What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you master solving routine and non-routine problems involving
addition and subtraction of decimal numbers including money using
appropriate problem solving strategies and tools. The scope of this module
permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language
used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of pupils. The lessons are
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in
which you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you
are now using.
After going through this module, you are expected to:
• solve routine and non-routine problems involving addition and
subtraction of decimal numbers including money using appropriate
problem solving strategies and tools (M5NS- IIc-108.1)

What I Know

We’ll start with what you already know. Follow the instruction carefully
and answer the pretest below. If you get a perfect score, you can skip this
module. Otherwise, you need to go through this module to master the skill.

What’s New

Have you ever been to mall?

Have you ever experienced to choose and buy your own clothes and
shoes? The story below is about a Grade 5 boy who bought his personal
things. Read the situation below and try to answer the question that follows.

Jacob bought a pair of shoes for ₱ 245.00, a pair of socks for ₱ 42.75,
and a T-shirt for ₱ 526.99. He gave the cashiers a thousand-peso bill. How
much change did he receive?

George Polya is a Hungarian mathematician who, in 1945, formulated

four steps in problem solving namely: understand the problem, make a plan,
carry out the plan, and look back. Now let us solve the problem above using
these steps.

a. What is asked in the problem?

b. What are given?
c. What is the operation to be used?
d. What is the mathematical sentence?
e. Is the answer reasonable?

3
What is It

Solving Routine and Non-Routine Problems Involving Addition

and Subtraction Involving Money

Were you able to solve the problem?

Let’s check on how the problem is solved.
Learning to utilize Polya’s four-step process is important in becoming a
good problem-solver.
Step 1: Understand
▪ What is asked in the problem?
The amount of change that Jacob received.

▪ What are given?

a pair of shoes for ₱ 245.00, a pair of socks for ₱ 42.75, and a
T-shirt for ₱ 526.99

Step 2: Make a Plan

▪ What operation will be used?
Addition and subtraction

▪ What is the mathematical sentence?

₱ 1 000 – (₱ 245.00 + ₱ 42.75 + ₱ 526.99) = N

Step 3: Carry Out the Plan

Since the number sentence has more than one operation, we will
apply PMDAS rule in order to properly solve for N.

₱ 1 000 – (₱ 245.00 + ₱ 42.75 + ₱ 526.99) = N

₱ 1 000 – ₱ 814.74
= ₱ 185.26

Step 4: Check and Look Back

▪ Is the answer reasonable?
Check:
Do the backward solution to check
₱ 185.26 + ₱ 814.74 = ₱ 1 000
Therefore, Jacob’s change is ₱ 185.26
Now, let us consider another problem.

4
Judith bought a notebook for ₱ 34.75 and a pen for ₱ 18.50. She gave
the cashier ₱ 100.00. How much change did she get?
Step 1: Understand
▪ What is asked?
Amount of her change

▪ What are the given facts?

a notebook for ₱ 34.75 and a pen for ₱ 18.50
Step 2: Make a Plan
▪ What operation will be used?
Addition and subtraction

▪ What is the mathematical sentence?

₱ 100 – (₱ 34.75 + ₱ 18.50) = N

Step 3: Carry Out the Plan

Perform first the operation inside the parenthesis.
₱ 100 – (₱ 34.75 + ₱ 18.50) = N
₱ 100 – ₱ 53.25
= ₱ 46.75

Step 4: Check and Look Back

▪ Is the answer correct?
Check:
Add the sum of all the things she bought and her change.
(₱ 34.75 + ₱ 18.50) + ₱ 46.75 = ₱ 100
Therefore, Judith’s change is ₱ 46.75.
