CIMATRON Drafting - Tutorial
CIMATRON Drafting - Tutorial
Drafting Introduction
Using the Cimatron E drafting application it is possible to create part or assembly drawing sheets, composed of
2D views.
Within each drawing there are one or more sheets, to which drafting symbols and annotations can be added and
edited. These drawing sheets contain specific characteristics such as drafting standard, view attributes, frame,
template etc.
In this exercise various drafting concepts will be discussed along side Cimatron E's dynamic capabilities.
Steps to Follow
The document used in Cimatron E drafting is called a drawing. A drawing with one sheet is created automatically
with the creation of a drafting document.
By default, the new drafting document contains one sheet. This sheet is represented by a leaf on the drafting
tree. To create a new sheet, right click on Drawing within the Drafting Tree and select Create New Sheet, or
use the main menu command Sheet/Create New Sheet.
The drawing contains default drafting standards and view attributes. To view and or change these properties use
either of the following two methods:
1. Right click on ISO in the Drafting Tree and selected Edit. An example is shown below:
2. Select Tools/Preferences from the menu bar. The Preferences Editor window is displayed. Select
Drafting/Drawing and Sheet/Settings. The following is displayed.
If a frame is assigned for sheets, all new sheets created will use the frame. Do not check the Frame checkbox
since a frame will then be manually assigned.
Within this option there is the choice either to choose a pre fabricated frame or create a new user defined frame.
Click on the information symbol below for more details:
Expand the sheet in the tree. There is currently no frame defined, as indicated by "NONE".
Either;
OR
Clicking on the IT option will show a list of standard frame sizes available from Cimatron IT. For more
information refer to the Online Help.
Only the 'E Frame' i.e. a Cimatron E Frame can be edited, as will be seen later on in the tutorial.
Once the frame is selected the Edit Frame and Save Frame buttons become active.
The Active colors can be set in the Preferences Editor under Drafting/Active_Wireframe_Geometry.
Select the offset tool from the Sketcher Toolbar, on the right of the screen, and select the line below:
Click the Line tool and create the line circled below:
Frames are stored in the default file location within the frames directory under
\\Cimatron\CimatronE\Data\frames. If the frame is stored in another directory, click on the Change Directory icon
upon entering the Frame Settings box to select the appropriate directory.
Views
A View is the 2D projection of a model that maintains its associativity to the model. A change made to the part
will be reflected in the View. A view is a projection of a Cimatron E part or assembly file and is created according
to the active UCS.
The View Creation command enables the projection of a Cimatron E part or assembly file.
2. Select type of projection and set the Part, Section and UCS filters.
5. Reset any visibility changes made and select the required HDL
regeneration mode.
For further details regarding Active Parts visibility browse to the View step and click on the word 'Expanding'.
1. Simple view - a projection of the part. This view type is created by selecting the desired projection, or by
defining the direction of the projection onto another view.
2. Derived view - a view created by projecting an existing view.
New
Either;
OR
Within the Cimatron E Explorer, select the Clip.elt part document (located in the \\Tutorial
Workfiles\Design directory).
Scale
Position the view by clicking above the title block. The view is relocated by dragging to the desired location.
Once a view has been applied, the projection type cannot be changed. Therefore, it is important that any
necessary changes to the projection type be made before closing the dialog.
Positioning
Left click on the ISO view created, and notice how the Derived View icon appears in the View Creation
dialog.
Click on the view created i.e. the left view, and then click to the right of the view.
Click on the Left View again and click below the view.
If the View Creation dialog is exited, simply double click on the desired view to reopen the View Creation
dialog box, to EDIT in the DERIVED VIEW MODE.
The derived view is aligned with the base view. If either view is moved horizontally, the other will follow.
The derived view is created according to the current drafting standard (ISO). Dragging a new view below the
existing one creates a top view, and Vice-versa. With ANSI, the opposite would happen.
M-View
The M-View (Model View) is a set of parameters and annotations that are grouped together in order to define a
certain characteristics.
If the View Creation dialog is open an inactive, any view in the display area can be clicked to activate the
dialog.
Change the views scale to 1:1 and place it to the right of the Top view.
This picture was created in the Cimatron Part environment, by rotating the part as necessary, and saving the
resulting view under the M-View tab.
Naming
Rename the views in the Drafting Tree as follows:
In the Drafting Tree, right click on a view and select Rename from the Popup menu.
• Simple 1 = ISO
• Simple 2 = Left
• Simple 3 = Rear
• Simple 4 = Top
The names under each view automatically change due to the default Symbolic Text parameter remaining
unchanged.
There are now four standard views and one M-View view.
