Hardware and Software

The document discusses computer hardware, software, and their benefits. It defines hardware as the physical components of a computer system, including the CPU, memory, storage devices, motherboard, and input/output devices. Software is defined as the programs and instructions that control hardware functions. There are two types of software: system software that manages computer resources and application software that enables specific tasks. Application software benefits users by enhancing communication, increasing productivity, organizing data, and providing entertainment.

Computer Hardware and Software

A. Discuss the following questions each in two or more paragraphs:

1. What are the major components of computer?

A computer is a complex machine composed of various components that work together to

enable the computer to perform a wide range of tasks. These components include the
Microprocessor- is the brain of the computer, responsible for manipulating data; Memory (RAM):
Random Access Memory (RAM) is temporary storage that holds data and programs. RAM
allows for quick access to data and is essential for multitasking and overall system performance;
Storage Devices: Storage devices are used for long-term data storage. These store the operating
system, software, files, and user data.
There is also the Input Devices which are hardware components that allow users to input
data or commands into the computer. Common input devices include keyboards, mice,
touchscreens, and microphones; Output Devices: Output devices display or transmit information
processed by the computer. Common output devices include monitors, printers, speakers, and
headphones; and Operating System (OS): The operating system is software that manages
hardware resources, provides a user interface, and allows users to run applications. Common
operating systems include Windows, macOS, and Linux.

2. What is computer hardware?

Computer hardware, based on understanding, refers to the physical components or tangible

parts of a computer system. These components are the actual, physical devices that you can touch
and see. This is where you can do whatever you want to do in a computer because Hardware is
the one that performs tasks and executes instructions to the computer.

There are a variety of components of computer that belongs in computer hardware. First,
Central Processing Unit (CPU): The CPU is the "brain" of the computer, responsible for
manipulating data; second, Memory (RAM): RAM (Random Access Memory) provides
temporary storage for data and program instructions that can be accessed quickly; third, Storage
Devices: These include Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) and other storage media, used for long-term
data storage; fourth, Motherboard: The motherboard is the main circuit board that connects and
houses the CPU, RAM, and other essential components; fifth, Input devices: is used to provide
data and command to the computer. An examples of input device are keyboards, mice, monitors,
printers, and other peripherals that allow users to interact with the computer and receive output;
and lastly, Output Devices: is the result of processing data and is either visual or auditory; output
devices show you those results.
3. What is computer software?
In contrast to computer hardware, computer software, are those non-intangible programs,
instructions, and data needed for the computer hardware to perform tasks. The Microsoft Word,
for instance, is an example of computer software. For us to input our assignment by typing it on
keyboard, we will be needing Microsoft word. There are two categories of computer software,
namely system software and application software.
System software are those critical parts of computer. They help computer to manage its own
internal resources, thus it was named as “background software.” Accordingly, the programs that
belong in this system include the Operating System– programs that coordinate computer
resources, provide an interface between users and the computer, and run applications; Utilities–
are programs designed to help to analyze, configure, optimize or maintain a computer; Device
drivers– specialized programs that controls a specific hardware device attached to a computer;
and Programming languages– is a set of instructions, commands and others to develop a software
program. Application software, on the other hand, are apps or programs that enable users to
perform a wide range of tasks and functions on their computers. Examples of application
software include word processors, web browsers, video games, spreadsheet programs, email
clients, and more.
To sum it up, computer hardware includes the physical components of a computer system,
while computer software includes the instructions and programs that tell the hardware what to
do. Together, hardware and software work in tandem to enable a computer to perform various
tasks and functions, which aids users in every aspect.

4. How can application software be beneficial to the users?

Application software, with its apps and programs, offers a wide range of benefits to users
across various aspects of their personal and professional lives. First, it enhances communication
between users. Users can easily get in touch with their friends, family, colleagues, and such using
communication apps like email, messaging apps, and video conferencing software regardless of
their location. Next, it increases productivity. Application software can increase the users’ work
speed and they can perform their tasks in less time. For example, in MS Word users can do quick
formatting and the software also provides them with spell checking.

Moreover, it organizes better data and stores it efficiently. Applications can assist users in
structuring and maintaining large amounts of information, such as financial records, client data,
and project specifics. Additionally, it allows users to access information with the use of web
browsers and news applications. Not only information does users can access, but also news,
research, and educational resources quickly and conveniently. It further gives people
entertainment and enjoyment through accessing apps like music, games app, and many more.
