the Computer icon on the desktop and select Properties. In the left panel, click on
Advanced system settings.
b. Click on the Start button, find Computer on the right-hand side, and then right-click on Computer
and select Properties. In the left panel, click on Advanced system settings.
c. Click on the Start button. Click on Control Panel. Select System and Security. Click on System.
In the left panel, click on Advanced system settings.
8. On the Advanced tab, under the Performance section, click on Settings to open the Performance
Options dialogue box.
9. In the Performance Options dialogue box, click on the Advanced tab. In the Virtual memory section,
note the amount of memory allocated under the Total paging file size for all drives to be
included on the chart below.