To change the default projection for new simple views, select Tools / Preferences / Drafting / View /
Simple_View. In this dialog, it is possible to change the projection type.
Open the View Creation dialog and click on a view to activate it.
The View names in the above picture were temporarily enlarged for purposes of clarity.
Enter
Enter the dimension option by either:
OR
3. Selecting Symbols/Dimension.
The dimension is now displayed and the dimension dialog becomes active:
These hotspots are also available by moving the mouse around the dimension itself.
You can change the parameters both in the creating and the editing stages.
Parameters
Set the following parameters for the dimension:
In the dialog box select the Tolerance hotspot and set the parameters as follows:
Either Click with the middle mouse button or press the icon to apply this dimension.
Editing
Remove the tolerance parameter, and center the dimension.
OR
Click in the Tolerance hotspot and change the 'Uni Tol.' option to 'None'.
The default character size can also be set in the Preferences Editor by selecting Tools / Preferences / Drafting
/ General / Character_Size.
If the preferences are changed while a drafting tool, such as dimensions, is open, the change will only take
effect AFTER the tool has been exited and reentered.
Exit from the Font Style dialog box and the Dimension dialog.
The radius of the arc, is invoked by clicking once on the circumference, and then positioning the dimension.
Color
Change the colors of the dimensions below to blue:
Drag a box that contains the Top view, and its entities.
This method can also be used to change the character size of one or more dimensions.
If a new dimension or drafting entity is created now, it will be displayed in black and not blue, as the default
color has not been changed.
The default color is changed by selecting the color dialog from the drafting toolbar (while no entity has been
selected).
The views themselves have not changed color. The modifying of views is carried out in the View attributes
dialog, discussed in the Set step.
Single click on the two dimensions circled below and select Multiple Edit:
Within the dimension dialog box, set the terminator to outside and edit the terminator style.
The edit group function can also be entered by double clicking an entity and clicking the Edit Entities icon in
the entities Dialog.
Exit.
Position
Zoom into the right hand side of the Left view.
Either;
• Right click on the dimension and select Delete from the Popup menu.
OR
At the Right Hand Side of the Left view a Base Line dimension will be created.
Before applying the dimension, click on the Base Line dimension icon.
Chain
The Linear Chain option allows the measurement of a series of individual linear dimensions in a sequence.
On the other side of the Left view, pick two points (circled) to create the dimension below:
Both the Base Line and Chain dimension options are ONLY available when creating NEW linear dimensions.
Ordinate
Using the Top view, create the following ordinate dimension:
Section
The Section Line tool constructs line(s), based on selected Points, facilitating Section creation at a later stage.
Section Lines remain associative to these points regardless of geometry changes.
The Section line dialog box now appears and the cursor changes, standing by for the selection of suitable points
for a section line.
Right click on the screen and from the Popup menu select Align section line. The cursor now changes to
the constraints cursor.
This option can also be activated by clicking on the Align Section Line icon in the Section Line dialog box.
Within the dialog box the hotspots enable editing of Letter and Arrow entities of the section line.
Move
The section line A-A appears as below:
Note, how the vertical constraint line appears as the line reaches the point where the 'Align sec line' point was
placed.
View
A new view will now be created.
Open the View creation dialog and click on the section line.
Prior to generating views, you can define how to treat hidden lines (HDL).
Fast HDL: Create a fast but less accurate view with hidden segments based on the triangulation of the model.
The result is not high quality and silhouette lines are not displayed.
Should Cimatron E create a simple view as opposed to a section view, adjust the Contour tolerance
parameter as necessary.
This view includes the lines representing what's "behind" the section.
When placed, the view is automatically created on a horizontal constraint with the section line i.e. aligned with
the section line.
To break the constraints of this view and place it in a more appropriate position in the frame, apply the
following steps:
While keeping the ALT key pressed, drag the view to the bottom left of the frame.
Click here for a detailed step-by-step guide for creating the section line.
1.
2.
4.
5.
Zoom into section view Section A-A and double click on the hatch.
Still within the hatch function, verify the Add geometry to contour button is selected and select Single
Indication from the drop down menu.
Click in the four closed contours shown below, clicking Apply in the Hatch dialog to accept each selection:
The 'Single Indication' option can also be used with closed contour hidden lines.
The section line names can be changed using the same method to change the view names i.e. through the
Drafting Tree as seen in the Naming step.
3D Section
Open the View Creation dialog, select a view and click on the M-View icon.
Double click the Top view in the Drawing Tree to edit it.
From the Show & Hide Model symbols, select the section line and click OK.
The section line used to create the 3D section has been placed on the view.
Note that you can not modify the shape of section line created in the part. You may only change its fonts,
character size etc,.
