CASE STUDY ON AMAZON WEB

SERVICES

Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS) is a subsidiary of Amazon that provides on-
demand cloud computing platforms and APIs to individuals, companies, and
governments, on a metered, pay-as-you-go basis . It is a web platform that offers
scalable and cost-effective cloud computing solutions. AWS (Amazon Web Services)
is a comprehensive, evolving cloud computing platform provided through Amazon
that consists of a combination of infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a
service (PaaS) and software as a service (SaaS) .

HISTORY
The forefront of the cloud revolution was conceived and is still driven today
by one company, Amazon, and their Cloud computing division Amazon Web
Services. Whilst AWS was born out of a need to grow Amazon’s internal IT
infrastructure, it has since become a multi-billion-dollar company, not only
providing support for Amazon’s IT backbone, but for other industry titans like
Netflix, Dropbox, and Reddit to name a few.

The genesis of AWS came in the early 2000s. After building

Merchant.com, Amazon's e-commerce-as-a-service platform that offers
third-party retailers a way to build their own web-stores, Amazon
pursued service-oriented architecture as a means to scale its
engineering operations, led by then CTO Allan Vermeulen. The very
beginning of AWS was in 2006 when the Amazon Simple Queue Service
(Amazon SQS) was launched. This was shortly followed by S3, EC2, and with
these first offerings made by AWS, the foundations were being built to push AWS
to be a global player in cloud computing.
SERVICES
Amazon web service is an on-demand cloud computing platform that
offers flexible, reliable, scalable, managed and easy-to-use, cost-
effective cloud computing solutions .

As of 2021, AWS comprises over 200 products and services

including computing, storage, networking, database, analytics, appli
cation services, deployment, management, machine learning,
mobile, developer tools, RobOps and tools for the Internet of Things.
The most popular include Amazon Elastic Compute
Cloud (EC2), Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), Amazon
Connect, and AWS Lambda (a serverless function that can perform
arbitrary code written in any language that can be configured to be
triggered by hundreds of events, including http calls).
Services expose functionality through APIs for clients to use in their
applications. These APIs are accessed over HTTP, using
the REST architectural style and SOAP protocol for older APIs and
exclusively JSON for newer ones. Clients can interact with these APIs in
various ways, including from the AWS console (a website), by using
SDKs written in various languages (such as Python, Java, and
JavaScript), or by making direct REST calls .

CONCLUSION
Apart from the services mentioned above, AWS offers services for
Gaming Technology, IOT, Business Applications, Management and
Governance, AR and VR, Media Services, Mobile, Robotics, etc. AWS
provides all these services with full security. Therefore, even though
the system is highly scalable and fast, it secures data, and the user
maintains full control over access management. Moreover, it is cost-
efficient and smart, which lets the user focus on what matters the
most, i.e., Business and Customer. Apart from all these, AWS is trying
to offer more and more services, and development is continuously
going to support and improve the services.
