CATIA Brand Landscape

1. CHAPTER 1 - CATIA LANDSCAPE

1.1 CATIA Landscape

Notes:

In this chapter you will learn about the global CATIA Landscape, market trends and challenges.
1.2 Evolution of Products

Notes:

Things are not what they used to be. The world around us now, is much more complex than it was earlier.

For example, phones have evolved a lot from a basic communication device, to a cellphone offering better mobility
for busy workers and travelers, to a very smart device used for lot of applications and not just making calls.

Also, automobile industry has undergone massive growth and seems to have no boundaries for its progress when
we see the journey of automobiles from steam-powered wheeled vehicles, to the latest car that drives and parks
itself.

Additionally, Our way of doing day-to-day activities has evolved with the evolution of technology.

Not just the products are becoming different, the experiences we expect from the product are changing. We can see
this example of CLAAS tractor - its no more just a machine but it is now an experience in itself covering cabin
comfort, technology, safety among other things.

A great product design is not enough anymore and you need to move to designing experiences.
1.3 Creating Products

Notes:

Designing an appealing product is not enough anymore. Consumers today are expecting holistic product
experiences and sustainable innovation. Designers and engineers face the task of creating a product experience,
placing the individual at the center.

To further understand the complexity involved in development of a product let’s take an example of a car.

While we are accustomed to thinking cars as aesthetically pleasant mechanical devices, today’s typical consumer
cars contain complex layers of electrical and electronic systems, computerized devices and comfort and safety
systems.

Apart from the fact that these systems must perform their designated functions flawlessly, they must seamlessly
interoperate with each other all in context of a moving, vibrating vehicle, and subject to widely varying climate
conditions. And further this complexity is exponentially compounded in next generation vehicles.

Successfully developing, testing and validating such a complex product while ensuring safety, reliability and fulfilling
environmental as well as consumer requirements is a complex process.

5.2 What Is Systems Engineering?

Notes:

Developing smart products has never been more challenging. Half of all project failures could be prevented by more
effective systems engineering.

Creating successful systems is about ensuring the collaboration between functional disciplines, design disciplines
and speciality domains. It is also about having a rigorous and systemic approach: Separate the problem and the
solution, Decompose the system into smaller system while managing the interfaces, Specify the expected behavior
for each system, Define possible solutions and assess them against the systems specification, Design the selected
solution.
5.3 What Is Model Based Systems Engineering?

Notes:

Most of the systems currently in service today were all engineered using traditional document-centric approach. It
means that unlike mechanical design where 3D CAD have provided digitalization and rigor to those disciplines,
systems engineering has been done using disconnected documents such as Office.

Architectures are drawn using tools like Visio and PowerPoint, but they are only visualizations. A change in one
document is not reflected in any other documents and there is no single source of truth.

MBSE is the use of models for systems engineering. This approach involved visual models, built on a standard
modeling language such as UAF and SysML. The use of visual modeling and simulation facilitates the understanding,
enhance communication, aid in decision making, and globally capture the knowledge and improve overall quality.
This, in turn, offers the potential to optimize the integration and test of the system, and significantly contribute to
reduce cost, schedule, and risks in fielding a system.
5.4 Dassault Systèmes Strategy For Systems Engineering

Notes:

Dassault Systèmes strategy for systems engineering is based on three pillars.

The first Pillar is about engineering and managing all kind of Systems from Enterprise/Systems of Systems, to
Systems and hardware/software components.

The second Pillar is about federating all stakeholders and the value network involved in a development project to
accelerate the convergence, and ensure a digital thread using standards to ensure a continuity in the engineering.

The third Pillar is about creating Experience for all the systems, at any scale, in a modeling and simulation approach.

5.6 Systems Engineering - Value

Notes:

Systems Engineering helps in capturing and harmonizing information from multiple disciplines with a standard
language, within an integrated digital model of the system.
It virtually predicts system behavior before deriving requirements to specify the solution with accuracy.

Systems Engineering analyzes the system for completeness, consistency, traceability and contradiction checking,
thus preventing rework loops.

It continuously manages uncertainties and make trade-offs for early accurate decision making.

It facilitates digital collaboration among stakeholders and value network based models exchange, traceability and
integration.
