Assignment 2

1) The document is an assignment from Bahria University's Department of Computer Engineering. It contains two questions regarding discrete mathematics. 2) The first question asks the student to use rules of inference to show that certain hypotheses imply a conclusion, and to identify the rules of inference used in two argument examples. 3) The second question asks the student to prove several statements using direct proof, proof by contraposition, proof by contradiction, and to identify the type of proof used.

BAHRIA UNIVERSITY,

(Karachi Campus)
Department of Computer Engineering
ASSIGNMENT#02 – Fall 2019

COURSE TITLE: Discrete Mathematics COURSE CODE: GSC-221

Class: BCE-3(A) Shift: Morning
CLO#: 3 (Application) PLO#: 4 (Investigation)
Course Instructor: ENGR. HUMA TABASSUM Date: 23-Oct-2019
Due Date: 30-Oct-2019 Max. Marks: 05 Marks
Question Number: 1 (2.5 Marks)

a. Use rules of inference to show that the hypotheses “If interest rates drop, the housing
market will improve,” “Either the discount rate will drop or the housing market will not
improve,” and “Interest rates will drop” imply the conclusion “The discount rate will drop.”

b. What rule of inference is used in each of these arguments?

i. Ahmed, a student in this class, knows how to write programs in JAVA. Everyone
who knows how to write programs in JAVA can get a high-paying job. Therefore,
someone in this class can get a high-paying job.
ii. If it snows today, the university will close. The university is not closed today.
Therefore, it did not snow today.

c. For each of these collections of premises, what relevant conclusion or conclusions can be
drawn? Explain the rules of inference used to obtain each conclusion from the premises.

i. “Every student has an Internet account.” “Hamid does not have an Internet
account.” “Madiha has an Internet account.”
ii. “If I eat spicy foods, then I get unwell.” “I get unwell if the food is stale.” “I did
not get unwell.”

Question Number: 2 (2.5 Marks)

a. Use a direct proof to show that if n is an even integer, then n2 – 1 is odd.

b. Prove by contraposition that if n is a positive integer, then n is even if 7n + 4 is even.
c. Use a proof by contradiction to prove that the product of odd integers is not even.
d. Prove that if m and n are rational numbers, mn is rational. What kind of proof did you use?
e. Show that if n is an integer and n3 + 5 is even, then n is even using
i. a proof by contraposition.
ii. a proof by contradiction.
