Practice Problems
Practice Problems:
1. An 8-pole DC shunt generator with 778 wave-connected armature conductors and running at 500 rpm
supplies a load of 12.5 ohms resistance at terminal voltage of 50V. The armature resistance is 0.24 ohms and
the field resistance is 250 ohms. Find the armature current, the induced emf and the flux per pole.
2. A 4-pole lap-connected armature of a DC shunt generator is required to supply the loads connected in
parallel: (1) 5kW Geyser at 250V and (2) 2.5kW Lighting load also at 250V. The generator has an armature
resistance of 0.2 ohm and a field resistance of 250ohms. The armature has 120 conductors in the slots and
runs at 1000rpm. Allowing 1V per brush for contact drops and neglecting friction, find. (a) flux per pole; (b)
Armature-current per parallel path.
3. A shunt generator delivers 195A at terminal p.d. of 250V. the armature resistance and shunt field resistance
are 0.02 and 50 ohms respectively. The iron and friction losses equal 950 W. Find:
a. Emf generated,
b. Copper losses;
c. Output of the prime motor;
d. Commercial, mechanical and electrical efficiencies.
4. A long shunt compound generator delivers a load current of 50A at 500 V and has armature, series field
and shunt field resistances of 0.05 ohm, 0.03 ohm and 250 ohms respectively. What is the generated voltage
allowing 1 V per brush for contact drop?

Practice Problems:
5. A shunt generator has a full-load current of 196 A at 220 V. the stray losses are 720 watts and the shunt field
coil resistance is 55 ohms. Is it has a full-load efficiency of 88%, find the armature resistance. Also, find the
load current corresponding to maximum efficiency.
6. A 4-pole DC shunt generator with a shunt field resistance of 100 ohms and an armature resistance of 1 ohm
has 378 wave-connected conductors in its armature. The flux per pole is 0.02 Wb. If a load resistance of 10
ohms is connected across the armature terminals and the generator is driven at 1000rpm, calculate the power
absorbed by the load.
7. A four pole Dc generator has an armature winding containing a total of 648 conductors connected in two
parallel paths. If the flux per pole is 0.321 x 106 maxwells and the speed of rotation of the armature is 1,800
rpm. Calculate the ampacity required in each armature conductor if the power developed by the armature is
5kW.
8. The field current of a 180kW, 250V DC shunt generator is 6A when running full load at rated terminal voltage. If
the combined armature and brush resistance is 0.02 ohm, solve for the electrical efficiency of the generator.
