Welcome to the Science – Grade 2 SSES Alternative Delivery
Mode (ADM) module on Earth as a Source of Life.
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and
reviewed by educators both from public and private institutions to
assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners meet
the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming
their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into
guided and independent learning activities at their own pace
and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners acquire the
needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.

1 Earth as a Source of Life

Earth is the only planet in the solar system that has


living organisms. It gives everything we need, air that we
breathe, water that we drink and food that we eat.
In this module, you will also understand the
importance of the resources of the Earth in supporting the
life of living organisms.

What is It

Earth is the planet where we live.


It is rich in resources that support
different forms of life.
It is where we can find living
organisms, interacting with each other
and their non-living environment such
as land, water, and air.
Land as a source of life
The solid part of the earth is land. It is the ground
that we step on.
It covers about 30% of the Earth’s surface. It is
made up of soil, rocks, and other minerals.
Land is important because people live here.

Also, land is a habitat for many living things. This is
where plants grow and land animals live.

People use land for farming to produce food that we


eat.

People get food from plants and animals.

Water as a source of life
According to the Environmental Health Practitioner
Manual (2012), living organisms need water to survive.
Water is one of the most important substances on Earth.
People, plants, and animals must have water to survive. If
there is no water there will be no life on Earth.
It covers about 70% of the Earth’s surface. Bodies of
water such as oceans, seas, rivers, and lakes are home
to some plants and animals.
Water has many uses. What uses of water do you see
in the pictures?

Also, marine and aquatic animals need water as their habitat.

Air as a source of life
We all need air to survive. Air contains oxygen and
carbon dioxide useful to plants and animals.

Carbon dioxide exhaled by humans and animals into


the atmosphere are used by plants to make their own
food through the process of photosynthesis.
All green plants during the process of photosynthesis,
release oxygen back into the atmosphere to be used by
people and animals for breathing.
