Assignment 5 - EM

This document contains an assignment with 5 problems related to friction for a First Year B. Tech. Mechanical Engineering course. The problems involve determining forces required to start a wedge, finding the maximum weight for equilibrium on an inclined plane, calculating coefficients of friction in situations involving a ladder leaning against a wall and a person standing on it, determining the maximum weight that can be lowered by rope on a spur, and finding the coefficient of friction between a ladder and the floor. Solutions to each problem are provided.

Assignment 6: Friction

1. Determine the force P required to start the wedge as shown in Figure. The
angle of friction for all surfaces of contact is 15°. [Ans. 26.6784 kN]

2. A 3000 N block is placed on an inclined plane as shown in Figure. Find the

maximum value of W for equilibrium if tipping does not occur. Assume
coefficient of friction as 0.2. [Ans. 2636.15]

3. A ladder 5 m long rests on a horizontal ground and leans against a smooth

vertical wall at an angle of 70° with the horizontal. The weight of the ladder
is 300 N. The ladder is on the verge of sliding when a man weighing 750 N
stands on a rung 1.5 m high. Calculate the coefficient of friction between the
ladder and the floor. [Ans. μ = 0.1837]
4. Determine the maximum weight that can be lowered by a person who can
exert a 300 N pull on rope if the rope is wrapped 2.5 turns round a horizontal
spur as shown in Fig. 5.33. Coefficient of friction between spur and the rope
is 0.3. [Ans. 33395.33 N]

5. A 4 m ladder weighing 200 N is placed against a vertical wall as shown in

Fig. 5.32 as a man weighing 800 N, reaches a point 2.7 m from A, the ladder
is about to slip. Assuming that the coefficient of friction between the ladder
and the wall is 0.2, determine the coefficient of friction between the ladder
and the floor. [Ans. 0.3548]
