Step7 Pelton

Carly Pelton reflects on a recent instructional unit and identifies three short-term goals to improve her teaching practice: 1) incorporate more brain breaks for students, 2) find a more effective attention grabber, and 3) make lessons more relatable to students. Her long-term goal is to provide students with a wider variety of ways to complete and show their work by November 17th by researching different strategies and incorporating them into lessons.

STEP Standard 7 – Reflecting on Instruction to Improve Student

Progress
Improved Practice Based on the Unit of Study
Based on the experience of developing and delivering your instructional unit, list three short-
term goals to improve specific areas of your teaching practice based on the unit of instruction
and describe your plan to reach each short-term goal.

Plan to Reach the Goal (i.e., professional

development, research on the Internet,
Short-Term Goal
observation of a veteran teacher, etc.)
1. Give the students more “breaks” in I can research different “brain break” ideas
their learning with “brain breaks.” on the internet to utilize in my classroom. I
can break up some of the learning with short
dancing, yoga, or other interactive videos.
The students will enjoy having a quick break
to get up and moving.

2. Find a more effective attention I can achieve this goal by doing research on
grabber. the internet to find some ideas. I can also
observe more teachers and see what attention
grabbers work in their classrooms.

3. Make my lessons more relatable to the I can include some of the student’s interests
students. in my lessons to keep them more engaged.
For example, I can include characters from
their favorite video games and TV shows in
story problems. I can interview a veteran
teacher and ask for their input on applying
this to student learning.
Long-Term Goals: Teachers who are dedicated to their profession and to improving the lives of
students will continually look for ways to grow and learn. The best way to ensure that learning is
prioritized is to create a long-term goal. Create one long term goal that is specific and
measurable. Make sure to discuss the following:
Long-Term Goal: Provide the students with a wider variety of ways to complete/show
their work.
Rationale: Why did you choose this goal? How I chose this goal because I noticed that I
do you expect it to improve the outcomes of your usually have the students showing me their
future students? work on worksheets. I sometimes add their
individual white boards to my lessons, but I
believe they would benefit from having a
wider variety of ways to show me their work.
End Date: By when do you expect to accomplish I expect to accomplish this goal by November
this goal? 17th. This gives me three weeks to research,
accumulate, and test different ways to allow
my students to show their work in the
classroom. After that point, I can incorporate
what I find works best for my class into each
school day.
Action Timeline: What steps will you take to From now until November 5th, I will do
complete this goal, and by when will you take research on different ideas and create a list of
them? Example: the exact resources that I can utilize from my
1/31/18: Join AACTE school. I will also start including these ideas
in my lesson plans for the school week
starting on November 6th. After that, I will
slowly start incorporating the different
strategies in my classroom. I will observe and
take notes on the pros and cons of each. By
November 17th, I will determine which
strategies worked best for my students and
which ones I should continue and no longer
continue to use.
Resources: What resources are available to assist The school has different resources I can

I can hang these up in the classroom to have
the students participate in “vertical learning.”
I can also do research on the internet to find
other ideas to use.
