This document describes the steps to determine if there is a significant relationship between the weight and chest size of infants at birth using Pearson's product-moment correlation. The null hypothesis is that there is no correlation, and the alternative hypothesis is that there is a correlation. The correlation coefficient (rs) is calculated to be 0.75, and the t-value is 3.00 which is greater than the critical t-value of 2.365. Therefore, the null hypothesis is rejected, indicating there is a significant relationship between weight and chest size of infants at birth.

Pearson-Product-Moment Correlation

The Following data were obtained in a study of the relationship between the weight and chest
size of infants at birth. Determine the degree of relationship between the weight and chest size
infants at birth. Is there a significant relationship between the weight and chest size of infants
at birth? Use of 0.05 level of significance.

Solutions:
Step 1: Construct the Null and Alternative Hypothesis.
Ho: 𝑟 = 0 (There is no correlation between the weight and chest size of infants at birth.)
Ha: 𝑟 ≠ 0 (There is a correlation between the weight and chest size of infants at birth.)

Step 2: State the level of Significance

Level of Significance = 0.05

Step 3: Calculate the degrees of freedom (𝒅𝒇 = 𝑵 − 𝟐) and determine the critical value of t or
𝒕𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍.
𝑑𝑓 = 9 − 2 𝑡𝑐𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 = 2.365
𝑑𝑓 = 7

Step 4: Compute for the value of Spearman rho or 𝒓𝒔

WEIGHT (lbs) X CHEST SIZE (cm) Y 2 2 XY
5.64 29.5 31.8096 870.25 166.38
4.41 26.3 19.4481 691.69 115.983
9 32.2 81 1036.84 289.8
11.32 36.5 128.1424 1332.25 413.18
7.08 27.7 50.1264 767.29 196.116
8.86 27.2 78.4996 739.84 240.992
4.74 28.3 22.4676 800.89 134.142
8.82 30.3 77.7924 918.09 267.246
7.61 28.7 57.9121 823.69 218.407
67.48 266.7 547.1982 7980.83 2042.246

𝑁Ʃ𝑋𝑌−(Ʃ𝑋)(Ʃ𝑌) 9(2042.246)−(67.48)(266.7)
𝑟= 𝑟𝑠 =
√[𝑁(Ʃ𝑋 2 )−(Ʃ𝑋)2 ][𝑁(Ʃ𝑌 2 )−(Ʃ𝑌)2 ] √[9(547.1982)−(67.48)2 ][9(7980.83)−(266.7)2 ]

𝑟 = 0.75

Step 5: Calculate the 𝒕𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒆 then determine the decision.

𝑟𝑠 √𝑁−2 0.75√9−2
𝑡= 2
𝑡𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 = 𝑡𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 = 3.00
√1−𝑟𝑠 √1−(0.75)2
How to determine the decision?
If… Then the decision is…
𝑡𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 < 𝑡𝑐𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 Do not reject the Ho (Null
Hypothesis)
𝑡𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 ≥ 𝑡𝑐𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 Reject the Ho (Null Hypothesis)

𝑡𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 𝑡𝑐𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙
3.00 ≥ 2.365

Reject the Ho (Null Hypothesis)

Step 6: State the Conclusion

Answer the following questions:
1. Is there a relationship between the two variables being tested?
2. What degree is their relationship or correlation?

Answer:
1. There is a significant relationship between the weight and chest size of infants at birth.
2. The correlation/relationship is high correlation, marked relationship.

Interpretation
-High Relationship

Computed t-value
-3.00

Decision:
-Greater than

Therefore
-Reject Null Hypothesis

Remarks
-Significant