Derived View
Another way to create a view is by selecting a section view or a view comprising an edge, as seen below.
Press the Edges and Curves filter and depress the Views filter.
The edge picked corresponds to the edge of the face of the model seen here.
Relocate the view between the section views and name the view 'Derived View'.
Earlier on in the tutorial (the color step in the Dimensioning chapter) the drafting entities were modified. In the
View Attributes chapter views attributes themselves will be changed.
Set
Right-Click on the Left view name in the Drawing Tree, and select Set View Attributes.
1. In the View Attributes dialog all attributes with the As Hidden option selected will now use the attributes
from the Model hidden definition.
3. If the None option is selected as a definition, then the attributes are controlled independently.
4. In the Preferences Editor select Drafting / Drawing and Sheet / View Attributes to define the view
attributes of the document.
The Reset line attributes option removes all the view's existing attributes and recreates them according to
what is selected in the View Attributes dialog. (Removes all manual changes by the user).
Delete
Notice that the Left and Top views have not changed due to their attributes being set individually. These
attributes can however, be deleted.
The view now returns to the Global attributes set i.e. the default for the models hidden and visible lines, as
seen in the last step
Detailed View
Create
Within the Quick Filter, verify the Edges and Curves filter is turned on and the Views filter is turned off.
Within the dialog, the only projection option available is the detailed view option.
The detailed view has been generated including the new colors set above.
Add
Up until this stage in the tutorial the Dimension drafting entity and various view attributes have been discussed.
Within the drafting environment, there are several other drafting symbols, some of which will be shown in the
following steps.
Click once above the Left view. The surface roughness symbol appears.
Click Undo to restore the leader, and exit to create the symbol.
Click the Break Segment parameter on the leader and drag it around the screen.
Use the horizontal and vertical constraint lines to position the point so that the segments form a right angle.
Another leader will now be created from the Pick a point parameter.
Lay
Return to edit mode. Within the dialog box locate and click the Lay parameter hotspot.
From the drop down box, select the C icon to define a circular shape, and exit.
Geometric Tolerance
Placement
Click on the Geometrical Datum icon.
Ensure the font is set to 5 and press apply in the Geometrical Datum dialog box
Click on the line below, and click to the right of the view.
Align
The Align option enables the alignment of two or more drafting entities. Once aligned, if one entity is dragged the
other entity will move accordingly.
Using the Left view create and place the two dimensions circled below:
These two dimensions will now be aligned via the Order Symbols function.
By Distance
As well as dimensions, other types of drafting entities can be moved or ordered according to selected
parameters.
First select the Surface Roughness entity and Second the ID Number.
The entities are placed in order of selection i.e. the first entity selected will be the base dimension and the last
entity selected will be the top dimension. e.g. the Surface Roughness entity will be the positioned as the base
dimension in this case.
Exit.
Set the distance to 30 and Middle mouse click to accept the placement.
ID Numbers can also be created automatically as can be seen in the Advanced Drafting Tutorial, under the ID
Number Step.
Symbolic Text
Text
A few details will now be added to the frame.
The File name and Sheet number automatically appear in the Title Box.
Right click on the A2mod frame, in the Drafting Tree, and select Edit Frame.
The Text dialog appears and the cursor changes to the text cursor.
On the right hand side of the Text Editor i.e. the Symbolic Text drop down, click on the Scale option:
Edit the scale either in the Text editor OR by selecting underline, so it appears as below:
Open the Text function, and place the 'new' text as shown below:
Open the Text Editor and select %% Part Name from the Symbolic Text drop down.
Right click on the A2mod frame and notice, the Attach Symbolic Text option is active.
If further dragging of the text is required, select the Edit Frame option.
Template
Save
Select Sheet/Template/Save sheet as template.
Click Yes.
In the Drafting templates dialog box, name the template ‘Drafting Exercise’.
The Apply Drafting Templates dialog contains the following two main areas:
• The Model M-View Tree area (on the left side of the window), which includes the models to be assigned
to the template. In this case since the model was exported to drafting, the model is already loaded and
assigned.
• The Template Layout area (on the right side of the window), contains the drafting template layout, as
follows:
• Tree Root: Indicates the model name, (when no models are assigned, the default name is Model
0). If the template contains more than one model, each additional model will be assigned a
sequential number, for example, Model 1,
Model 2 and so on.
• Views: These are the saved views that exist in the template, displayed as simple views.
Note that the Section and the Detailed views were not saved in the template.
Load 3
Re-assign the model to the template.
Load 4
The section views and the detail views are not visible, since they were not saved in the template. For this
reason the symbolic text (scale and view name) is not attached, as the views were not loaded into the document.
More information on templates can be found in the closing steps of the Electrode tutorial.
