Drafting Introduction
Using the Cimatron E drafting application it is possible to create part or assembly drawing sheets, composed of
2D views.

Within each drawing there are one or more sheets, to which drafting symbols and annotations can be added and
edited. These drawing sheets contain specific characteristics such as drafting standard, view attributes, frame,
template etc.

In this exercise various drafting concepts will be discussed along side Cimatron E's dynamic capabilities.

Steps to Follow

Below are the steps to follow in this tutorial.

CimatronE 8.5 Drafting 1

Open a Drafting Document
Open up the Drafting application within Cimatron E.

The Cimatron drafting application now opens:

The document used in Cimatron E drafting is called a drawing. A drawing with one sheet is created automatically
with the creation of a drafting document.

2 Drafting CimatronE 8.5

Create Sheet
A sheet contains a layout of 2D views of a model, part, or assembly. In addition to 2D geometry created using
the sketcher, drafting symbols and annotations can be added to sheets. An unlimited number of sheets can be
included in a drawing to allow one to arrange numerous views as required.

By default, the new drafting document contains one sheet. This sheet is represented by a leaf on the drafting
tree. To create a new sheet, right click on Drawing within the Drafting Tree and select Create New Sheet, or
use the main menu command Sheet/Create New Sheet.

The drawing contains default drafting standards and view attributes. To view and or change these properties use
either of the following two methods:

1. Right click on ISO in the Drafting Tree and selected Edit. An example is shown below:

2. Select Tools/Preferences from the menu bar. The Preferences Editor window is displayed. Select
Drafting/Drawing and Sheet/Settings. The following is displayed.

If a frame is assigned for sheets, all new sheets created will use the frame. Do not check the Frame checkbox
since a frame will then be manually assigned.

CimatronE 8.5 Drafting 3

Select Frame
For each sheet in the drawing, a customized frame standard outline that encloses the contents of the sheet can
be created. This frame contains a title block with engineering information drawing name, and number, designer,
scale, tolerance, etc.

Import a frame to add to the sheet.

Within this option there is the choice either to choose a pre fabricated frame or create a new user defined frame.
Click on the information symbol below for more details:

Expand the sheet in the tree. There is currently no frame defined, as indicated by "NONE".

Either;

• Double click on 'NONE'

• Select Sheet/Frame Settings.

OR

• Right Click on 'NONE' and select 'Frame Settings'.

The following dialogue box now appears:

Clicking on the IT option will show a list of standard frame sizes available from Cimatron IT. For more
information refer to the Online Help.

4 Drafting CimatronE 8.5

Do not choose any of these frames and instead remain in the 'E Frame' option.

Only the 'E Frame' i.e. a Cimatron E Frame can be edited, as will be seen later on in the tutorial.

Select the A2 Frame.

Once the frame is selected the Edit Frame and Save Frame buttons become active.

Press the Apply/Close button in the Frame Settings box.

CimatronE 8.5 Drafting 5

Edit
Right click in the A2 frame in the Drafting Tree.

Select Edit Frame.

The frame is now active as is reflected in the color of the boundary.

The Active colors can be set in the Preferences Editor under Drafting/Active_Wireframe_Geometry.

Within the sketcher, various changes to the frame can be made.

Select the offset tool from the Sketcher Toolbar, on the right of the screen, and select the line below:

Click below the original line to place the offset line.

Click the Line tool and create the line circled below:

When editing an E Frame, only the frame itself is affected.

6 Drafting CimatronE 8.5

Press the Apply button in the Frame Settings box.

Now click on Save Frame and type A2mod.

Select the Apply/Close icon.

The 'A2mod' frame now appears in the Drafting Tree:

Frames are stored in the default file location within the frames directory under
\\Cimatron\CimatronE\Data\frames. If the frame is stored in another directory, click on the Change Directory icon
upon entering the Frame Settings box to select the appropriate directory.

CimatronE 8.5 Drafting 7

View Creation

Views
A View is the 2D projection of a model that maintains its associativity to the model. A change made to the part
will be reflected in the View. A view is a projection of a Cimatron E part or assembly file and is created according
to the active UCS.

The View Creation command enables the projection of a Cimatron E part or assembly file.

1. The part from which the view is derived.

2. Select type of projection and set the Part, Section and UCS filters.

3. Scale and rotation parameters and Active Part visibility.

4. Set the position and distance of text, from a view.

5. Reset any visibility changes made and select the required HDL
regeneration mode.

The View Creation dialog is expanded using the expand icon.

For further details regarding Active Parts visibility browse to the View step and click on the word 'Expanding'.

8 Drafting CimatronE 8.5

There are four different types of views with the view creation box:

1. Simple view - a projection of the part. This view type is created by selecting the desired projection, or by
defining the direction of the projection onto another view.
2. Derived view - a view created by projecting an existing view.

3. Section view - a view created by cutting an existing view.

4. Detail view - an enlargement of a specified area of an existing view.

New

Either;

• Click on the View Creation Icon.

• Select Sheet/View Creation from the main menu bar,

OR

• Right-click on 'sheet' in the Data Tree, and select 'New View'

The Apply Drafting Templates dialog contains the following two main areas:

• The Model M-View Tree area (on the left side of the window), which includes the models to be assigned
to the template. In this case since the model was exported to drafting, the model is already loaded and
assigned.
• The Template Layout area (on the right side of the window), contains the drafting template layout, as
follows:
• Tree Root: Indicates the model name, (when no models are assigned, the default name is Model
0). If the template contains more than one model, each additional model will be assigned a
sequential number, for example, Model 1,
Model 2 and so on.
• Views: These are the saved views that exist in the template, displayed as simple views.
Note that the Section and the Detailed views were not saved in the template.
