Principles of Design

This document discusses key principles of design including balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, hierarchy, pattern, repetition, proportion, rhythm, variety, unity, and alignment. Balance distributes elements symmetrically or asymmetrically. Contrast emphasizes differences between elements using color values. Emphasis points out the main subject. Movement creates a sense of direction using lines or shades. Hierarchy controls importance through size, color or other factors. Pattern and repetition involve arranging repeating elements, with repetition lacking an overall structure. Proportion relates elements through color or form. Rhythm can be sharp, flowing or random. Variety blends diverse elements. Unity brings all elements together cohesively. Alignment organizes elements for improved composition.

Principles of design

By: Kaya Frank

Balance

Balance distributes the components of

your piece so its not as chaotic. To do this
symmetrically you divide the design or
color to be equal of each. Asymmetrically
you would put more color on one side and
more designs on the other side.
Contrast

Contrast is the opposite of balance where

you want to empathize the difference
between elements. Contrast has a focal
point usually pointed out with values of
color
Emphasis

Emphasis points out the main topic or

subject of your piece. It’s the very
important object to focus on and the
surrounding is supporting details.
Movement

Movement is the flow in a design.

Elements like lines or shades help show
the movement in a piece. It’s helps create
a sense of direction.
Hierarchy

Hierarchy uses several principles to

emphasize certain things in a design. It
controls factors to importance. You can do
this with things like size or color.
Pattern

Patterns are a visual element that are

arranged. Patterns are formed by lines,
colors, and and shapes as long as they
create a repetitive structure.
Repetition

What’s the difference between pattern and

repetition. With repetition you just
constantly repeat something with out it
hay in general to make a design.
Proportion

Proportion is the relationship of parallels

on functions with colors. Proportion can
be split into to an unbalanced proportion.
Rhythm

Visual Rhythm can be sharp or flowing,

and random. Progressive rhythm is
constantly changing and repeating.
Random rhythm has no repetitive features
and is completely random.
Variety

Variety is a blend of diverse elements in a

elaborate relationship. Variety works well
with unity despite their differences. You
can put the, in all kinds of place with
other shapes and elements.
Unity

Unity is what brings all of elements

together. It makes the final piece together.
Alignment

Alignment is the piece that lines up the

visual element of a piece. It organizes the
elements of art to create a better piece.
