Assignment 3
Instructions: Answer the following problems. Write your answers in a long-sized newsprint.
Write all your solutions at the front page of the paper only. Submit your solutions on or
before 5 pm, December 1, 2023 at the EE Department office.
1. Find the equations of the tangent and normal to the curve 𝑦 = 𝑥√𝑥 − 1 @ (5, 10).
2. Find the point on the curve 𝑦 = 3𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 − 4 at which the tangent is perpendicular to the line 𝑥 +
10 𝑦 − 7 = 0 .
Find the maximum and minimum point of the following curves and also its point/s of inflection. Solve
the problem analytically and show the graph of the curve given.
4𝑥
3. 𝑦=
𝑥 2 +4
4. 3𝑦 = 𝑥 + 3𝑥 2 − 9𝑥 + 3

Optimization Problems
5. A man in a boat 6 km from the nearest point P on a straight shore wishes to reach a point Q
down the straight shoreline 12 km from P. On water, he can travel 4 km/hr and on land 5 km/hr.
How far from P should he land in order to minimize his total time of travel?
6. The upper and lower vertices of a rectangle lie on the curves 𝑥 2 = 5 − 𝑦 and 𝑥 2 = 4𝑦 respectively.
The sides of the rectangle are parallel to the coordinate axes. Find the maximum area of the
triangle.
7. Water is poured into an inverted conical cistern of altitude 12 ft and radius of base 5 ft. If the
water level rises at 36 ft/min, find the rate at which the dry surface of the inside of the cone is
decreasing when the water is 4 ft deep?
8. A spherical iron ball 8 cm in diameter is coated with a layer of ice of uniform thickness. If the ice
melts at a uniform rate of 10 𝑐𝑚3 /𝑚𝑖𝑛., how fast is the thickness decreasing at the instant when it
is 2 cm thick?
