HORIZONTAL CURVES
Problem No. 2: SIMPLE CURVE, PASSING THRU A GIVEN POINT
A simple curve is to be run joining two tangents of bearings 𝑆76𝑜 50′ 𝑊 and 𝑁77𝑜 00′ 𝑊 and is
to pass a point “X” of coordinates 43.88N and 11.26E. If the coordinates of PC are 50.00N and
50.00E and the stationing of vertex is 2+972.45, find the radius of the curve, the stationing of PT
and the stationing of point “X”.
Given:
𝐵𝑇𝐵𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔𝐴𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒 = 76𝑜 30′
𝐹𝑇𝐵𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔𝐴𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒 = 77𝑜 00′
𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑉 = 2 + 972.45
𝐶𝑜𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡 𝑋:
𝑥1 = 11.26; 𝑦1 = 43.88
𝐶𝑜𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑃𝐶:
𝑥2 = 50; 𝑦2 = 50
Required:
Radius of the curve R
Station PT
Station Point X
Solution:
1. Solve the bearing and distance between PC and point X
For the bearing:
𝐿𝑎𝑡 = −(𝑦2 − 𝑦1 ) = −(50 − 43.88) = −6.12
𝐷𝑒𝑝 = −(𝑥2 − 𝑥1 ) = −(50 − 11.26) = −38.74
38.74
𝜃 = tan−1 ( 6.12 ) = 81.02𝑜
𝐵𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔: 𝑆81.02𝑜 𝑊
For the distance between PC and point X
̅̅̅̅̅̅ = √(𝐿𝑎𝑡)2 + (𝐷𝑒𝑝)2
𝑃𝐶𝑋
̅̅̅̅̅̅ = √(6.12)2 + (38.74)2
𝑃𝐶𝑋
̅̅̅̅̅̅ = 39.22 m
𝑃𝐶𝑋
2. Solve the Radius of the curve R
𝛼 = 𝜃 − 𝐵𝑇𝐵𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔𝐴𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒
𝛼 = 81.02𝑜 − 76𝑜 30′
𝛼 = 4.52𝑜
̅̅̅̅̅
PCX
sin 𝛼 = 2
R
PCX 39.22 m
𝑅= =
2 sin α 2[sin(4.52o )]
𝑅 = 248.84 𝑚
3. Solve the stationing of PT
𝐼 = 180𝑜 − (𝐵𝑇𝐵𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔𝐴𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒 + 𝐹𝑇𝐵𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔𝐴𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒 )
𝐼 = 180𝑜 − (76𝑜 30′ + 77𝑜 00′ )
𝐼 = 26.5𝑜

𝐷= = = 4.61𝑜
R 248.84
𝐼 26.5o
𝑇 = 𝑅 tan ( ) = (248.84 𝑚) tan ( )
2 2
𝑇 = 58.59 𝑚
𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑃𝑇 = 𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑉 − 𝑇 + 𝐿𝐶
Station PT = (2 + 972.45) − 58.59 + 114.97
𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑃𝑇 = 3 + 028.83
4. Solve stationing of point X
𝑙𝑒𝑡 𝐿𝐶1 𝑏𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑢𝑟𝑣𝑒 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑃𝐶 𝑡𝑜 𝑝𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡 𝑋
20[2α] (20 m)[2(4.52o )]
𝐿𝐶1 = =
D 4.61o
𝐿𝐶1 = 39.22 𝑚
𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑃𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡 𝑋 = 𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑉 − 𝑇 + 𝐿𝐶1
𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑃𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡 𝑋 = (2 + 972.45) − 58.59 + 39.22
𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑃𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡 𝑋 = 2 + 953.08
