In our class, I understood the aspects of different

projects and chose the second topic,

eminent author Mr.Kunja Bihari Parhi a writer from

an eminent personality can give a glimpse of

of the character.

1.5 LIMITATIONS

the writing.

effective though individual imagination is also
necessary.

Introduction Of
the Author
6
Kunja Bihari Parhi was born in Mayurbhanj district in
the state of Odisha on 22nd August 1946 at village
Jamubani. His father late Dibakar Parhi was a farmer
and mother Smt. Subasini Parhi was a humble
homemaker. Kunja Bihari started his education from
the village Lower Primary School situated at Jamubani.
Thereafter he studied in Jalda UP School.
After that he proceeded to village Rajaloka where he
completed his M.E (class 6th and 7th). His childhood
struggle had taught him many lessons. His father was a
man of principle.
Kunja Bihari continued his studies in M.K.C High School,
Baripada and after that he stepped into M.P.C College
in the same town where he did his graduation with
Political Science (Hons). During his college career, he
got opportunities to attend various camps organized by
NCC. Apart from attending a few camps within the
state of Odisha, he was fortunate enough to attend
the All India Summer Training Camp held at Bhowali,
Nainital (Uttarakhand) and All India Advance

7
Leadership Camp held at Barapani (Shillong) in the
state of Assam.
He had the zeal to learn many more new things. Due to
his passion for higher studies, he worked very hard and
completed his post-graduation (Political Science) in the
year 1970 from Utkal University Vani Vihar,
Bhubaneswar.
Thereafter he joined State Bank of India and served
for a long period of 36 years successfully. He retired
from bank service as Chief Manager on 31st December
2006.
Although his day-to-day life was much busy with
routine banking work, he had a strong fascination to
serve the rural common people by providing
personalized service to the underprivileged people in
the society to fulfill their banking needs.
During this period, whenever he used to get little time
he was either writing a small story or was engaged in
composing a poem.
Due to time constraints, he was not able to follow his
dreams. Soon after his retirement, he got ample time
to fulfill his passion.

8
He devoted his maximum time towards writing books.
His work includes Short Stories, Novels, Poetry,
Articles, Travelog etc.

Being a religious minded person he dedicates all his

work to Maa Saraswati and Lord Jagannath. He
completely believes that it is because of the blessings
of Almighty, he is able to write many new things.
The content of his writing is mainly based on his
personal experiences and also the things that he sees
in and around him. (Anubhav and Anubhuti) as rightly
opined by one of the eminent writers Satkodi Hota.
This approach of writing had given him a place in the
History of Odia Literature as a modern writer.
In the year 2018, he was felicitated by Odisha Sahitya
Academy (Saraswata Samana) Award. He got
recognition by the Government of Odisha, Cultural
Department for his immense dedication and
contribution towards Odia literature.
The quest for literature is making him continue with his
work. His wife Subhra Parhi and two daughters
Chandrabati and Chitralekha inspire him to continue

9
with his good work and become immortal through his
writings.
Till date, Sri Parhi has written over twenty two books
in his regional language.
His Publisher who is an eminent poet in Odia literature
Shri Bhikari Dhala has always extended required
cooperation for which all his books could be published
in time.

He received a lot of blessings, appreciation, and

constructive remarks from the readers of his books
which encouraged him to write more and more.
Some of his achievements over the years has been shown below:

INTERVIEW WITH MR. KUNJA BIHARI PARHI

This is an interview with MR. KUNJA BIHARI PARHI

Interviewer : How are you sir? It is an honor to interact

with you today.

Kunja Bihari Parhi: Thank you Aditya. What about you ?

11
I : Well. Nice to meet you sir.

Kunja Bihari Parhi: same here .

I : What is the first thing you ever got published?

Kunja Bihari Parhi: I was 61 when my first story

started soon after I retired from my job . It was a
short story. ( Amari Ga Katha ebebhi mane pade )

I: You have been a prolific writer. Have you ever

experienced the dreaded Writer’s Block?

Kunja Bihari Parhi : Yes I have occasionally abandoned a

manuscript. I write a story in my head. I see the story
like a movie. So writing that out is relatively simple.
When I write I just keep a waste paper basket handy
in case I am experiencing a block. I mostly write short
stories. They are best written in a continuous creative
process. You have a feel of immediacy. When you write
a novel you have to live with the characters for a long
time. So I even prefer writing Novels as I have
experienced that my writings are very descriptive.

I : Where do you find triggers for your stories?

Kunja Bihari Parhi : They could be about people or

incidents that have happened with me or to others. A

12
lot of my stories are portraits of people and also from
my real life experiences.

I : Is nostalgia a better trigger for you than the

reality of today?

Kunja Bihari Parhi: I was nostalgic even as a young man.

Preferred listening to old hindi and odia songs . I read
many well known Odia novels also, Charles Dickens,
Joseph Conrad, Evelyn Waugh, Richard Jefferies and
Louise Imogen Guineyas a young man. I was in Odisha
with my mother and father along with my nine brothers
and sisters was a big family but somehow went through
it

I : Do you feel unhappy when you see your stories on

celluloid?

Kunja Bihari Parhi : Film is a different medium. So you

have to change settings, characters etc to suit the
medium. Sometimes the ending may have to be
different. Some stories were very close to what I had
in mind.

I: Do introverts make better writers than extroverts?

Kunja Bihari Parhi : There are two kinds of authors,

subjective and objective. Introverts are more inward

13
looking. Emily Bronte, Virginia Woolf etc wrote from
within themselves. Poets like Keats or Shelley were
introverts. On the other hand John Grisham would be
my example of an objective writer. Frederick Forsyth
is an example of an objective storyteller. They are
extroverts.

I : How would you describe yourself?

Kunja Bihari Parhi: I am a storyteller from a personal

viewpoint. When I run out of people I invent ghosts.
(chuckles) I do believe in ghosts. Never saw one but
probably experienced it faintly and included it in my
latest novel.

I : How has the Indian literary scene changed over the

last few years?

Kunja Bihari Parhi: There were no lit fests and launches

in India till the eighties when we had the first World
Book Fair. In the ’50s and ’60s newspapers also
published fiction, especially short stories. So I wrote
short stories. We did not have many publishers. But
many writers have been forgotten like Kamala
Markandeya, Mulgaonkar or Mulk Raj Anand.

14
I : Should a writer experiment with different genres
of writing?

Kunja Bihari Parhi: Readers want more of the same

from you. So stick to one genre. Chetan Bhagat has got
five novels of a similar nature. I have already written
nine novels out of my twenty two books which even
includes travelog short stories and poetry.

I : Advice for aspiring writers…?

Kunja Bihari Parhi : The more you write, the better you
will write! So keep writing everyday and must follow a
disciplined life.

I : Ok! Thank you very much for sparing your invaluable

time. I am deeply inspired and am going to carry all
your thought process and advice to my class and share
it with my friends. I am sure many will equally get
inspired and start penning down their thoughts as well.

Kunja Bihari Parhi : Welcome my son!
